To not enjoy being called sweetheart

Babes or angel by anyone, especially women. Makes my teeth itch.

OP posts:
TWinklyLittleStar · 27/05/2013 13:16

Maybe it's a bit too familiar but it beats fuckface or cunt. Not something I could get myself riled over, unless I already dislike the person saying it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2013 13:18

I agree, OP. Don't much like being called these things by people who don't know me but it really is more teeth-itchy somehow from a woman. Confused

DryCounty79 · 27/05/2013 13:24

Don't like being called babes, but don't mind babe, sweetheart or angel. Which is lucky, as my other half calls me all three! Also don't mind love, hun or sweetie.

Although, thinking about it, I wouldn't like a woman to call me babe, sweetheart or angel. Just feels odd. Mind you, as a pp said, much better than some other names people could call me!

Good question babes Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/05/2013 13:25

Oh no. I call people sweetheart. I will try and stop.

Birdsgottafly · 27/05/2013 13:40

I feel a bit uncomfortable when it is someone a lot younger.

I have had to tell my DD (27) to be aware of what she puts on the end, she does "hun" a lot.

I like these types of endings being used, when out and about, never in work, though.

ShabbyButNotChic · 27/05/2013 13:54

Hmm, i live in yorkshire so tend to get called love/sweetheart/flower by pretty much everyone i meet! Whether that be shop staff, people at work, or the elderly man i met walking the dog this morning! I like it as it is friendly and mostly because they dont know your name. But i wouldnt like to be called babe by anyone! So yanbu and yabu..,on the fence.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2013 13:56

I do like being called 'Duck' though... I'm not sure where up North it is common, but I really like it... Blush

VenusUprising · 27/05/2013 13:57

Oh Hun, I know, it's so irritating! Flowers

Dare I say, it actually jars when I read it on here.......

squeakytoy · 27/05/2013 13:58

preferable to being called twat, bitch, or similar.. cant say an inoffensive term of endearment would bother me at all. unless it was said in a patronising way.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2013 13:59

Oh I HATE Hun. It never sounds nice to my ears... Shock

I actually think I'd rather be called an expletive...

Callycat · 27/05/2013 14:01

I kinda like it Blush

My male friend - six foot and well built - gets called "flower" by the tea lady at work. it makes him all giggly.

Callycat · 27/05/2013 14:01

Giggly in a flattered way, I should add. Not in a mean way.

SoniaGluck · 27/05/2013 14:09

We get the usual "love" which everybody male and female uses around here in Yorkshire.

But older blokes (i.e. over 70 or so) tend to call you "lass".
As in: " How do, lass." I really like that.

AllYoursBabooshka · 27/05/2013 14:12

I like "Sweetheart", I find it's always said in a well meaning way.

"Sweetie" on the other hand...

OddSockMonster · 27/05/2013 14:13

I like being called 'duck' too. The lady in Spar does it, and the bus drivers, always cheers me up.

Angel would make me cross though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2013 14:16

Are you somewhere 'up North', OddSockMonster? I have a supplier in Derby who calls me 'Duck'. I'm wondering if I should relocate... Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/05/2013 14:18

My beloved Nan called everyone 'my duck'.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2013 14:19

Aww... mine too, even though she was from Kent, Sparklingbrook. :(

Hashtagwhatever · 27/05/2013 14:21

Babes is the worst esp by another female.

Sparklingbrook · 27/05/2013 14:21

Sad Lying. I wish she could come back and call me it again.

Maat · 27/05/2013 14:25

Sparkling Sad

I'm oop North and Love, Duck or Chuck are quite common - particularly amongst the older generation.

I don't like "babes", it always sounds false to me somehow.

OddSockMonster · 27/05/2013 14:25

I am Lying, in Sheffield but from down south. Not far north enough for lass though.

That's great zzzzz, would that count as a good enough criteria for where to go on our summer hols this year? I'd forgotten how much I love the West Country accent.

Thisvehicleisreversing · 27/05/2013 14:40

I love it when customers in my shop call me Sweetheart/babe/darling/love/duck etc it gives me a warm glow :)

What I don't like though is when men call me mate. It makes me feel blokey. I'm not a bloke. I'm a girl!
