Mind you I always type separate wrong. Writing I spell it correctly but something happens when I type.

Perhaps I am a bit thick an all.

I loved the misspelling in one of Gervais Phinn's books (he used to be a teacher, then a school inspector).

A mum had written a sick note to explain her daughter was ill with 'dire rear' Grin

If spell checkers had one word definitions poor dyslexic sods like me would stand a chance, but they don't.

Apple autocorrect is particularly awful, it frequently suggests the wrong word.

Google search is brilliant, it gets what I mean when apple and word have both given up. DD1 and I suspect it compares what people write and which result they choose and since English is not many web uses first language, it learns to cope with our outrageous guesses.

Grin at 'dire rear', it's technically right Grin

I am so guilty of that one and I piss myself off doing it! Have to spellcheck every single time. It's just a blind spot for me for some reason.

My pet gripe is folk who claim to have been "phased" by something. If that is true, then they have ended up like Captain Kirk following his transporter mishap in The Tholian Web

Somehow, I think they mean "fazed"

Report
ivanapoo · 20/04/2013 12:32

The reason definitely becomes "defiantly" so often is because spell check corrects "definatly" to "defiantly".

I love it when people say they will defiantly come to lunch...

As for definitley, gah so close! I remember learning the basic rule that it's always -ly aged 5.

I also can't bear loose/lose, recipie, reccomend. Let's not even start with your/their.

Someone told me a great acronym to spell dire rear recently. I can only remember the last bit though - useless emoticon.

Yes - when discrete means separate or individual, the T separates the two Es!
