to ask if you know of any 'urban myths' that are actually true?

a colleague told me the other day that her husband had been to school with a brother and sister called Everard and Ophelia Dick. I was very dismissive, told her I'd heard that story several times before, that it was an urban myth and possibly on snopes.com.

Luckily I stopped short of saying that the story probably had racist undertones.

But I've just googled them and they're well documented in the same town that her husband is from. So the chances are he's right. I'm very Blush and will have to tell her so in the morning.

I get so used to these name tales being false and offensive that I didn't think there was any way it was going to be true.

Does anybody know if any of the others are true?

There is a child in my year group with the surname Mahboob. Obviously not an English name so would have a different pronunciation maybe in country of origin and not the same connotations either.

My MIL is a medical receptionist and she was horrified to tell me yesterday they just had a baby registered with the first name of La-a.

So it appears its not a myth! MIL isn't on MN and not the kind to tell fibs!

catlady1 · 12/05/2013 19:42

I know a Jordan Jordan, but he wasn't named that at birth, I think his mother either divorced or remarried and his surname was changed along with hers.

I also know a John Johnson, and a Jo(ann) King :)

And a Robert Roberts.

manicinsomniac · 12/05/2013 19:47

yellowhat - really?! Wow, that's the kind of thing I was thinking of, exactly.

It's become so knee-jerk on mn to shout 'no you don't, urban myth, snopes, racist' whenever someone says they know a le-a of any of the others that it seems (as I have proved) there is a danger of saying it to people irl (and yes, I know I was rude, did my OP not make that clear!).

And, just occasionally, they're apparently right!

My cousin's daughter is called Genna Taylor - seriously.
I never noticed the two words together for about 10 years because we just obviously called her by her first name and I never put the two together until someone pointed it out!

The myth about the computer that has a 'cup-holder' must have come true somewhere, given the amount of stupid things people do with computers.

FaceCake · 12/05/2013 19:51

I know a Chris Peacock. Never fails to make me smile. His parents didn't realise until too late.

Yawn4theday · 12/05/2013 19:51

Years ago, when it was not so PC, I worked for a large institution. Staff would make up names on forms and get junior colleagues to go into the waiting room and call them out.

One example - Matista Richie. Can't really say some of the others.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 12/05/2013 19:52

My granddad had a friend called Arthur Pye - always made me snigger!

sparkleshine · 12/05/2013 19:54
