to not expect or want to find "v is for vampire" in a child's ABC book?

OnFoot · 31/05/2013 16:07

a is for apple, c is for cat, k is for kangaroo and then when we got to v - v is for vampire.

I didn't like it, don't want to explain the concept of vampire to my toddler and will probably be hiding the book once she's gone to bed.

It really surprised me, am I being too precious?

G is for Get Over Yourself.

Flobbadobs · 31/05/2013 16:34

Come on who would genuinely expect to see V is for Vampire in a small childs ABC book? Usually it's Violin! (Although on my Pagan ABC V isfor Vervain for protection and rest Grin)
OP YANBU to expect it, I wouldn't either however it wouldn't be a big deal for me personally.

Flobbadobs · 31/05/2013 16:35

Ahem, YANBU to NOT expect it... Blush

TheCraicDealer · 31/05/2013 16:37

OP will pee her pants in horror at this.

OnFoot · 31/05/2013 16:47

Craic, yep , I won;t be buying that! :)

BTW,for those who've assumed I have some phobia, I don't. (vampire books and films bore me though) I just don't want to try to explain bloodsucking to a 2.5 year old, hence will probably bury the book in our overstuffed bookcase til she's older. But when she's older she won't want an ABC book so might as well give it away now really! My 4 yr old wouldn't be seen dead with an ABC book. Ah well, was due a drop-off at the charity shop anyway.

I still find it odd - I'd also find W for Werewolf odd, whereas W for Witch or Wizard wouldn't surprise me. But evidently that's just me. :)

Precious and ridiculous. Get over yourself.

Or perhaps speak to a psychologist about your deep seated issues with vampires.

LiegeAndLief · 31/05/2013 19:53

Are you reading K is for kissing a cool kangaroo?

Whatalotofpiffle · 31/05/2013 20:15

I wouldn't expect it but would explain it as another pretend creature - unicorn, vampire, monster, genie - without the detail.

I watched a children's animal compilation today on youtube with dd and was shocked that there was a monkey peeing in his own mouth... Bit harder to explain, would have loved a vampire instead!

I really don't like the cup of blood thing... Doesn't sit right with me.

I do think a lot of adults and children are de sensitised to things, but that doesn't mean you are being precious.

I am struggling with Peter Rabbit!

ScarletLady02 · 31/05/2013 20:18

On DD's Leaptop thingy it says "X is for Ox"

Well we changed it to Xenomorph as we couldn't have that could we?!?

(A Xenomorph is the creature from the Alien films, hearing a 2 year old say it is beyond awesome).

rainbowslollipops · 31/05/2013 20:49

V is for vagina would you rather it said that?

LittleMissLucy · 31/05/2013 20:52

I have that series of books with V is for Vampire - but its only one of several V options (no Vulvas or Vaginas however, thankfully).

My kids both asked me to hide the book as they were afraid of the idea of Vampires. So the V book is hidden.

I assumed its because we live in the USA and Halloween is a HUGE deal.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 31/05/2013 20:52

YANBU. It is unnecessary.

And SOO predictable that other posters would go the vagina route! So to speak, of course (being Friday night, it would no doubt be a case of A is for Anal... Grin)

Dawndonna · 31/05/2013 20:53

Is 'O' for Onanist?

Nerfmother · 31/05/2013 21:04

Brilliant idea. The alternative abc.
A is for Armageddon
B is for ?
C is for crisis
D is for doom
E is for ?
Etc

rainbowslollipops · 31/05/2013 21:17

L is for leave
T is for the
B is for bastard.

rainbowslollipops · 31/05/2013 21:18

D is for dickhead
R is for rimming

haha this has set me off now

plainjaney · 31/05/2013 21:21

TheCraicDealer I am now wondering where I can obtain a small child as an excuse to buy that book!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 31/05/2013 21:22

My friend and I do "Inappropriate ABC" all the time! We sing " E E E is for existentialism and FFF is for Failure!" and our DC sing along!

congresstart · 31/05/2013 21:22

Thanks for the little stoker link...I'm off to order one for DD on amazon uk! how cute is that book.

fuzzpig · 31/05/2013 21:32

That little stoker book is gorgeous! Shame my 2 are too old for board/counting books now :(

PeazlyPops · 31/05/2013 21:36

YANBU, it's not appropriate.

WafflyVersatile · 31/05/2013 21:39

''What's a vampire, mummy?''

''It's a type of monster who sucks blood from your neck, mwah ha ha'' [nibbles toddler's neck]

Why would you have to explain it more than another monster?

Have you read any old school fairy stories. orphaned kids, trolls eating children, witches fattening them up for the pot.

It doesn't have to be some Twilight version, which I've heard glorifies abusive relationships.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 21:43

Y is for You are being unreasonable.

FredFredGeorge · 31/05/2013 22:00

Surely the entire last few generations of North Americans learnt to count with help from a vampire? Which would suggest most toddlers are completely aware what one is?

TheCraicDealer · 31/05/2013 22:03

Haha! The author also does little Pride & Prejudice, Jayne Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Romeo & Juliet.... My favourite is Sense & Sensibility which is a book about opposites. I agree I also need to steal a small child to read them to!
