To not be particularly keen on the Radio 1 charts being on every sun teatime with DD8 an DS4

My DH thinks its great. I'm not so sure. He wants to make sure our DD is not excluded from playground gossip by being out of touch. But I don't think she needs to listen to the charts every week to know what the latest One Direction song is (which seems to be the principal band talked about). And also (old fogey alert) I think some of it is too old for her and def too old for DS4... Is it just me? (cowering now )

I don't see the harm, but I always have music on in the house.
The only problem is most of the music in the chart is crap

I think its as odd that your husband is insisting on it as it is you to be trying to ban it. Do your kids want to listen to it? So let them. If they don't? Don't.

Do they still have a chart run down on a Sunday? What time? Oh, the memories charts bath and bed. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

It does rather sound like he's sitting them down and making them listen, which is just as weird as banning it. Only radio 4 in this house, no ill effects on dd's social life as far as I can tell, and she still seems to know all about One Direction.

The Top Forty used to come out on a Tuesday (?) lunchtime and we all sat around listening to radios to hear what the new no1 was.

i'm with you OP. cant stand those annoying fuckwits on radio one. just play the music you idiots. no-one wants to hear you gabbling on.

but i do love 1D. even if they're only tiny tots.

I make mine listen to Radio 4. DH puts on 6 music occasionally. I don't think it will affect their social life

If you have digital radio and want kid-friendly advert free current cheesy pop, Fun Kids is good.

Also weekday daytimes they have good preschool stuff - action songs, nursery rhymes and episodes of Thomas the Tank/Angelina Ballerina, and the best bit - nap hour at 1!

The chart is full of some great stuff in between the shit. I really font see a problem with listening to the charts, unless, as pp said, he is sitting the kids down and making them listen.

1D is one group out of (approx) forty so hearing them can't be that frequent really.

What horseonabeach said, they'll find out about crap at school, you should be educating them in 'real' non manufactured, non exploitative music :)

I listen to LBC- no music at all

The DC are very judgey pants (but I do let them listen to the music on the memory stick thing on a Saturday- it's sport)

Radio 1 Charts

I think it's weird someone thinks their 8yo needs to listen to pop music countdown to have enough social awareness, I don't think that part is necessary at all.

We dont' listen to countdowns so I don't know what they're like; some songs definitely do have sordid content, agree there.

I think its a bit OTT really. But no I don't subject them to R3 we have a mixture of heart, magic, r2 and v occasionally classic, main reason is DD picks up song lyrics after hearing them once and some of the stuff on r1 is (imo) not suitable. Clearly I need to have a non ranty chat with DH...

YANBU. OUr DC are 8 and 5 and they're subjected to Radio 4 and to my shame, Smooth Radio. I like it.

If they want to enough, they can go on Youtube for the latest.

My objection would be to have radio on at meal time.

I grew up in a house where the radio was never off and even 30 years after leaving home I shudder. I like to choose what and when I listen to music.
I used to play music from all eras to DCs when they were little, never chart stuff though. DS2 now has very eclectic taste.

I'd rather the radio than the awful music videos!

I often subject my kids to 6 music on a Sunday afternoon.

Sometimes, they even enjoy it.

DS1 can't stand chart music. He's not the only one in his class. He even heckles a lot of the chart music that's played on Radio 2.
