Babes or angel by anyone, especially women. Makes my teeth itch.

the guy next door to me is mid 20s and he calls me pal, WHAT Confused

hugoagogo · 27/05/2013 19:55

I love 'hen' dh's granny says it all the time.

I miss 'my darling' or 'boy' from growing up in Norfolk.

Not keen on 'love', but you get used to it.

Maat · 27/05/2013 19:58

I quite like hen but then I only know a couple of people that use it and they are lovely so I think I associate it with them.

usualsuspect · 27/05/2013 20:03

Lol at pal.

One of my neighbours calls me 'my dear' makes me feel about 90 years old.

motherinferior · 27/05/2013 20:05

I call most people sweetheart.

crashdoll · 27/05/2013 20:14

YANBU. I especially hate it when it's said "sweedart"
Also, please don't ever call me love!

Maat · 27/05/2013 20:15

"Pal" is usually used with an aggressive tone around here. Mate & mucker are more friendly terms.

D0GWithAYoni · 27/05/2013 20:18

Cocker is common here. "Wasson cocker"

BOF · 27/05/2013 20:23

Sweetheart, darling and love are all words I use, more on here with strangers than I would in the real world (although I'll use them with family). I don't pepper every post with them or anything, but I think usual is right about it making people feel cared about on a thread if they are having a hard time. And it's got to be better than (((soft hugs))) Grin.

DollyClothespeg · 27/05/2013 20:25

Really? You really want to get annoyed at being called sweetheart, or love or whatever?! I can think of worse things to get wound up by, to be honest.
Being called terms of endearment doesn't rank up there.
You'd hate living round here, then. You could be 18 or 81, you'd still get called 'luv' 'darlin' or 'duck.'

chibi · 27/05/2013 20:27

my mil was glaswegian and called women hen and men cock

y'alright cock? yes hen.

i liked it. otherwise a pox on all terms of endearment from people i am not on significant personal terms with.

HollyBerryBush · 27/05/2013 20:32

I don't mind sweetheart, lovvie but the following piss me right off!

Hun - Im not german
Love - ok by market traders and the like, but not 20 summat blokes
Ducks - reminds me of an office bully when I first started work
Chick - oh that really winds me up)

Actually market traders can call me anything they want Grin but twatty 20-summats cannot.

wigglesrock · 27/05/2013 20:40

Springdiva bird is a very regional thing where I am. It's used by women to other women - a bit like using sparrow or lamb. It's not bird in the way a man would use bird to describe a female, which I always think is a very regional thing too.

MirandaGoshawk · 27/05/2013 20:43

complexnumber I'd never heard of cowson but Urban dictionary says it's the UK equivalent of son of a bitch.

apostropheuse · 27/05/2013 20:47

The only term of endearment I cannot abide is when a total strange calls me Dear. I have no idea why, but I just find it extremely patronising.

Normally around here people call you hen. I really don't mind that at all. In fact, I call my granddaughters "hen" and my grandsons "son", e.g. "Awwww come on over and sit on my knee son" said in a sing song granny voice. Grin
