to think Primark is the nearest thing to hell?

Always packed with people. Every time I enter it there is always someone having an argument, or shouting something.

I will trip over at least three pushchairs, and have a couple more rammed into my ankles.

It will take forever to squeeze past the vast amount of people in the aisles.

We will get shoved and bumped - never get an apology.

If you want to try something on prepare to lose a good portion of your day, if you decide to buy it you will lose the other portion of your day.

All I wanted was a pair of jeans.

"WreckIt" the building contained workers for other retailers, Matalan used it, it's just that Primark has released condolences first and on their website, whereas BonMarche released a statement when asked. Without reading it, you would think that it is a Primark issue and not a Western retail issue.

I agree about M&S school tights. £9 for 3 pairs and they got holes in the crotch within 3 months. Such a rip off. ASDA tights are better.

You've forgotten that all the clothes are practically on the floor! argh, muddy footprints!!

DialsMavis · 25/04/2013 10:27

If you play with the sliders Primark are pretty shit for environment, politics and sustainability, but on par with Zara, Uniqlo, H&M and monsoon for treatment of people. They are more ethical than River Island, M&S, Benetton and John Lewis and many more on this measure.

I am not excusing or supporting the terrible treatment of people in 3rd world countries, but the vast majority of shops (& consumers) are greedy and selfish. It's very lazy and easy to just not buy from Primark (if you are lucky enough to be able to afford to make that choice) and then think you are so much more informed, caring and right on than those that do shop there.

AmberLeaf · 25/04/2013 11:39

Everyone who has issues with the ethics of the production of clothing/goods overseas for sale in the west, You are still involved in feeding the demand, even if you choose to boycott shops like Primark et al.

Read the link below, its not new news, lots of people are already aware, but I suppose it is easier for you to boycott somewhere like Primark and castigate anyone who doesn't. I think lots of people will openly state they boycott Primark because of ethical reasons, when in truth, they would not have shopped there anyway.

Do you have an ipad, a smartphone, a laptop or an ipod, amongst other things?

How do you justify that? Im sure you have your reasons, well, I have my reasons for justifying shopping in shops like Primark, mainly financial ones tbh.

The story of how the latest technology is made is a story of vast factories. And few factories are as vast as the Longhua Science and Technology Park in Shenzen, China. Estimates put the number of people working at the facility anywhere between 230,000 and 450,000. At that highest estimate, it employs more people than there are in Leeds

The facility is owned by Foxconn, a company whose client list reads like a who?s who of technology ? Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Intel, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nokia, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba to name just a few

Link to full article here

So, are you really so bothered about ethics? or is it only if its a product that you don't want anyway?

Crinkle77 · 25/04/2013 11:41

YANBU. The clothes are rubbish and there is never anything I fancy in there. I bought a coat from there and the buttons fell off after a matter of weeks. Ok it is cheap and I know you get what you pay for but they should not fall off that quickly.

fromparistoberlin · 25/04/2013 12:11

exactly amberleaf

everything we touch ,most days, will have something in it sourced from a "low" ethics manufacturing environment

if you dont like primark, dont shop there

but people with fuck all money do shop there and I think this post is a bit bitchy TBH

thebody · 25/04/2013 13:05

Well I have just brought a lovely maxi dress in primark and my weekly shop in ASDA but then I am working class, don't think I smell though!!

quoteunquote · 25/04/2013 13:31

Just opened this thread to add my thoughts about the 200 dead thinking it must be about that, due to the building collapse, mainly women working for slave wages,

A little bit sad to see that in a conversation about primark hell, given the news, that MNers are unable to be open to extending the debate.

I would hazard a guess that had the OP innocently started a thread, called

to think Clarks is the nearest thing to hell?

on the same day as the clarks factory in somerset had collapses killing 200, due to the owners not closing the building when cracks had appeared, because of the penalties and pressures from the clarks if orders were not produced.

There would be a out cry from MNers asking for the title to be changed, or thread removed.

This thread has a waft of Marie Antoinette about it.

Their skinny jeans are some of the best on the High Street.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2013 14:16

Well said MrsDe. Smile

Has anyone linked to a thread about the factory collapse yet?

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2013 14:19

Here is a thread about the factory collapse should anyone want to comment.

BottledWaterandFags · 25/04/2013 15:24

I actually love Primark.

I really enjoy getting the train (no Primark where I live) and giving over a good three or four hours to rummaging, trying on, browsing, impulse buying.

I usually come home with three or four bags full of all manner of things and I rarely have to spend over £100.

Today, every single item I am wearing (apart from a bracelet and my bra) is from Primark. The whole ensemble cost me about £30.

OneFingerSjupesUpTheYoni · 25/04/2013 15:28

I love asdas, matalan and tescos i'm too poor to be a snob Grin i like good quality at low prices but primark can't provide that - i'm not even all that fussy but i have an odd body shape (tall, loooong body and when not pregnant i'm fat and wobbly like dough Blush ) so it's hard to find half decent clothes at reasonable prices.

My odd body is the reason i live in leggings and dresses/long jumpers it's a pain but i foubt even if i was a normal shape i'd wear most of primark as it's so badly shaped and stitched.

CherylTrole · 25/04/2013 15:56

Excellent point Mrs D can just see the post in Chat " PLEASE help me! I have found something in my home with a Primark label on it. What have I done to deserve this? My DD knows she is not allowed to go there" Haaaaaa

gazzalw · 25/04/2013 15:59

There is a place for Primark in everyone's wardrobes and especially those of savvy teens, who need to make a 'show' with Hollister, Cath Kidston, Jack Wills etc.... whilst having a few understated (read: cheap) essentials from places such as Primark!

allmycats · 25/04/2013 16:05

Not all of their items are crap, some are actually well made and good value, in the same way a lot of 'designer' clothing is poorly made polyester 'emperors new clothes' tat. Where ever you shop you need to look at the finish/cut of the garment and consider the price you are paying.

Some times my local store is hellish and other times, especially midweek in the moring it is quiet. I have never, however , found it be dirty. In fact the polished floor is so highly polished it is like a bloody skating ring.

Ethics on the high street are a whole new thread !

paulapantsdown · 25/04/2013 16:14

I agree with another poster that its the only place I get trousers for my long skinny son, and hes growing out of them, so I'm going to have to go soon.

I went to a branch in Somerset last summer (we had forgot towels for our camping trip), and it was like John Lewis!!!! Clean, tidy, well lit, organised and nice staff - I felt like I was in some sort of parrallel universe after the usual hell of a London Primark!

expatinscotland · 25/04/2013 16:33

I love Primark. And Tesco, Matalan and ASDA. I am a chav.
