AIBU? I've had to call Tesco mobile twice today and they ask my name and my password...I say "It's Neo Maxizoomdweebie" and they then say "Alright thank's Neo...how can I help you?"

And I'm thinking NO! Call me "Miss Mazizoomdweebie please!"

Some companies say "Ok do you mind if I call you Neo?" and I say "Yes...I do actually." and I can HEAR them go Hmm

But they then call me by my title and 2nd name. One operator today called me Neo and then reduced that to "love".!!

I AM a bit old fashioned...but come on!

It always comes down to class on MN.

What a load of bollocks.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 01/05/2013 19:32

Terry's class has nothing to do with this. I mix with a very broad group both professorially and socially and in my experience class doesn't come into it.

Thank you Usual. The hilarious thing is that it's only the screaming middle classes who give a shit.

True, neo. It's only the supposed MC on mn that bang on about class.

TerrysAllGold · 01/05/2013 19:36

I don't think we can say that class does or doesn't come into this. We can only say how we see it.

I too mix with a very broad group both professionally and socially and in my experience class does come into it, NeoMaxiZoomDweebie. Sorry if that offends you but I can only speak from my own experience.

usualsuspect · 01/05/2013 19:38

Well from my experience of being WC I think you don't know what you are talking about.

TerrysAllGold · 01/05/2013 19:39

You're entitled to your opinion, usualsuspect, just as I'm entitled to mine.

I know a Lydia and she hates people calling her Lyd or even worse Lyds.

I do t blame her.

I also have a name which people shorted to a made up word. I hate it, especially of I don't really know the person. It's rude IMO to shorten someone's name unless you're introduced to them, with the shortened version.

IWillGetThere. You're comment was very rude and rather goady.

Pilgit · 01/05/2013 19:41

I absolutely loathe it - it puts my back right up! I remember my mum getting really annoyed with a new gym opening that used her first name without asking - boy did they get a large piece of her mind (she is fierce when crossed). It is meant to make you feel more comfortable - all it does with me is make me think they are rude.

usualsuspect · 01/05/2013 19:42

I'd much rather be called by my first name.

ExcuseTypos · 01/05/2013 19:44

Class doesn't come into it at all, what a loads of bollocks.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/05/2013 19:45

I don't think you're being U if that's how you feel. But I do think you're being incredibly old fashioned and very uptight.

You do realise it's 2013, not 1957 don't you? Are you wearing a hat and matching gloves while typing here?

usualsuspect · 01/05/2013 19:46

Iwillgetthere likes to be addressed as Mrs Leadbetter Wink

TerrysAllGold · 01/05/2013 19:46

What's the general consensus on sir or madam when someone doesn't know the name of the person to whom they're speaking at all?

I often use it and generally with no reaction from women while men tend to comment favourably upon being called sir. In fact the only time I've had a stroppy response was from a woman who was utterly convinced that I was calling her madam in an attempt to insult her.

squoosh · 01/05/2013 19:48

I despise madam. Sound so matronly.

I once got called Lord Squoosh, but that was my fault, I'd ticked the wrong box. Delusions of grandeur Grin

TerrysAllGold · 01/05/2013 19:48

Apologies for the grammar in my last post. I was trying to do three things at once and failed miserably.

squoosh · 01/05/2013 19:48

I'd given my self a sex change and an aristocratic title!

usualsuspect · 01/05/2013 19:48

I loathe being called madame.

TerrysAllGold · 01/05/2013 19:49

Grin squoosh

TidyDancer · 01/05/2013 19:49

I find this a truly ridiculous thing for anyone to care that much about.

Am happy to be called by my first name.

OldRichandGrateful · 01/05/2013 20:02

Mrs Grateful if you don't mind.

So it seems I am not working class because I say WHAT instead of pardon, but I am working class for preferring to be called Mrs.

I call the a toilet the WC and I say looking-glass instead of mirror.

Am I posh?

Icelollycraving · 01/05/2013 20:13

Yanbu. I think it's rude to call someone by their first name if you are dealing with them in a professional context.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 01/05/2013 20:15

RichardG do you really, truly say looking glass?

OP posts:
OldRichandGrateful · 01/05/2013 20:25

Yes, I do truly say looking-glass (but only if my DM is listening)! She has Hyacinth Bucket delusions!!
