AIBU?

to not get what is wrong with 'squash'?

I guess this is a bit of thread about a thread Blush A lot of people on another thread are saying they don't like their DC having squash but will allow fruit juice or smoothies. I am wondering why?
My first choice of drink for DS is water or milk. But he is allowed squash, juice or milkshake occasionally.

Squash is repulsive.

Chiggers, I buy Sainsbury's Value fromage frais and I'm sure I remember spotting that the sugar content was lower than Petit Filous, which of course I claim is the reason why I buy them not solely because they are a quarter of the price

YANBU. Squash is mostly water with a little sugar, perhaps with a bit of fruit juice in there. "Natural" drinks contain sugars too, whether it's fruit sugar or just sucrose. Squash is more refreshing than most drinks and if you buy it without artificial colours/flavours/sweeteners then there's nothing wrong with it. It's cheaper too. I certainly wouldn't be put off squash for reasons of snobbery.

squashes usually contain artificial sweeteners.
if they didn't I would be happy for my dc to drink it regularly.

I don't like squash because it is crappy sugary water, devoid of nutritional value and terrible for teeth.

I don't allow my DDs to drink it-which is easy enough as we don't keep it in the house. I'm sure they drink it at friend's houses, school etc. which isn't something I can police, so I just keep my fingers crossed.

My two mainly have water with occasionally an orange or apple juice. I'm not violently against squash, and drink it myself, but can't see any point giving it to the DC when they're perfectly happy with water because that's what they've always had.

Our dentist always says if they have to have flavour, squash is better than juice.

I don't drink anything at all apart from squash - so can someone tell me, as an adult, is sugar free or regular squash better for me?

Or am I doomed either way?

Ah, yes flick. I was thinking about it in the context of sugar/ artificial sweeteners etc.
Humans aren't naturally lactose tolerant after about 5yo I believe, but obviously people must develop tolerance or everyone would be like me and vom after milk!

We don't have squash often. DD drinks milk and water mostly...she has squash at my Mums and sometimes here. I only buy high juice and I won't buy the sugar free version. Mainly because I think artificial sweeteners taste like absolute shit. I'd rather have PROPER sugar...just not as much/often.

Sometimes she gets a sprinkle of Nesquik in her milk though I'm the Devil

I'm the classic bf-er who makes all you ff-ers feel better - DD had nothing but bf for 6 months, fed her till she was 2 and a half, but all that breastmilk left her with a terrible sweet tooth! Turned her nose up at plain water from day one ... has always had fruit juice with water, then the dreaded Fruit Shoot when out (bad mummy always forgets to bring a drink after so long only needing her boobs with her), now squash at home as I thought possibly kinder on teeth than fruit juice Blush Blush

"It's often consumed in large quantities (because of perceived calcium benefits etc) but we can't tolerate it."

Really? I seem to tolerate milk just fine. I thought that only a few people were lactose intolerant, though my understanding is that back in the day, lactose intolerance after a certain age (as I think the OP said) was the norm, and then a mutation in the gene that codes for the enzyme that metabolises lactose meant it kept being produced after this age, and as this gave the cattle herders with the mutation a survival advantage in times of low food availability, it became the norm.

I personally think normal is better than sugar-free. Normal Coke is better for you than Diet Coke as well apparently :p

In terms of squash versus juice, they're both full of sugar. Squash is probably the cheaper option because it dilutes better than fruit juice does. Fruit juice is more natural though. It's what we'd depend upon if there were no nice companies making alternatives for us :p

I personally think everyone should just drink whatever they like and other people should just stop judging. As long as everything is in moderation (and age appropriate before someone pipes up about drugs and alcohol or something ridiculous!) then it'll be fine.

Like many people have said, they'll go to school/parties/friend's houses anyway and they'll get different stuff there. In the end they'll all grow up and eat and drink loads of rubbish anyway because that's just what teenagers/young adults do unless they're the type that aren't inclined to eat rubbish (health fanatics maybe?). Don't worry about these things!

Milk is a natural laxative, presumably because of our "intolerance" but I love a nice glass of chilled milk.

There are plenty of squashes without sweeteners - try Rocks or Sainsbury's or Waitrose High Juice.

Is it? I have never noticed it having that effect on me and I drink plenty of it.

I have heard though that people with dairy heavy diets do tend to exude a buttery/milky smell, however! Yikes.

There is no evidence of harmful effects of sweeteners. There is a LOT of evidence of harmful effects of sugar (including sugar in fruit juice).

There is nothing wrong with squash, milk, smoothies etc.

All in moderation.

Personally my kids enjoy a beer or two.

My kids both love cake and chocolate. They are allowed that in moderation and so we don't buy squash at all to drink at home. I think sugary drinks are so so damaging, because they provide absolutely loads of empty calories, and people don't tend to think of them when thinking about the amount of sugar their kids consume, simply because they're a drink. My brother has lost about three stone, admittedly he has been exercising more, but also he has cut out the Coke, which has made a massive difference to his weight.

I used to have a bottle and then a cup of squash by my bedside at night, and drink squash all day every day until I went to uni at 19. I was a skinny kid, but probably because I didn't really eat enough protein/nutritious food because I always felt full from the massive glasses of squash I consumed. I have fillings in every one of my back teeth on both sides of my mouth because of this. I really don't want that for my kids, because having crappy teeth is not fun at all.

They have squash/fizzy drinks when we go for a meal out, or on special occasions, so it's not a case of banning them completely and making them more desirable. But tbh neither of them like it that much, because when you're used to drinking water, and sometimes milk, squash tastes overpoweringly of chemicals and not much of fruit.

Children are much more delicate these days compared to when we were little. We could handle sugar, sweeteners, crisps, fizzy juice etc but little darlings these days can only tolerate natural and wholesome foods, anything else is neglect.

I'm too relaxed in my parenting style and can often be found dishing up loads of juice of whatever type the kids fancy to wash down their sugary, salty snacks. Doesn't seem to affect their health, behaviour or sporting abilities.

Live and let live peeps.

just for those saying they get the "normal" rather than no added sugar squash because they'd rather sugar than sweeteners, well it has both. I was going to swap for the same reason, then looked at the label. We get through one standard bottle about every 2-3 weeks and I drink some of that - like everything, moderation is the thing.

Aldi high juice doesn't have sweeteners in it.

To be honest...the main reason I avoid them is because in my opinion they make everything taste of chemicals...

Diet Coke is VILE....Fat Coke is nectar of the Gods (and yes I know it's really bad for you...I don't drink it often any more...the bastard delicious addictive stuff that it is)
