AIBU?

to absolutely hate/loathe the film Bridesmaids and wonder how anyone could find it "the best film ever"!

I know the film was out ages ago but I watched it on dvd a good few months ago after reading a letter in a magazine where this woman said it was her 7 year old dd's fave film so I thought it might be nice to watch with my dd3 who is 9 but luckily I decided to watch it first - and really hated it - I thought it was such childish humour and pretty revolting and by the time we got to the puppies being given away for free I watched the rest on fast forward thinking it was probably almost over anyway but it wasn't - it went on and on! I haven't watched anything like the American Pie films or any or that kind of humour which I think Bridesmaids is trying to be like but I still cannot understand why so many people have raved about this film and to think it's acceptable to watch with your children - it opens with her having sex for a start! Anyway I thought I had put this behind me until I read on FB a friend's comments about how she has just watched the film again and so many others have left comments agreeing that it's the best film they've seen and so funny - oh the bit on the plane - oh and in the shop with the wedding dresses ..... Confused - I had to come somewhere for a rant!!! (and hope that at least one person can agree with me or if not please EXPLAIN to me the funny parts and how I missed them!!

Hate it.

Not my humour at all ....!

I love the hangover, inbetweeners, American pie, even Rom com's like he's just not that into you... but I just hated bridesmaids. The lead woman in it (don't even know her name it was that memorable) drives me crazy.

Love it, wasn't blown away the first time I watched it but it gets funnier every time I watch it, the plane bit makes me howl.

I can identify with some of it as the scenario between the 2 main women are trying to plan the hen-do/shower was something that happened (on a less dramatic scale) in the lead up to mine. Lots of obvious passive-aggressive behaviour from both parties!

I do have to fast forward the whole bridesmaid dress trying on session, not a fan of gross-out humour!

YANBU - I think exactly the same thing. Utter shite IMO

Too gross for me but there are some funny bits, like the scenes with Don Draper and when the two married bridesmaids bond over the hideousness of their lives on the plane. Also, nice to watch a woman-centred movie, it is so rare.

YADDDDDDNBU......My DP and I watched it to the end but we both thought it was utter rubbish - puerile, juvenile nonsense. However, if you look at the reviews on Amazon they're almost an exact 50/50 split between terrible and brilliant, so I guess it's just not my type of humour.

I thought it was rated 15. So why would a 7 or 9 year old be watching at all?

Report
somewhereaclockisticking · 24/04/2013 15:41

well I think there are some films that are rated maybe a 12 or a 15 and are perfectly acceptable for kids to watch but obviously you have to be very careful - I'm clearly shocked that this woman I read about thought it was acceptable to ket her dd watch it and I didn't allow my dd to watch it because she is only 9. I don't even think my 15 year old would think it amusing but you never know.

Yanbu. It was shit and the bit in the wedding dress shop was just yuck.

I watched this last night and loved it.

I liked it in the same way I liked The Hangover, Knocked Up, and Something About Mary.

I didn't think it was misogynistic, either.

YABU, but only because there are so many films that are equally shite.

Oh god - yes Knocked up - equally crap IMO - in fact Katherine Heigl (or however she spells her name) is in alot of very poor movies. Knocked up - counting how many full frontal scenes in films - humour??????

I think bits are OK, but it could have been a lot better if the central character had resolved her situation by growing up, instead of hitching up. my major beef is that there's a good bit where the butch character comes over and basically says 'OK, move on, I'll be your friend' and says how she has had a bad past, but learnt to accept herself and become successful, on emotional and professional lines. great. but then she is back to bring portrayed like a freak, especially the last scene, where she's eating off that guy. what a waste, it's as though the film makers lost confidence in the situation.
it reminds me a lot of 40 Year Old Virgin, which is half intelligent and interesting, and half adolescent rubbish.
my favorite film of this type is STILL Mean Girls

I don't think a 15 is ever acceptable for a 7 or year old to watch, sorry. A 12A maybe but never a 15.

oh yes, and the two other women (are we to assume they have a lesbian relationship?), the older married woman and the young one are totally wasted.
perhaps I take films to seriously, but in a successful film the characters change. the two competing bridesmaids were 30 year olds that behaved like teenagers , right up to the end.

see the breakdown of her previous relationship and the start of the new relationship plus the jealous feeling the main character has about her friend getting married and having found another best friend are all subjects that could have made for a really interesting film but instead they've gone for gross out humour and as Carlajean says - made the main character a freak. She was completely unlikeable imo so I therefore didn't care what happened to her. The other film (that most of the actors were in) Friends with Kids was better.

You're thinking about it too much!

Love it...worth it for the bridal shop scene alone.

You say that like its a bad thing. Seriously, I love my four hour foreign language films about Romanian orphans bonding with disabled dogs as much as the next woman, but sometimes you just need a few poo jokes Grin.

sorry to hi-jack the thread, but if you want to see a funny film, watch Untouchable. I haven't laughed so much in ages, and the great thing was that you were laughing with the characters and not at them.

I thought it was ok but nothing special. The major problem with it was that every joke was stretched out to the nth degree. The competing speeches scene started off funny but I got bored by the end of it.

I hated the Melissa McCarthy character - oh look she's fat and ugly and loud, let's laugh at her...

It's a certificate 15 so would say its inappropriate for 7 and 9 yos.

I saw this film with a friend at the cinema- we nearly pissed ourselves laughing! I own it on DVD now too. Each to their own. Grin

Definitely not an appropriate film for a 9 year old!

I like the Hangover films, got them on DVD too...
Bridesmaids was funny in parts because of how ridiculous it got, I laughed with my mates at all the bridesmaid-zilla bits where they're trying to outdo each other.

What can i say- I loved it!

However, I must add that I do not think it is "the best film ever"...it just made me laugh. A lot.
