to think that Sarah Millican should never be given air time again?

Tonight, she referred to a woman's body being found in 'suspicious circumstances but that the motivation had not been sexual.' She then made her joke which was: how awful it would be to be a murder victim but to not be considered attractive enough for anyone to think that the motivation might have been sexual. She ended by suggesting that the victim could have trimmed their pubic hair.

I found this beyond the pale but made evn worse by the fact that channel 4 chose to broadcast this on the day that a young woman has been found murdered.

any nation which celebrates the likes of Jimmy Carr, sarah Millican, Ricky gervais etc as comedians is going to the dogs.

blimey who thought she would be so controversial. And I just thought she was funny. Not seen the news today either partly on purpose because I am bored of the glumness

Of course I know that it was pre-written and pre-recorded - it was not a live show. It is a very sad co-incidence that a young girl was found murdered today. The fact remains that this "joke" was not remotely funny, it was not black humour, or ironic, just shockingly awful.

But the day it's broadcast is the same as each week it's on. They can't check the news throughout the day and switch it to a different episode because there could be something said by her that someone might think is related to a news headline.

I think if comedians didn't tell any joke that carried a risk of offending someone, somewhere, we wouldn't have any comedians.

I haven't seen it but I know the sort of jokes she does and I dont see it as about the victim.

People either find her funny or they don't. Each to their own.

Or maybe Oxford feels there are bigger things in this world to be stomping your feet about.

Karlos Granted, Micheal Macyntre, Sarah Millican and the like are diabolically poor but this country makes some great comedy. E.g Dylan Moran, Peter serafinowicz, any Armando Innuchi thing, The Thick of It, etc etc

It was part of a self-deprecatory riff about how she feels about the way she looks. I enjoy her humour - bar the fart jokes.

I think you're being over-sensitive, OP. Never occurred to me to make any connection with today's news.

Karlos Larry David's writing is not typical of American style sitcom writing Seinfeld (best sitcom ever) was abut laughing at what makes you uncomfortable have you not seen Bubble Boy or The Jimmy. Curb Your Enthusiasm is even more shocking and cringe worth at times

I do not find Sarah Millican that funny but it does sound like she was being ironic and it would not be connected to the awful news of today

Yes but who is celebrated and popular and getting prime time shows? the quality you mention is niche. It'll be a cold day in hell before we produce a mainstream comedy of the quality of Seinfeld or Frasier.

The Office, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, The Royle Family, Peep Show... there are loads of UK comedies on par or better than Seinfeld or Frasier.

Whatever anyone thinks of Sarah Millican, I'm astounded that anyone can hold up Frasier as an example of the pinnacle of comedy genius. Frasier is funny enough, makes me laugh a bit, but it's all fairly predictable safe American sit-com material. Pretty bland really. I would like to think we can aspire to far greater things than that.

Because Seinfeld and Frasier are so modern. It's true that current British comedies are far behind current American ones though. I can't think of a British equivalent to Community or Arrested Development.

I agree Frasier is amusing Cheers is much better

fast show and league of gentlemen were fantastic weren't they. now comedians seem to be stuck on panel shows being 'witty' it's dull

I can never actually hear what Sarah millican is saying because her voice is so goddamn littlegirly awful I'm either scrabbling for the remote or sticking my fingers in my ears to stop me wanting to stab her the second she starts talking.

If you want intelligent and actually funny from your comedians, may I recommend Dylan Moran?

I quite like bits of Frasier, but I do find its gender politics dubious to say the least.

I find Millican very tiresome and for that reason didn't watch tonight.
