To feel very uneasy about news footage

Surrounding events in Woolwich? Does it have to be so graphic? I feel for the poor man and his family, it can't help them to show the perpetrators hands covered in blood or the moments moments immediately preceding the attack. It seems the news channels are all trying for shock factor.

I felt the same about some of the coverage of the April Jones case.

They didn't sensationalise it because it was a shocking attack.

The bloke being hacked to death had to go through the minutes and seconds of what happened to him, why dumb it down?

Nobody likes seeing stuff like that, but it shouldn't pass by without comment.

They haven't shown anything graphic in the coverage of the April Jones case have they HoHoHo?

Why start a new one?

I've had a conflicting opinions on this over the last couple of days to be honest, but I have now come to the conclusion that it has been the right thing to do.

Because it has been so graphic and "in your face", there is no hiding from it or putting your head in the sand. My hope is that because people have been so confronted with the full scale horror of it, it will serve to unite us (all faiths, colours etc) as one together, against those bigoted extremists (on both sides) who try to divide and conquer.

It has also been an opportunity to discuss these issues with my eldest son (11) who has not been brought up in a bigoted way, and to show him that not everyone shares the same values that we do (if you see what I mean).

The Woolwich attack was about as shocking as it's possible to get. The details of the April Jones trial likewise. These are horrible events that have happened in our country. We should be able to deal with accurate coverage of them. If you don't want to see it then don't watch it. I have to say I've been trying to avoid the trial details in particular. My dd is close in age to April and it's unbearable tbh - but it is as it is. I don't want that sanitised. Justice is not served by that.

Agent it was when they revealed some of the questions they'd asked him in court and his replies. It just creeped me out.

I haven't posted during the week and I don't like wading in to the middle of a bun fight long thread.

The most upsetting thing I saw was the press conference with the mans family, totally heartbreaking.

And the people who helped the bloke after he'd been attacked and talked to the murderers are much more deserving of attention than the freaks who carried it out.

So what do people suggest? Do we just not show or hear any thing bad in this world?
Should we censor everything unless it's happy stuff?

My apologies for the new thread, I wasn't aware of others. I agree we all need to recognise the fact this was a shocking attack, I just felt ill after catching some of the footage on tv. I can understand the severity without reliving the poor man's last moments.

I saw the news footage that night - I saw the footage of that man, holding a meat cleaver with blood on his hands saying "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". I was really, really shocked. Normally, that kind of stuff is edited out of mainstream TV.

When I went to work the next morning I saw the newspapers stand. The Sun was leading with "Soldior beheaded".

Beheading wasn't mentioned in the TV news report I had heard the night before.

I'm hoping that the "beheading" bit isn't true and that it's just the Sun being sensationalist as usual.

It is easy to abstract things away from their reality when they're on the news, you hear so many terrible things that you have to or you'd get dragged down with the shitness of it all.

Although there was outrage at the 7/7 bombings, it's hard to imagine the pain involved with 52 individuals being murdered and what their families are going through, but one man being murdered in such a way makes it very personal and something you can relate to.

I read about the attack before all the videos etc came out, and was just as horrified. Especially the couple thinking they were giving CPR, when in fact they were hacking away at him. That's what you expect in horror films.
At first I felt that it wasn't awful to release the videos, that we somehow needed to see what waa happening, almost to prove it actually happened. Now the shock has presided, I think they shouldn't have published all of it for the simple reason of the poor family that lost the man who was so brutally murdered. I also think that the psychos shouldn't get so much press, I don't want to see their pictures everywhere like they have gained fame somehow.

Also, I couldn't agree with the mindset of the man who said "an eye for an eye..."

I mean, who did he want "his opponents" to attack next?

And why did he want things i.e. "an eye for an eye..." to continue?

I mean, there's never an end to the "eye for an eye" philosophy is there?

I also hate all this 'lone wolf' crap - makes them sound like some sort of superhero - ugh loathesome.

The images were unbelievably shocking, like something you might have seen covered in Rwanda, but Woolwich?? Just beyond awful.
