to think Primark is the nearest thing to hell?

Always packed with people. Every time I enter it there is always someone having an argument, or shouting something.

I will trip over at least three pushchairs, and have a couple more rammed into my ankles.

It will take forever to squeeze past the vast amount of people in the aisles.

We will get shoved and bumped - never get an apology.

If you want to try something on prepare to lose a good portion of your day, if you decide to buy it you will lose the other portion of your day.

All I wanted was a pair of jeans.

I do sports direct online-much better bargains. Going into the shop is a bit stressful. I'm always worried I will never be able to find my way out again.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2013 07:12

Yes big and they display stuff 10 feet of the ground, then you have to find someone with the hooky thing. Confused If you order online there's always the danger of getting a mahoosive mug. Grin

williaminajetfighter · 25/04/2013 07:13

I hate it. Poor quality clothes on the ground, still smells like a Chinese sweat shop, loads of shoppers going for quantity over quality, customers who are rough and rude. Might as well have a counter for the job centre and social work services at the till.

Grim grim grim.

ithaka · 25/04/2013 07:21

Might as well have a counter for the job centre and social work services at the till.

Surely that is pure snobbery at its worst?

Primark is just another shop. Its long sleeve T shirts are fabulous base layers, lovely and long to tuck in, I live in them over the winter.

Just because an item of clothing is more expensive, it does not follow that the person that made it was paid more - it is usually just a bigger mark up.

usualsuspect · 25/04/2013 07:26

Some people clearly do know what snobbery is.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2013 07:27

I have never noticed it smells. Where do all these snobby people shop?

ParsleyTheLioness · 25/04/2013 07:28

More worried about the recent fire in Bangladesh. Primark workers are clearly working in unsafe as well as dodgy conditions.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2013 07:32

Start a thread then Parsley and link on this one.

PrincessTeacake · 25/04/2013 07:41

You just have to know what you're doing when you shop there, the clothes aren't badly made, they're just made with little to no shaping to save time on sewing them. Never try anything on, round it up to the nearest size up and when you pay, go to the homeware section or shoes and mens because they're never crowded.

From a seamstressing point of view, there's less work in items for primark than, say, Matalan or Monsoon and Primark sells at a deliberate loss to bring in profit through bulk buying. I boycotted primark for a long time but you'd be hard pressed to find a high street label that hasn't outsourced to the third world. At least these days people are more aware of these issues and putting pressure on the companies that use sweatshops.

LottieJenkins · 25/04/2013 07:47

I bought knickers in their recently and wont ever again............every pair fell apart after the first wash! On the other hand i love their jeans and trousers. Wilf loves the huge one at Westwood Cross and i think he almost single-handedly keeps it open!!!! Grin

HappyMummyOfOne · 25/04/2013 07:54

I disagree with the quality being great, had a pair of pjs and two tshirts for a weekend away. All three didnt last more than three washes before there were holes where the seams had come apart. If after cheap clothes than matalan and the supermarkets are far better quality and the shaping is better too.

I buy PJ's/underwear from there, my teens buy clothes and have sets that have washed well for at least a year, so the quality from item to item must vary, if posters have had the experiences that they have. I have found no difference between their clothes and some from other more expensive shops. My eldest DD doesn't always hang things up again, she puts them on a shelf in Primark and H&M, when I challenged her, she said that it ensured people were kept in work, thinking about it, she has a point. Every now and again there are scandals that involve all retailers, Primark had a campaign targeting them and it has worked well.

NuhichNuhaymuh · 25/04/2013 08:15

I don't think people are telling Shelly to shut up about it, but if she wants to draw attention to the ethical debate then to start a new thread zbout it, also that it us not just Primark who get their supplies from Asia, a fact overlooked ignored by many a 'I don't shop in Primark because of the sweatdhops'

Matalan, Monsoon, Benetton, Wall-Mart, are all thought to have suppliers factories in the building. Primark have confirmed the have, the only ones so far I think.

Next time you are in Monsoon take a moment with something with sequins on it and remind yorself that a person in Asia has sewen them on, and don't kid yorself their conditions are better than the Primark workers

NuhichNuhaymuh · 25/04/2013 08:17

sorry for typos fat-fingered and a bit careless

CherylTrole · 25/04/2013 08:51

Yes some things in Primark are naff. Obviously lots of people like to look down their nose at Primark BUT the stores are still going strong through the recession. The stores are full of shoppers. No sign of them going into administration........

Then birdsgottafly with that logic (that leaving clothes around a shop creates jobs) lets leave garbage in the street to make jobs for garbage pickers! Some peoe are unbelievable.

AmberLeaf · 25/04/2013 09:31

From a seamstressing point of view, there's less work in items for primark than, say, Matalan

Yet they use the same suppliers.

fromparistoberlin · 25/04/2013 09:36

do you have poor people OP? I take this thread as a YES to that question

Hmm
Birdsgottafly · 25/04/2013 09:38

"William" leaving rubbish in the street is a health hazard and impacts on society, putting clothes back in a manner that still makes them sell-able, but not quite correctly, is hardly comparable. Primark is a big employer, I'm in Liverpool, we need employment, whilst they need that level of staff, there will be jobs, they are still making a profit, even though their shops are well staffed.

Hmm. I like it. I love their homeware section for the towels and bath mats. I bought dinosaur wall stickers for dd's room a few months ago for just 50p. I got two massive A3 sized packs double sided with stickers of all types of dinosaurs and eggs and mountains. She absolutely loves them and they are really good quality too. I've never been pushed or shoved in our local one. Oxford street is another matter.

happyyonisleepyyoni · 25/04/2013 09:41

For anyone interested in comparing the "ethical" record of different high street shops, this makes interesting reading

www.ethicalconsumer.org/buyersguides/clothing/clothesshops.aspx

Newlook comes top of the charts for high street shops, the mid end stores are in the middle, and the supermarkets and Primark are at the bottom.

I am not a Primark fan anyway but I will be thinking twice about buying supermarket clothes now.
