DD, age 5, and I went on a bike ride today. She was leading and as she went past a garden she started singing very loudly. A massive Rottweiler jumped up at garden gate and barked really loudly, making DD jump so much she fell off her bike. Luckily she fell onto grass and was fine, owner went it to garden to see why dog was barking, said he was friendly and DD was stroking him so all fine in my opinion. When she told DP tonight however he thought I should've had a go at the dog owner and that such a big dog shouldn't be in front garden. WIBU to not have said anything?

Of course YANBU. As you say - the dog was in it's own garden, not roaming free in the park on on the street.

Also, your dd was fine about it, so no issue to worry about.

Precisely, the dog was on his own property. DD probably made him jump with her 'delightful' singing, he made her jump by barking - even Stevens IMO. DP thought it was dangerous because a child might try to stroke him over front gate and he might not have been friendly. I pointed out that our children know better than to stroke a strange dog without checking first so for us it's irrelevant anyway. Ironically it's usually me that says something if it needs saying anyway, never dp

I was out today with DCs. Bike lane in the centre of the beachfront. Big daft dog runs from the beach and nearly collides with female cyclist who proceeds to yell f* off really loudly in direction of slightly startled dog. Was a bit and also a bit at all the passers by hoiking up their bosoms in disgust.

My dog is seemingly magnetically attracted to bikes, he cannot let one pass without getting in its way.

Saw a passer by kick out at a dog that took him and his partner by surprise by bounding behind them barking :( was such softy bouncy dog.

Dog in garden, it's the cyclist who should take care not to upset it.

I dont think you should have had a go at them but I am very surprised at the number of people that think it is ok for a dog to behave in such an antisocial and unpleasant way.

Big dog today was far away from cyclists running around on a beach and bounded away unexpectedly towards walkway. Just one of those things and really didn't warrant such an extreme reaction from cyclist IMO.

I would have felt very intimidated by a Rottweiler growling or barking at me through a gate, so I don't thionk your DH is BU

WTF are you supposed to do with your dog?
We can't take them out or somebody will whinge about every minor indiscretion.
Keep them safely fenced up in your garden and passers by will whinge that their barking made them jump.
Dog owners can't win really.

Tropical - dogs bark, it isn't antisocial unless its prolonged and causing disruption which is wasn't.
Sunlight - you haven't heard her singing - it's pretty scary!

Ryanboy - a Rottweiler can't control how loud he barks, bit daft to suggest this breed would make you intimidated but another might not - not as if there can be a list of non intimidating dogs that are permitted in gardens

Agree with Lady and I'm not a dog owner or have particular liking of dogs.

How do you prevent it. They're dogs not humans so you can't really reason with them/take their lego away/promise them ice cream etc to ensure good behaviour.

LittleL you've reminded me of when I was a kid, and on the way to school we used to sneak past a garden where a bloodhound lived, he had the hugest scariest bark. And made us jump everytime.
In hindsight, being a bloodhound he could smell is coming a mile off!

I have had a neighbour complain to the HA about my dog barking 'all the time'. She only barks when their kids are out in the street banging a ball against my fence. The HO took so little notice they decided to film my dig barking. They also filmed the ball being banged against my fence. The HO wrote them a warnign about it!!

The dog in the OPs case was only doing its job!! YANBU!!
