To ask for help, dyed my hair and not it's falling out!

I've been dying my hair with different products since I was about 15, I usually let it grow for around 3 months or longer before redyeing it (I'm lazy). Never had an issue with it before.

Just used Garnier Olia to dye it, for the second time after having DD, followed all the instructions, went to wash it out and load of my hair is just falling out. I followed all the instructions, left it on for the recommended amount.

WTAF should I do, can I stop it?

I'm sorry, but it's probably snapping off at the base.

I think you are supposed to do a strand test before you do the lot, even if you have used that dye before.

I hope you are ok.

Ooh no great help but didn't want you to panic. Could it be post baby hair loss maybe? I always seem to loose lots of hair when I dye it , normally I notice it when I wash the dye out . Not a lot of help sorry just a thought is your scalp itchy or sore like an allergic reaction ?

I've never had this amount come out after dying it before it looks like it's snapping and not coming out at the root, definitely don't feel I'm having an allergic reaction.

DD had this, her fringe snapped off after dying it, although she's coloured her hair for ages and never had a problem. It also felt horrible, like Barbie hair after a few years.
She trimmed her hair and waited for it to grow again. Can't remember which dye she used, I'll see if I can get hold of her and check.

How does the hair look, otherwise? Is the colour and texture of the hair otherwise normal?

Very unusual with a box dye, they barely even use 10 volume peroxide. It wasn't a bleach or pre-lightener was it?

Also, are you absolutely sure its snapping and not shedding? Its quite normal to lose substantial amounts of hair after having a baby, usually several months after, and you say its the 2nd time since DD which makes the timing about right.

If it has snapped off elsewhere you should see sticky up spiky bits at the roots or crown, if you can't see anything its probably just shedding.

Try not to panic. It is highly unlikely for an over the counter box dye to do this unless it was bleach or you were previously heavily bleached, particularly if you followed the directions. What colour was it? What have you done previously? Have you always used box dye, because they are pretty much idiot proof so to speak. Apart from potential allergies they really are very safe for the general public to use, even every 3 weeks or so.

I have quite fine and soft hair, it feels pretty dry and frizzy which is definitely unusual.

It was 5.5 Mahogany brown, I usually use some sort of brown when I dye it. I always use box dye.

I do remember that DD's had no ammonia or peroxide in it either. She's at a convention with her phone switched off, so I can't raise her. Her hair is now soft and lovely and healthy and a beautiful shade of cyan at the moment.

All box dyes have peroxide in them, if they mix 2 bottles together. The peroxide is the developer, which allows the colour molecules to expand within the hair shaft, thus depositing the colour.

The only exceptions are the 1 step systems, which are 4-6 washes, Clairol have a small handful, plus the Wella toners, and the Daniel Sandler watercolours.

Box dyes that contain no ammonia (like Loreal Castings Crème Gloss) contain more peroxide to allow the amateur at home user to get an even result.

Garnier Olia absolutely does contain peroxide, and unfortunately does not get very good reviews on Makeupalley

OP, how long is it since your DD was born? It is normal to have a (massive) hair fall around 6-10 months after childbirth, and dying your hair may well accelerate the process.

Don't panic. Just be gentle to your hair, don't brush or wring it when wet, don't use heat on it and get some deep conditioning treatments for it.

Also, get one of those sink traps to but in your shower/bath drain to avoid plumbing nightmares...

Yeah, I've seen quite a few shit ones now, which probably explains why it's awful. Apparently I just chose a crap dye. Oh well, you live and learn.

Thanks Tatty, I've only ever used henna in the past, so I really don't know what I'm talking about. DD's colouring tends to change on a regular basis, and it was the first time she had experienced a disaster.

DD is 16 weeks today, I dyed my hair about a week after she was born and then today.

Despite that I don't think you will lose too much hair. I used to scalp bleach using Wella Coco, which is what they use to get afro and indian hair colours up to the lightest they can manage. It was white blonde. But I used to do it every 3 weeks or so and my hairdresser overlapped it. I started getting bleach breakage around the crown area and parting. But even then I didn't lose that much hair - just had a rather annoying tuft and some fluffy stuff, which meant I had to use vegie dye to get it down to a reasonable colour against my roots, wear it in a pony tail for about 3 months before it would sit flat.

I doubt a home box dye would do even that much. I suggest if you can get your hands on some Philip Kingsley Elasticiser Extreme and use it once or twice a week for the next few weeks things will improve and breakage will be a minimum. If you really can't stretch to that even some Aussie 3 minute miracle will help a lot, or any good conditioner with hydrolysed proteins in it, preferably hydrolysed keratin protein.

Hi,
How long did you loose hair for after the hair dye?
Did your hair grow back ok?
I'm interested to know about this since the same thing is now happening to me.
I know this is an old thread but i'm hoping you can give me some advice and information.

Hi. I am aware this is a very old post however I am needing help as my hair is falling out after using olia (I think was only once used it started to fall ) also had a baby 5 months ago. How do I stop ? Does it stop ? How did this end for you ?
