To be incensed

I read the article by Liz Jones in today's Daily Mail on the new fashions at M&S overseen by Belinda Earl , described by LJ as 'the great white hope ' of M &S.
Am I nuts to be incensed by the use of this phrase? Surely Ms Jones is aware of the racist animus of the term? I'm aware she likes to shock and is valuable to DM precisely on that basis - but isn't this a step too far?

Makes sense, but I wouldn't have known. I absolutely detest boxing. Thumping people in the head isn't 'sport'

Anyway M&S resembles a great lumbering Great White Whale, even the ladies at WI don't like their stuff.

Caucasian is an outdated term. White is correct.

I knew the saying, never knew the origin. Therefore it didn't offend me.

Not sure whether I'm offended now, or not...

YANBU but YABU to expect the phrase "the article by Liz Jones in today's Daily Mail" to ever bring anything good in its wake.

It's considered racist to identify people by their skin color unless a pertinent detail, and even more so to then ascribe certain characteristics to them based on that. The phrase references a time and event when white people were upset by not being first, so pinned all their hope on re-establishing the 'correct' order of white people beating black people. So it's implying that M& S are hoping to regain their rightful top spot just as white people wanted to win triumph back from black people. I think a lt of people can see why that would be offensive.

As it seems highly unlikely that all other high street buyers are black, and this one buyer is white, then it is erroneous as well.

Bogeyface · 16/05/2013 01:53

IT is offensive, but I rather suspect that dear ol' LJ is too thick to realise that.

vivizone · 16/05/2013 02:05

Liz is offensively unattractive. You are not being unreasonable op.
