...to think people can type in full without needing so many Acronyms?

BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 20:16

Its taken me long enough to learn LMAO, LOL, WTF, FTW, BUTTHURT...

But this site has its own list of acronyms

SD
HD
DH
DS
PS3
DD
MIL/MILF?
TT
DP
DW
DK
CC
BCC
FU
SU
STI
PS
PPS
KK

Seriously is it too tough to type "my daughter is the devil re-incarnated" or "husband's snoring is frightening the cat" instead of:

"MD is the D re-incarnated"

"H's snoring is F'ing the cat"

Seriously? I'm sure there is a dictionary somewhere here that I can learn all these new acronyms... but I have enough problems remembering my frikking postcode.

AIBTUMDFFU?
(Am I being totally unreasonable, my dear fellow forum users?)

phantomnamechanger · 16/05/2013 20:47

I don't think MN invented the acronym STI, OP!

MrsVamos · 16/05/2013 20:47

I'd LOVE to see the AIBU with MILF and BUTTHURT in it.

(BUTTHURT is internet speak for offended or hurt.)

AIBU ? I am married but know a MILF, do you think my wife would be BUTTHURT ?

Instant YABU, yes ?

phantomnamechanger · 16/05/2013 20:48

And if you're struggling with STI, you'll need an appointment in the morning

Hopasholic · 16/05/2013 20:52

SHALL I SPELL IT OUT?

CLICK THE 'ACRONYMS' LINK AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE

All shall be revealed. Now go and learn them because I'm going to test you on them tomorrow. Grin

MrsVamos · 16/05/2013 20:53

phantom

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 16/05/2013 20:54

We don't say FU here.
It's the no nonsense Fuck You.
That way there are no misunderstandings. HTH.

I'd quite like to be considered someone's milf, actually.

PiratePanda · 16/05/2013 20:55

We are allowed to say fuck on MN you know.

But to be pedantic, it's fricking or frigging (or frickin' if being extra colloquial), not frikking

BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 20:56

No idea what Lopez has said, decoded after about 30 mins, thanks for the reply.

Oh my god, Red, 108 acronyms!? Why can't we just use full English words? Just to pick a few:

AF - just say "period" or actually say "aunty flow"
AS - "Asperger's" would suffice
BBS - why not say "see you soon?"
BC - Sorry this is reserved for Jesus, not your kids :P
BF - breast feeding? serious "boyfriend" is way more common to use
BFP - "I'm pregnant"
BIL - Sounds like a name, say "brother in law"
BLW - this is soooo specific, what's the opposite of baby-led weaning. I mean when does the baby take a lead in its life?
CC - Carbon copy... but is controlled crying? The frik?
CD - already reserved for "compact disc" thank you.
DD - Daughter, is fine. I most certainly don't refer to mine as a darling!
DGS/DGD - I'm sure I've seen these acronyms in car adverts... do the more elderly folk actually type like this?
DS/DS - could be dear son/down's syndrome or in my world a Nintendo DS which the DS loves.

Seriously the "D" is redundant in all of these family situations especially when being moaned about.

EBF - Extraordinary boyfriend?
EMCS - just say "I chose Caesarean" frigging man up and stand by your decisions
EMSC - "I needed Caesarean"
EWCM - TMI...probably works here though
FFP - Free postage?
FF - Front wheel drive, not "formula feeding or forward facing car seat"... actually maybe makes sense thinking about it
FIL - My father in law is called "Phil"
IYSWIM - Just stop, I don't see what this means!
JFGI - Google.com
LMP - I'm sure this is a military post
MMTI - teeth itch? since when?
NAK - TMI! Seriously...

NN - Why not fracking write "No" .. I mean.. WTF?
NWOC - Is this not mother/father?
OH - I keep thinking this is a moment of a small epiphany "oh... I get it now"
OTT - "Over the top" is the only correct use for this
PFB - Offspring 1.
PG - is parental guidance!

PITA - I thought this was a charity or the kid off Hunger Games?

POAS - pregnancy test
RF - Rear wheel drive, front engine
RL - just...six... more letters
SAHM - where the frik is SAHF?
SALT - sorry but this is a seasoning
SIOB - seriously is this phrase that common?
SPD - either speed or something to do with bike pedals
SWI- LOL I love this
SWOI - sex

TTC - redundant due to SWI
UCL - this is a university in London

VBAC - sounds like banking

WAHM
WOHM - both have too many letters, "I work from home" or "I go to work" is just fine

YANBU - reminds me of ninjas "Anbu"
YABOS - "man up!"

YY - FFS!

Sorry honey. Sad

It did feel unnatural. I have never texted (text?) in my life.

I've never seen half of these acronyms. Anyone who can manage half of them is a genius in my eyes.

OliviaMMumsnet · 16/05/2013 21:02

Hello OP
Sorry you don't like our acronyms. Are our smilies any good?
Smile

AvrilPoisson · 16/05/2013 21:03

You have analysed this in far too much detail.
You must be male.

And we have SAHD btw.

HTH

BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 21:04

Hey don't be upset LRD, but what does LRD mean, a few of you have said it and I can't find it in the guide...?

Didn't realise I'd get so many responses!

OP posts:
BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 21:05

Olivia, I don't use smilies its just more code to remember .... :P

BTW how did you make your post stand out to me, is there a quoting feature here?

TIA

DIllIGAF

BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 21:06

Poisson, nice name, and yes I'm male but surely this can bother both genders? And SAHD isn't on the list, plus its sounds "sad"... :O

clicky me you know you wanna

meditrina · 16/05/2013 21:11

" Why can't we just use full English words? "

Loads of sites do. Feel free to post in them, not change the idiolect of is one.

HoneyDragon · 16/05/2013 21:11

Oliviaaaaaa

LRD's posted very rude offensive stuff on this thread!

LittleBearPad · 16/05/2013 21:11

He is male - according to his profile anyway. He is also not half as amusing as he thinks he is.

squoosh · 16/05/2013 21:12

Not to be pedantic but can I just point out that most examples being used here such as a LOL, DD, WTF, TBH etc. are not actually acronyms but in fact initialisms.

Initals that make a word such as NATO = acronym.
Initials that don't create a word such as WTF= initialism.

As you were ..............

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/05/2013 21:13

Olivia, I intimate that honey is engaged in a campaign of defamation. I cannot speculate as to which poster might have purloined my identity with the aforeseen filthy slang, but - in the sainted words of Shaggy, it wasn't me.

She's talking shit and all.

MrsVamos · 16/05/2013 21:14

SAHD = Stay At Home Dad

LRD is a shortened version of a posters nickname.

HTH Smile

BestParentEver · 16/05/2013 21:15

BearPad you can speak to me in second person instead of third person, thanks. :)
