a is for apple, c is for cat, k is for kangaroo and then when we got to v - v is for vampire.

I didn't like it, don't want to explain the concept of vampire to my toddler and will probably be hiding the book once she's gone to bed.

It really surprised me, am I being too precious?

Last year, DS received The Gashlycrumb Tinies for his 1.5 year birthday (celebrated because of his Christmas Day birth).

I can quote the whole thing as it is well loved in our house, but will offer just a taster here

A is for Amy, who fell down the stairs;
B is for Boris, assaulted by bears;
C is for Clara, who wasted away;
D is for Desmond, thrown out of a sleigh...

It is fully illustrated with pictures ranging from innocuous (Prue is merely reaching for the door handle to the pub in which she is trampled flat in a brawl, for example) to mildly threatening (the thug whom Hector was done in by is lurking menacingly) and explicit (Susan is pictured in the act of being consumed by a fire). The writer/ illustrator is Edward Gorey (that's what he calls himself in this case) and is well worth a googly half-hour if not full integration into your child's education.

We were slightly twittery/ nervous accepting this for DS (from his wonderful cousin) and had planned to store it, but we were a bit slack as usual and it's stuck...

Sparkly that's the one we have. Ours love it! And recite it to old ladies on buses.....!

I never get these parents who feel obliged to explain everything just because they have been called on to explain "something^. What's wrong with "a vampire is a kind of monster" rather than going into full details of the undead and stakes through the heart?

Do you find that you can't explain the witch in Meg and Mog either without recitals from the Malleus maleficarum?

YANBU!

I don't think you are being unreasonable. What's wrong with Violet or Violin? Whatever your opinions on the scariness & suitability for children regarding vampires, most people think they are not real. I'd be irritated by F for Fairy & S for Santa as well.

V is for Valium in my house!

Cory - I turned my Dh into a frog to explain 'witch' to DS. Was that going too far?

mrsjay · 02/06/2013 16:47

have you never seen seasame street then they cave the count well counting Grin

cory · 02/06/2013 17:53

OxfordBags, that sounds entirely reasonable, assuming that your ds is one of those visual learners who can only learn by visual illustrations.

(are you planning on turning him back?)

OP

You appear to be acutely short of a 'grip'.

Can I politely suggest you get one.

;)
