To think this woman took baby wearing to another level

In a shop with my ds looking at baby stuff and a mum comes in with her two dcs, one in a buggy, another in a sling.

The child in the sling looked about 5! Grin

He was that tall that when she knelt down to pick something out of the buggy his feet touched the floor and he jumped up which made him bang his head on her chin I had to turn away or I might've laughed
I may sound like a cow but I smiled at her when she first came in and she just sneered at me before launching into loud parenting.

There is a Chinese lady near me who is TINY and carries her baby in a sling thing on her front. The baby faces forwards. Trouble is, she is so small and her baby quite big that at first glance it looks like a giant baby is walking towards you as it half conceals her face. Always make me smile.

GirlWiththeLionHeart · 05/05/2013 08:03

You're all missing the point: it wasn't a piggyback ffs! I used to have piggybacks all the time too when I was 3/4 fgs.

I'm not really keen on buying another though given how rarely it will get used vs how much they cost :( just wondered if there was a trick to using the smaller carriers.

YoniBottsBumgina · 05/05/2013 09:28

That is a good point chrome, I stopped carrying DS on my front when he got so big I couldn't see where I was going!

YoniBottsBumgina · 05/05/2013 09:31

OP I think the thread has just got to that stage where nobody cares about the specific situation in the OP and have descended into "You should never pick a child up ever" vs "You should never let your child's feet touch the ground" and all variations in between.

GirlWiththeLionHeart · 05/05/2013 09:36

I think you're right Yoni :)

Would be ok until ds3 decided to have a tantrum then we would both end up on the floor I think Grin

My lad is 23mo and in age 4-5 clothes. I know, I know-he's a monster. Anyway, I carry him on my back in a Mei Tei (fabric square with tie straps) if we're going a long way, but if we're in town and he's likely to want to be up and down a bit, I pop him on my front, as it's quicker to get him up, he can snuggle in if it's a bit windy/cold/sun's too bright. I will, no doubt, still be carrying him sometimes in a year's time, when he's nearly 3, and probably wearing age 5-6 or 6-7 clothes-it's comfy for us both, easier than pushing an empty buggy around, and who can turn down the extra cuddles and kisses?!

humberthumbert · 05/05/2013 14:44

I dislike prams and only ever carried. Occasionally done the double carry ith one 3 year old (wanted a rare nap say) on the back and baby feeding in another sling on the front. Got some odd looks on the train once, but realised that was my nipple poking out (baby had come off then boob)

I am tiny and it does look silly. My husband does similar and was once called a 'fucking gay cunt' by a carload of rough looking women driving past.

redwallday · 05/05/2013 21:03

For people looking for a supportive toddler size sling I can highly recommend the Tula toddler. Fits my 2.5 stone 22 month old as well as my 3.2 stone 4 year old perfectly.

humberthumbert · 05/05/2013 21:08

I also like the boba for the older toddler and still use a woven wrap as you can tie it with a high back

EggsMichelle · 05/05/2013 21:21

Lionheart I agree with you, if I saw that mother and child I'd have "bitty" going round in my head! I struggle with my lump of a child and he's only 5m.

humberthumbert · 05/05/2013 21:34

I I do bitty too. Nothing wrong with bitty

hazeyjane · 05/05/2013 22:53

People that know about slings, can i hijack, please?

I often have to carry my ds, nearly 3, 15kg, low muscle tone -so often quite floppy, with a tendency to slump. I have been using a Baba Sling that I got second hand when he was tiny, it is ok, but not great, and kills my back now he is so heavy. Any suggestions for something, easy to get on and get him into?

Cloverer · 05/05/2013 22:57

I have a toddler size Rose and Rebellion - any toddler or pre-school sized buckled carrier (18" or 20" sized) would be fine. Easy to use once you have the hang of it, can front or back carry, very comfy.

AncientCrone · 06/05/2013 08:13

Anything is going to be comfier than a Babasling! I have a buckled carrier too (Wompat) and love it. Woven wrap also good because it distributes weight, unlike Babasling. Or lots recommend a ring sling for toddlers (don' work for me though). Have you got a local sling library where you can try some?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/05/2013 08:19

I saw the title in active convo's and thought the thread was something to do with the latest Doctor Who episode... Blush

ben5 · 06/05/2013 08:20

fakebook I have to support you? I thought it said weaned to and now I can do nothing but laugh at this post!!! Both ds think I have gone mad!!!

KentuckyFriedChildren · 06/05/2013 08:21

HazeyJane where abouts are you? I used to be a sling librarian and I can ask on Sling Libraries fb page who is nearest you so you can try some out if that helps Smile

hazeyjane · 06/05/2013 08:42

I hadn't thought of a sling library (didn't know they existed!!) that is a great idea.

Kentucky, I am in Wilstshire.

The babasling was actually not too bad when he was a baby, and I suppose I didn't expect to still be using it when he is nearly 3 and walking. But in Feb when he had pneumonia, I ended up using it loads, because he was just so tired and clingy, and it really helped in hospital. However my back still feels knackered from using it!

BrittaPie · 06/05/2013 08:49

I have been known to carry my 6yo (briefly) for a funny treat :-). Maybe he just wanted a cuddle?

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/05/2013 09:38

Hazeyjane, I was going to PM but you can't on the mobile site! How silly.

If you're in Warwickshire, you're in luck. Google jellybeanslings Warwickshire or pouchlings, both run by a lovely lady who has been making slings for years now and has recently started to hire out different brands too.She will be horrified to hear you've been struggling along with a babasling for so long and will definitely help you to find something suitable.

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/05/2013 09:40

There did used to be a sling meet but it closed down :(

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/05/2013 09:42

Oh I've just realised you said Wiltshire Blush

KentuckyFriedChildren · 06/05/2013 12:40

hazeyjane I will post it up and find out where your nearest meet/library is Smile
