aibu to take shoes back to m and s?

dh always has the same work shoes from m and s. £49 a pair, last a year. buys another pair.

this pair have lasted exactly 3 months and have cracked right across both soles on the outside. the uppers are perfect, plenty of tread, but cracked and unwearable.

i paid cash and no longer have the receipt. they still sell the same shoe. would they give me a credit note or tell me to sling my hook?

Well there's no harm in asking but without a receipt you can't prove how long he's had them. I doubt they'd do anything tbh.

I expect they would replace them. If there is a lot of wear left on the tread it should be obvious that they are relatively new.

I would make a big deal of how you are really surprised and disappointed as this has never happened before and you "buy a lot in m&s and this doesn't usually happen". You can try. I certainly would!

I took a pair of shoes back to them with an insole come away and they replaced them no problem.

Technically if you don't have proof of purchase then they don't have to do anything, but I would certainly give it a go - for £49 I'd expect more than 3 months wear!

They may be able to look up the transaction if you can tell them when and where you bought them? Or can you show them your statement, if bought on card?

My mum bought some summer sandals at M&S for my DD, she only wore them once but they rubbed where the strap did up. I actually thought the design was bad as the strap did up too high.
On that basis, that they were'nt actually suitable for purpose I took them back on the off chance they'd take them back. Didn't have a receipt. I didn't really expect much but they were great. Gave me a credit note no problem.
If they only lasted 3 months they're not really up to the job, I'd take them back.

The same happened to a pair of my sons shoes and they changed them with no problem but they did look barely worn ,I think if they look well used you may have more of a problem .

I would buy an identical pair, keep the receipt - and take the old pair back within 28 days .

But, Holly, then she'd be saying the shoes had worn out after one month instead of the three they'd actually been worn.

I think they'd be very suspicious and it's people trying that sort of trick that makes it more difficult for honest customers to get a fair hearing.

I have just looked up reviews of the shoes on their website and 2 reviews out of 8 say theirs cracked across the sole in the same place! I think ill print that off and tell them (truthfully) that I never keep receipts for clothes and shoes from marks once they've been used cos I've never had a problem. Ill update

Unless going to M & S involves some kind of major planning or special arrangements I can't understand why you wouldn't just pop them in your bag and go to customer services and ask for a replacement they next time you're passing.

I don't know why there's often a reluctance to take stuff back, I don't think I can remember an occasion I returned something and didn't get a refund or replacement. Unless you're obviously taking the piss why would you even think twice about it. I realise I come from a family of serial returners but ime customer services in the major retailers s pretty good.

Normally quite happy to argue the toss over electrical items but not having a receipt and taking back something worn is unfamiliar territory. If everyone had posted saying they defo wouldn't refund without a receipt I wouldn't bother and save myself a lot of hassle!

I was about to say the same as Team Edward. It doesn't have to be a receipt.

M&S are normally very obliging about refunds. They have a good "customer is always right" policy. This is where the Sale of Goods Act applies - goods must be fit for purpose.

I took 3 of their v-necked cashmillion jumpers back after 3 months because they had totally lost their shape. No receipt. I told them I'd bought them 3 months ago and wasn't very happy with how they were looking, and asked if they could do anything for me. No quibbling - gave me a credit note and apologised for being unable to refund as I didn't have a receipt. Give it a try! :-)
