To return an unworn, still labelled dress then re-buy at the new almost half sale price?

Went in today and the dress I brought for a party has £20 off now. It's slightly too small so was going to return and exchange anyway but now I think I should return it and then re-buy at the new cheaper price in the next size up. Would you?

I work in retail and in a store that has continuous promotions on high priced items!
Technically our refund policy doesn't allow this, but I've yet known anyone I work with to say no to somebody in a situation like yours.

Some places will only refund at the price the item is currently selling at. You might get away with simply swapping for the different size though.

I've done that a few times! In fact I did it with my engagment ring!

We bought it, and the very next day were in town shopping and saw that the jewlers had 25% off all diamond rings Shock. That was a huge amount off my ring. So I went home and took it straight back!

They didn't question me at all (it was unworn and had the reciept), and handed me a wad of cash that I carried around the shops and wandered back a couple of hours later and re bought it.

I am shameless though.

I've done it with clothes a few times too. Always unworn and with a reciept though.

Well I can but try. Yes still have receipt. I actually went in today as I was passing and wanted to see if it was worth taking the dress back ie had the next size up.

You'll get your money back if you have the receipt, otherwise it would be the current price. I would, yes and then go to a different till to buy the discounted one

So long as you have your receipt, the shop are legally obliged to refund you the price you paid for it regardless it now being in the sale. Take someone with you, get the refund and get them to buy next size up for you (devious emotion)

Well, if it's too small, it's no good anyway!

Can you take someone with you so it's not obvious what you're doing?

Or get a refund at one counter & buy at another if possible?

Beamur, they can only get away with that if the customer either doesn't have a receipt or is out of the refund period (usually 28 days)

Mum47, unless dress is faulty then the shop don't legally have to refund. Most shops will refund, but under their own policy, not because they legally have to.

I think I will go in, get the refund, go for lunch then wander back in again and hope for the best Grin.

I wouldn't even bother buying it at another till or getting someone else to buy it!

It won't be a problem I'm sure. Asyou are buying a different size, ie a different product code, then the till should refund the smaller one at the original selling price as stated on your receipt, then sell you the bigger one at the current selling price, therefore earning you a refund.

As has been said, it is a shops own policy to offer refunds on non faulty items. They have no legal requirement to do so.

In m&s I bought some fancy cushions - when I got home 2 beads were hanging off one of them and being that they were expensive I took it back the next day which had a 15% off event - so they swapped the cushion and refunded me the difference in the price of the cushion - so I wonder if they have to infact do that as a rule?

I thought if the item had been reduced in the sale , you would only be refunded the lower price??

nohalfmeasures - if you paid full price and still have the receipt they will refund you what you paid for it.

Good luck if he stock is on sale. Unlikely you will get full price unless he garment is faulty. The fact you bought incorrectly having under estimated your size is not grounds to return.

Not grounds for return? I have never not received a refund when returning an item. I don't think I have ever been asked why either. So luckily most clothes retailers don't think that. In this shop I am usually an XS but it's slightly too tight across the back so need to go up to S. They have said themselves there is often discrepancies across the sizing so I am sure they'll be sympathetic.

If the shop gives refunds normally and you are within the required time frame for that then absolutely go in and ask for a refund on the one you have and just buy the reduced one in the size you need. Whyever not? Confused.

I did exactly this with DH's Christmas present, a Mulberry holdall - took it back to Selfridges the day after boxing day for a refund and immediately repurchased it, getting £500 back - DH was even more pleased with it then Grin

YANBU. The only place you can't rebuy is in M&S, the meanies. Mind you, I hope you wouldn't have bought a top from there....
