To ask if any of you cyclists can recommend a rucksack to extend my son's life

20 year old cyclist son uses his bike (bicycle, not motorbike) to get to work. Takes his lunch and clothes etc in a rucksack on his back.

His current one is falling to bits so I'm thinking I'll buy him another one with fairy lights on to keep him safe. He's fine with me buying it, but is insisting on it being black, rather than the fluorescent green or orange I'd choose for him. I appreciate they're not cool, but I like him and want him to stay alive Smile

Even the black rucksacks meant for cylists don't have much in the way of luminous stuff on. AIBU to think there must be a black (or similar coloured) cyclists rucksack that will show up in the dark?

Have you had a look on wiggle.com ? Pricey, but massive range and good quality.

Eg www.wiggle.com/deuter-compact-exp-12-rucksack/ has reflectors, and a light...

You can get covers for rucksacks.... so could he use one of these to be seen but have his black bag to go into work ?

Second the idea of a cover, DH has one, there is an added benefit that they keep the bag dry and clean if it's raining.

MrsLyman · 29/05/2013 15:44

This is the one he has

DH and I have covers. Dayglo orange and yellow with masses of reflective tape. Once removed, my black racktop bag looks relatively normal. DH's rucksack is orange anyway, but not reflective.

I'd recommend looking at the Deuter bags mentioned above, and also Osprey - Wiggle have the Axis, Quasar and Momentum from their commuter aimed range. You can get cheaper bags, but I think both those brands offer good quality and functionality for the money (from using them myself, and selling them at work).

DH has a cover called a HUMP. Very reflective and covers his blue rucsac in a waterproofing and very visible way. And folds down to nothing when not on the bike.

HUMP

I feel your pain. DS1 would not put a cover on a rucksack, nor would he use a coloured one, nor would he use reflective strips on his coat, even tho he has now passed his driving test and can see how difficult cyclists are to see. I dint know what the answer is and will be following this thread with interest.

Rapha - the coolest cycling brand. If he is brand-conscious
