To have just this second decided that spiders are ace

...because the stupid, flailing, pointless daddy-long-legs that has been pissing and pinging about in my bedroom for the last hour has just flown into a cobweb, panicked, flapped about and got itself suspended arse-upwards with all of its stupid flaily legs bound together?

Well played, spiders.

I think it's just because there are loads of them, Tumbleweed.

I'm trying to find a decent facts page about them, but they are such no-marks that it seems no-one in the world has bothered. Even Wikipedia says its page is neglected.

They're grown up leatherjackets, Devon, so if you have grass nearby and no local starlings to grub them up, you'll be inundated. My cats usually see to mine.

I love spiders but when I came to this house, no-one had used/hoovered the upstairs for years and even I was a little disconcerted to see these massive blighters trundling across the floor while I was in bed reading. I started to get a little tense about going to the loo during the night and standing on one. Squish......

I now hoover industriously and consequently have Spider Guilt.

DevonCiderPunk · 25/05/2013 09:01

Urgh! I hate leatherjackets! They're about the only things that make me feel a bit queasy when I'm gardening.

Typical of daddy long legs to start out life in such a disgusting manner.

Devon, you can't find a page because the correct name for DLL is Crane fly.

thanks Goblin... I did know that Smile

There are ten tarantulas upstairs atm. I am more concerned by the native species that has taken over the gas box, tbh...

PoppyAmex · 25/05/2013 09:53

I have never given DDL any thought until I read this thread and then stupidly googled DDL and saw a NEST of them.

It's seriously gross.

DevonCiderPunk · 25/05/2013 09:59

heh heh Goblin Smile

Somehow "crane fly" confers an importance they don't deserve.

A former colleague of mine called them "noo-noos" which is about their level, I think!

OP posts:
ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 25/05/2013 10:03

This is a daddy long legs and is a crane fly. So many people get them mixed up.

DDLs are fine by me (as are almost all spiders) but crane flies are just stupid and annoying. Why is it that when you try to put them outside they just fly back in to do their St Vitus dance all over the place again?

Spiders=good
Crane flies=stupid
Moths=stupid and a bit scary
Wasps=Vicious nasty creatures
Bees=lovely

I hate flies. I love spiders. Am debating about a pet tarantula too. DDL are cute though.

GoblinGranny · 25/05/2013 10:53

It seems to be a cultural difference, it's OK.

In the UK, we call crane flies Daddy Long Legs, and they are insects with wings, not arachnids.
www.realmonstrosities.com/2011/04/daddy-longlegs.html
In the US, it seems slightly different

JazzDalek · 25/05/2013 10:57

Artex I take them all the way down the road in the hope they'll move into someone else's house. Dp thinks I'm crazy but I swear if you just toss them out the door/window they sigh and come back in when you're not looking.

Spiders are wonderful creatures. Be kind to them!

magicstar1 · 25/05/2013 13:33

Oh crane flies totally freak me out. I was in the kitchen at 2 a.m. last week and felt a tickle on my face....it was a huge crane fly! I had a can of Raid and had to duck and dive across the kitchen to get it and spray like mad. Horrible dangly-legged monster.

pleasedo · 25/05/2013 15:11

just want to warn everyone ,always lift the seat of toilet to check before taking a ladylike piss ,went the other day, got up, turned round to press the flush , noticed a leg sticking out under the seat , lifted it up and a huge spider started running round the top of the toilet . yabu spiders are fucking creepy .

MadameOvary · 25/05/2013 15:13

Having just discovered a massive tegenaria gigantea (sp) in the garden, I completely agree. Crane flies are too crap to bother about imo, although I am loving the descriptions of them on here Grin

MadameOvary · 25/05/2013 15:15

Agree with the OP, that is. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate loo/spider incident pleasedo

Roomfor1more · 25/05/2013 15:21

pleasedo I'd be coffined if I saw that eight legged freak on the loo. I've been known to run a very rapid speed trying to get away from them, have locked myself in our en suite and rang dh in the living room to remove such things from bedrooms here. Made the mistake of going into the place in the zoo where they live, myself and ds, in his buggy made a very hasty retreat, I kept checking the buggy afterwards incase I picked up any passengers.... Jesus wept! YUCK!

DLL are grand, open the window, swat them out, job done. They remind me of the village idiot of the insect world, all that hopping about and then gets ejected from the premises Grin
