to not expect or want to find "v is for vampire" in a child's ABC book?

a is for apple, c is for cat, k is for kangaroo and then when we got to v - v is for vampire.

I didn't like it, don't want to explain the concept of vampire to my toddler and will probably be hiding the book once she's gone to bed.

It really surprised me, am I being too precious?

Yes, but only if M is for monster would also be a step too far for you. Smile

HTH

CSIJanner · 31/05/2013 16:08

MothershipG · 31/05/2013 16:09

I'll expect your appearance on an anti-apple bobbling Hallowe'en thread in about 4 months Grin

Tee2072 · 31/05/2013 16:11

You'd be most upset, then, that my son's social story book's main character is a, gasp, monster!!!

Fakebook · 31/05/2013 16:11

What's wrong with vampire? Sesame Street used to have the count who used to teach numbers. No biggie.

balia · 31/05/2013 16:11

Would you like to have mine? V is for vagina...

Yawner247 · 31/05/2013 16:11

Oh dear how traumatic for you!!!!

OnFoot · 31/05/2013 16:12

Interesting, M is for Monster wouldn't have bothered me at all.

Is Count Duckula still on kids' tv?

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 31/05/2013 16:12

Yes you are being quite precious.

How do you cope with halloween?

50shadesofvomit · 31/05/2013 16:14

V is for...
Vulva?
Van?
Vacuum cleaner?

50shadesofvomit · 31/05/2013 16:16

You are being precious btw. F is for famine, G is for genocide would be OTT but at Halloween your toddler may see people dressed as zombies, witches, werewolves?

PoppyWearer · 31/05/2013 16:16

You'd probably best avoid sending your child to school. They get "educated" about all kinds of things by their classmates. Grin

AChickenCalledKorma · 31/05/2013 16:17

Sympathies - I would have absolutely hated to find that in a picture book when mine were really little. I have always had a phobia about vampire stories Blush.

However ........ DD2 got really into Vampires when she was in Reception (thanks little friends!) and I had to get over it. And you know what? It's just another monster and kids like monsters in a funny sort of way.

You don't have to tell them the whole story of Dracula.

IneedAyoniNickname · 31/05/2013 16:18

Ds2s favourite thing to draw as a toddler was vampires, although as he was convinced they were called Bampires an ABC book with them on would have been fab!

Val007 · 31/05/2013 16:20

YANBU - I agree with you!

Sparklypinknails · 31/05/2013 16:21

V is for very likely you are overreacting.

OnFoot · 31/05/2013 16:23

Halloween barely features on my radar to be honest, I haven't seen it celebrated much round here. It doesn't bother me either way. Bonfire Night is normally more fun!

I suppose I largely expect ABC books to show things a 2-3 year old is familiar with and mine certainly wouldn't recognise vampire at that age whereas monster they would. My 5 year old who watches mainly CBeebies didn't know it from the picture either.

I vaguely remember Count Duckula but have never watched Sesame Street.

The rhyme has "cupful of blood" which I still think is a bit much for the ABC age but I accept I'm clearly in the minority. Thank you.

At nursery when dd was 3 years old, they made a vampire mask for Halloween! She still has it and sometimes wears it around the house pretending to be a vampire and sucking my blood. She also watches mona the vampire on DVD.

OnFoot · 31/05/2013 16:25

Poppy - I'm fully aware of what they learn at school! Older DC are at school. No problem with that!

V is for vulture? A bird which scavenges corpses. Hmmm. Far more appropriate Wink
