I remember how to spell broccoli by pretending it is Italian - if you get your doubles wrong they'd pronounce it bruh-COL-lee rather than BROC-colly.

Helps me, anyway.

Occasion on the other hand is a Total Bastard.

I have a number of objections to complimentary medicine. Two of them being that it is neither free, nor prone to telling me how nice I look.

Just don't get me started on complementary treatments Grin

Spelling mistakes definitely annoy me. And yes, 'definitely' is a frequent culprit. Oh and I hate 'should of' and 'try and ... '

But what I just can't get my head round are very professional-looking, very expensive shop signs, with howlers ... If you're going to spend a lot of time and money making a big, professional sign, at least take a couple of seconds to check the spelling ...

My local high street must be the worst in Britian for that. I took photos of 12 examples and I'd only got about a quarter of a way up the street.

My two favourites are the 'Estate Agents - Commercial and Residencial' and the wonderful 'Bearue de Change'

What's wrong with try and Confused

It should be 'try to (plus verb) '. Admittedly 'try and (plus verb)' has become so common that, although grammatical nonsense, it has probably become acceptable. I still find it annoying though. Oh and another one is people pronouncing the letter aitch as though it had an aitch at the beginning of it. That's now so common that even some TV continuity announcers do it.

YANBU Definitely is such a simple word to spell.

I've noticed another of my pet hates on this thread - people not using question marks at the end of a sentence which - well which is a bloody question!

You should hear Glaswegians saying " Def-in- ATE-lee"

No you really shouldn't demented. Nobody should hear that.

Could be worse, demented, he/she could say:

Not at all unreasonable, OP. However, shouldn't it it be asserted thus: 'It fucking is spelled DEFINITELY...' ? Just checking.

akissisnotacontract that's reminded me. I work in a cat neutering clinic (my name might have been a give away) and we get a lot of people coming in to get their cats 'muted' :) (also 'spayded') :)

You belong on the 'sliver' thread Jenny.
I am rubbish at spelling. When small I was kept behind at school and made to write accommodate 100 times. I still can't spell it. Auto correct has kicked in.

thecatneuterer · 20/04/2013 22:24

jenny no we don't seem to have got on to that yet. Also bought vs brought. And I'm sure I've just heard a bbc news reporter say 'the two boys who were bought to the US'. I'm hoping I misheard.

Lol. Don't even get me started on news reporters. Especially when they say 'conshume' instead of 'consume'!!

Pacific/specific is definitely already on this thread. Grin

BBC News 24 is very good for howling grammatical errors. I watch it when I need to be riled up enough for a good deep clean of the bathroom.

Can I offer 'off of' for collective derision while we're here?
