to not get what is wrong with 'squash'?

I guess this is a bit of thread about a thread Blush A lot of people on another thread are saying they don't like their DC having squash but will allow fruit juice or smoothies. I am wondering why?
My first choice of drink for DS is water or milk. But he is allowed squash, juice or milkshake occasionally.

I grew up in squash and cherry aid, but my mum taught me to brush my teeth properly. I have no fillings and still only drink squash or fizz.

People are so precious.

PS michelle I recently joined slimming world as I put on loads of weight with DS3 who's now 4 months. I drank litres of pure orange juice. The SW consultant reckons that's why I put on so much weight. I've cut juice out almost completely and I lost 11lbs with out that much effort Grin

I'm a real life squash disallower :) I don't give them fruit juice either

Mine are only 4 and 2 though. I'm not planning on keeping it up when they're teenagers!

On squash, not in it! Although I did drink a lot of it!

most hot drinks - tea and coffee - have caffeine which is addictive and stops you getting a good nights sleep

hot choc is full of calories

squash is mostly water with flavouring and as an adult I would rather have a glass of that if thirsty.

alcohol only on Fri or sat night Smile

does anyone else have adverse reactions with fruit juice?

Fruit juice is really bad for teeth. I know several people whose DC have had fillings/extractions caused by drinking too much juice despite being very 'up' on healthy eating, no sweets, etc. It's best to drink fruit juice with a meal.

My approach is to only let the DC have water/milk most of the time (e.g at home, at CMs and at school, so about 90% of the time), but to happily let them have any old crap when we're out and about. Everything in moderation, much the same as my own approach to food (I eat really healthily 90% of the time, but don't deny myself crisps or chocolate if I'm out and fancy some).

My DD drinks a cup of squash every day, usually with lunch or dinner. The Robinsons no added sugar orange and pineapple. I must be a bad mother Grin.

It's sugar in water and terrible for teeth. Ds has never had it at home Juice is just as bad but attacks the teeth as it's acidic rather than sugary.

Oops - forgot to say that I don't know what's wrong with squash really, apart from the fact that it tastes bloody awful.

It's the aspartame.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with squash at all, but I only buy the sugary variety.

I love orange and pineapple squash, drink gallons of it!

I hate squash it all tastes vile except vimto and really strong ribena. I am trying to loose weight so I only drink water or tea.
School have indoctrinated DS1 and he won't drink full sugar squash so I buy juice and sugar free. All my DC drink water, two of them drink milk but they all have some sort of juice as well.

Why squash is a party must-have baffles me though, I don't really see it a treat drink and I don't think my DC would either.

seriouscakeeater shaking hands can pass germs, much better to let them have a quick wave at each other instead.

just out of interest, people do realise that fruit juice has sugar in it too, right?

Report
JollyPurpleGiant · 29/04/2013 16:01

DS is 2 and only gets diluting juice if he's ill. And then it is full sugar ribena.

I drink plenty of It myself though.

I have a strong objection to artificial sweetners and I really struggle to drink water first think in the morning so I start most days with Ribena or High Juice.

I don't like anything with Aspartame in and don't give it to my children. I don't have squash in the house and fruit juice is limited to once a day with lunch. The rest of the time its water or milk.

I am a squash disallower, well I wouldn't be a loon and tell them no at a party but I will not buy it. It's mostly full of aspartame and or sodium benzonate, they're both pretty nasty and we don't even yet know long term health effects of aspartame. I am not a sugar is banned lentil weaver type but I just see no need for squash, we don't really have juice either, sometimes as a treat milk or water in this house, though dc4 is partial to a sip of my tea Grin

ILoveFrogs · 29/04/2013 16:08

My DS has only ever drank milk or water purely because I only drink water so I never have juice in the house. I don't mind him having dilute juice outside the house but he genuinely doesn't like it, we were at a birthday party last month and he was given orange juice but he came up to us asking us for water and didn't touch the orange juice.

I don't have a holier than thou attitude about these sorts of things, he does get a limited amount of crap to eat, we can't leave a supermarket without a bloody kinder egg!

I would refer squash with sugar in btw, I don't mind them having a bit of sugar. My dc think I'm evil because although I allow chocolate I don't really let them have sweets or those crappy lollies, unless they're in party bags. They're just yucky for teeth.

Fruit juice has heaps of sugar in it. Smoothies are even worse - just because it is natural doesn't mean it is healthy.

The problem with something like smoothies is having a lot more fruit sugars than you would have if you were just eating the fruit itself. The fibre in fruit fills you up and so you don't consume as much sugar - eg a smoothie might contain an apple, a pear, a banana and some strawberries- that's a lot of fruit sugar. A toddler would be unlikely to eat all of that in one go, but could easily down 2 or 3 smoothies ina day. That means that they're getting a lot of fruit sugar and that isn't necessarily healthy.

Everything in moderation though - denying kids food rarely works well, especially as they by older so far better for them to get used to having squash/fruit juice/hot choc etc as a treat.

I only buy sweetener-free squash. I am a bit of a zealot about it. They can brush their teeth, but they can't take the chemicals back out of their bodies. I don't buy anything with aspartame or acesulfame K in it, even though they've been certified risk free- I've heard too many bad reports.
Plus sweeteners taste fucking RANK.

Juice is really bad for teeth as are smoothies due to fruit acid

Report
landofsoapandglory · 29/04/2013 16:14

My DC had squash, juice, fizzy drinks (occasionally), milk and water. They both have lovely teeth, no fillings and now at 16 & 18 their drink of choice is water.

I've always gone with everything in moderation.
