to not get what is wrong with 'squash'?

I guess this is a bit of thread about a thread Blush A lot of people on another thread are saying they don't like their DC having squash but will allow fruit juice or smoothies. I am wondering why?
My first choice of drink for DS is water or milk. But he is allowed squash, juice or milkshake occasionally.

All the hysteria around squash has always made me a bit Confused The acid levels in juice are much higher than in well diluted squash. And if anyone saw Bang goes the Theory recently (the one about sugar) will know that there are no reliable studies that show that sweeteners are harmful to health either.
I really can't see what the problem is. My daughter has had squash from around 2 years old in an open cup. Very well diluted so that it barely flavours the water.

Sugar is not poison its a food fgs.
Now greggs sausage rolls on the other hand.....(ducks)

Beatrixpotty · 29/04/2013 20:41

I grew up on squash. We never had "low calorie" as it was called then.I've got quite a few fillings and maybe it was to blame.I'd like my kids to have better teeth,& I don't like the look of all the crap on the label,sugar-free has just as much. So it's water & milk at home ,but when out they have squash/fruit juice/fruit shoot /some of my diet coke or whatever is available.

echt · 29/04/2013 20:54

And while we're talking about drinks, children don't need to drink milk after they're weaned any more than any mammal.

WorraLiberty · 29/04/2013 20:58

I don't allow my kids to drink water because fish piss in it.

girliefriend · 29/04/2013 21:07

Grin at worra

My dd loves hot blackcurrent and it really is not top of my list of parenting things to worry about!!

People need to get a grip imo Grin

gotthemoononastick · 29/04/2013 21:26

My children made hundreds of Sodastream drinks ad lib. in the 70's.Sugar and saccharine versions.
They are alive and well and too highly educated now.Anything sugar,E-numbers and Aspartame is from Lucifer at present!Don't even start with the Mercury in fish.

AlwaysWashing · 29/04/2013 21:37

Sometimes mn can be really useful as well as entertaining - I've been merrily giving my 2 yo weak no added sugar Robinsons thinking it was better than the full whack sugar type for ages now. Was thinking about his teeth etc but didn't even think about the aspartame and other nasties that might be replacing the sugar.
Wondering whether to ditch squash altogether then and go with watered down fresh juice - plain water not an option now.

SomethingOnce · 29/04/2013 21:38

I'd rather see children drinking fruit juice than squash with sugar, but squash with sugar is preferable to squash with acesulfame potassium (k), saccharin and aspartame.

I'm not too keen on sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate either.

So, yeah, I don't like squash because of the weird shit they put in it.

BarredfromhavingStella · 29/04/2013 21:42

Grin Worra

Not an hysteria I take much notice of tbh, mine have juice, squash, milk, tea, hot chocolate-in fact come to think of it the only things they don't have are coffee & alcohol...

wiltingfast · 29/04/2013 22:11

sigh why do people worry so much about these things? How did we all survive the 60s/70s/80s/(insert decade here)? Grin

Bit shocked about the water though, I'd no idea fish pissed in it!

wonderingagain · 30/04/2013 00:35

Sugar is really really bad for teeth though. Every time you take sugar it starts to eat away at tooth enamel. No other food does this. When we eat fruit we masticate and salivate and that deals with most of the acids and sugars but drinking juice, milk or sugary squash must be done with meals or should be rinsed off afterwards.

likeitorlumpit · 30/04/2013 00:52

oh ffs our precious little princes and princesses are not going to die just because they dared have a drink of squash. listen to yourselves would half of you really stand there with your real friends discussing this rubbish or would they tell you to get a bloody life.

cumfy · 30/04/2013 02:38

I really don't give a flying fuck.

But if you really want to confuse me refer to squash as juice.

Don't know why, but some people do.

Toadinthehole · 30/04/2013 08:11

Well, I think squash is fine for children -it contains sugar, which as everyone knows is a carbohydrate. However, wine is even better as it's got fruit in it.

But no way would I give children something like water. It contains dihydrogen monoxide, which is a very, very dangerous chemical.

SomethingOnce · 30/04/2013 08:18

I'm about 57% dihydrogen monoxide so not too worried about that.

I'm about 0% aspartame though, and proud of it.

Nil points for smug, unfunny ancient hoax reference.

bettycocker · 30/04/2013 08:19

Fruit juice and smoothies aren't exactly good for your teeth either.

All things in moderation though. I doubt that the occasional drink of squash will cause harm to DC.

I don't get anything with artificial sweetners, only high juice. That is rationed because of the sugar content and because I'm a miserly old git.

Toadinthehole · 30/04/2013 10:47

... and 0% ironia as well.

SomethingOnce · 30/04/2013 10:51

Damn straight Grin

aldiwhore · 30/04/2013 10:55

Our dentist said weak squash was better than even diluted fresh juice. My dietician recommends everything fresh (can't really fault that attitude). Whatever you do, you'll be wrong. Even your children DO only drink spring water.

I tend to avoid giving the same drinks all the time. So today they've had diluted apple juice, tomorrow they'll probably have squash etc., in addition to water...

I think the important factor is how strong you make your child's drinks... one person's squash is another person's syrup.

Smoothies are out, unless the children make their own, one orange, one banana and handful of strawberries and NO MORE. It's very easy to over indulge on fruit in a smoothy. I doubt many children would sit down and eat 26 oranges in one go.

I am also a BADMUVVA as my children sometimes have coca cola. Shoot me now.

ophelia275 · 30/04/2013 11:18

I don't have a problem with squash. I buy Sainsbury's which has sucralose as a sweetener (so doesn't rot the teeth) and I put a tiny bit in so that it is 90% water. My children really like it and it gives them a tiny bit of sweetness. I think it is better than fruit juices as those tend to be high sugar (even if they are more natural).

wiltingfast · 02/05/2013 13:40

omg aldiwhore get you gone off this thread now! Grin

TeenTwinsToddlerandTiaras · 02/05/2013 14:12

I am a weird one who spends hours in the supermarket reading labels Blush.

DCs hate water (no taste) so drink plenty of squash and diluted half/half fruit juice (not that concentrated muck mind). I only buy 'high juice' squash with sugar. DCs will not drink any with aspartame/fake sugar stuff that I can't pronounce, in it as they say it's TOO sweet/tastes disgusting, the same with the very occasional coke, lemonade etc. I try to buy stuff with REAL sugar in it and they all have very healthy teeth/no weight issues. I'd rather they drank a bit of sugar than nothing at all!

Makes me stabby when I go to buy something that previously had SUGAR in it and they've changed it FAKE SUGAR, harumphhhh.

Tanith · 02/05/2013 15:08

We don't have squash because DS so easily reacted to additives, but I didn't really see the harm in moderation...

...until my sister gave all the children a blackcurrant squash drink at my nephew's birthday party.
Within minutes, they were bouncing off the walls. I was shocked at how suddenly their behaviour changed, and how noisy and rowdy they became.

I saw a programme once about controlling ADHD through diet: squash was one of the things they banned due to the additives.

It is the Devil's own nectar Smile

FariesDoExist · 02/05/2013 22:04

Mine have squash, I'm not too worried.

It's bread I fret over!! White, wholemeal, brown, 50/50?

EleanorFarjeon · 02/05/2013 22:14

We have never given squash or fruit juice to dcs. Never offered an alternative to water or milk, so they didn't get a taste for anything else.

We'd have concerns about sugars & acids. They get enough vitamins from actual fruit.

I have at least 8 fillings so I am paranoid about their teeth as I'd be gutted if they had any decay.
