That's it really.

What are your thoughts?

YANBU you sassy lady you! I hung my washing out this morning whilst wearing a red sweatshirt and a blue ikea blanket wrapped around my bottom half a la sarong having just washed my dressing gown - must have looked mental but as it was 7.45am don't think anyone saw Grin

AnyFucker · 24/04/2013 14:33

I wouldn't think you were at risk of attack (how silly...) but I would think you were an exhibitionist

Whether you want to be as "cool" and "right on" in your own garden or not, the fact remains you are in a public place in your underwear (if you are overlooked)

So from that POV, it's up to you of course, but I don't believe it's the "same" as sunbathing in a bikini, for example

I honestly can't see the difference between hanging out washing in underwear and wearing a bikini in your own garden. the underwear probably covers more than a bikini would anyway. If you are comfortable doing it then its nothing to do with anyone else. YANBU

YoniLovesChachi · 24/04/2013 14:59

Hey, look at the op! She goes in the garden in her underwear! Everyone look at her!

You told your colleagues because you wanted them to imagine you in your knickers. Go on, admit it. There was no need to give them a thorough narrative of your morning. Then you wanted to tell more people, and here we are...

livinginwonderland · 24/04/2013 15:02

yanbu, who cares? like you said, your garden, your business. it's no different from sunbathing in a bikini.

AnyFucker · 24/04/2013 15:07

Yes, that "work conversation" looks a trifle steered to me...

We all (women, usually) wear bra and pants, but not all of us have a compulsion to bring it to people's attention

fluffyraggies · 24/04/2013 15:23

If it's confirmation that you want, about the stupidity of the comments re: women putting themselves at risk of attack by their choice of clothing, then you should have phrased your OP differently really. Are you seeking reasurance about that matter OP?

If it really is all about what you can wear in your own garden then IMO you can wear what you like - but must expect to be looked at if you're wearing less than normal.

I sunbathe topless in my garden sometimes. I'm over looked by a few houses. I accept that a few folks might spot me. I decided it didn't bother me.

Bingo.

Ooopsadaisy · 24/04/2013 20:23

Ha! You haven't met my colleagues!

To confirm - I don't care if anyone sees me or not. I was surprised by the reaction from colleagues because I didn't think it was a particularly unusual thing to do. Clearly I was wrong.

Yes - I suppose the conversation does seem "steered". I am paraphrasing how it went because I can't remember exactly what was said but this was the gist of it.

I would think you were the local friendly crazy neighbour. I might even be tempted to take pictures and publish them on Facebook to prove I hadn't imagined it. Grin

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 24/04/2013 20:53

Apostropheuse - I really hope you wouldn't take pictures, however odd you thought some was behaving, that is a serious invasion of personal freedom IMO. If you are just joking, I don't think it is very funny, women are forever having their pictures taken for wearing the 'wrong' thing or dong the 'wrong' thing.

usualsuspect · 24/04/2013 20:56

YANBU it's your garden to do whatever you like in.

raisah · 24/04/2013 21:07

dont be too shocked if some pictures of you half naked hanging out the washing starts to circulate in the internet etc. Do you have dc? Then think of them & the school run and play ground teasing. Stalkers, perverts etc would me off but thHave funats just me.

andubelievedthat · 24/04/2013 21:10

ON a school route? and Q ,Q, of "keen " young boys climbing up /over fence to "cop a look " and>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.mums find out >>>>and then >>>>>>>>>cops at door >>>>>"we wish to talk to you about.... can we come in?"(could madam put some clothes on ?" , then the local paper want to interview you... i am laughing re this , not at what you wish to/do , it"s what may be the "fall out",!good on you !

MadBusLady · 24/04/2013 21:12

I would ALMOST RATHER DIE than do this. I can just about unclench enough to go outside without a cardigan on.

Knock yourself out. You'll get looked at though.

ShadowStorm · 24/04/2013 21:15

It does seem a bit odd to be hanging out washing in your underwear, especially if your garden is overlooked.

And as for no-one should be looking in your garden - I doubt your neighbours are staking it out with a telescope, but they may very well glance out of their window in the direction of your garden and notice you! I also think it's pretty unlikely that a man would vault over the fence into your back garden and attack you just because you were out there in your underwear. That seems like a silly argument to make.

FWIW, I don't think I'd be offended if I spotted a neighbour hanging out washing in their garden wearing only a bra and pants. But I'd definitely be a bit Confused Hmm

Oblomov · 24/04/2013 21:16

If Op was wearing a bikini and sunbathing in her garden and then decided to hang the washing out?
So she's wearing pants and knickers. And the difference between that and a bikini IS, what EXACTLY? Hmm

usualsuspect · 24/04/2013 21:20

I've seen my neighbour sunbathing in her bra loads of times.I've chatted over the fence to her.I'm not shocked nor do I get the urge to take a photo of her. Some weird ideas on MN.

SouthernComforts · 24/04/2013 21:38

flobbadobs just seen where you live on your profile.. definitely the same guy!! Grin small world eh!

Ooopsadaisy · 24/04/2013 21:52

Not on school route.

Can't be seen from street - only surrounding homes.

School run/playground?? DCs are 14 and 17 and they take no crap.

They know I do this (when they're not home) as well as the housework in bra/knicks combo.

"Yeah, that looks like my old Mum, So?????"

The difference between a underwear and a bikini is like the difference between pyjamas and a loose t-shirt and trousers. One isn't suitable for outdoors and one is. I wouldn't go to a shop in pyjamas and I wouldn't go into my back garden in my underwear. I'd be worried about attracting unwanted interest from male neighbours if you have any. Or someone thinking you're an exhibitionist.

I think the only reason for going into your garden in your underwear is that your house is on fire. And here's some Flowers to cover yourself.Grin

Mintyy · 24/04/2013 22:32

Yanbu. You are quite within your rights to wear whatever you like within your own garden. This bears no resemblance whatsoever to popping down to the Co-Op in your pyjamas.
