Last interview I got it went well and they seemed interested and said they wanted a second interview and would contact me in the next few days.

2 weeks goes. I call them and they give me some bullshit about the job being on hold but to wait for their email - that never came either.

Finally heard back from another job, when I rang back they apologised and said that the position was now filled.

One job they said they never looked at my cv because there were too many applicants.

I'm sat here crying. I just want a job, I feel so worthless.

It's the economy. Don't take it personally.

No you will! The market is just shitty now because there are so many people chasing jobs and because everything is done on line these days, it's. to like the good old days when a job agency would actually call you with some potential jobs.

It took me ages to find my last job, then the fekkers made me redundant! I did get another one after a few months, so it will happen.

It was probably a crap job anyway! It certainly sounds like a crap way to run a business.

I know ... it's just the run of bad luck that's getting me down.

I don't expect to hear back from all the jobs. I was just devastated when the recruitment agency said that the job had already gone - on the same day.

you can hold your head up high ,at least you are trying , its not your fault some companies cant be arsed to get back to you , unfortunately there are so many people after one job they can afford to be rude and ignore people , keep going though a better one might come along instead then you will be glad you never got those jobs.

I don't believe that all jobs posted actually exist. Sometimes they are just fishing for CVs. It's when they don't even bother to respond when your cv is a really good fit, or don't get back to you after an interview to say that you haven't got the job.

It's a funny old world out there. Even when I went back to work 7 years ago after 5 year break (and I only wanted a fairly brain dead job with a bit of paper shuffling rather than use my qualifications) it took 6 months, then I had a whole run of interviews and got offered a job I didn't really want or was qualified for - and I love it!

I think you just have to keep on plugging away, check over and amend your CV for each application so that you are actually apply to the job spec, rather than sending a generic CV.

Failing that, are you in a position to go temping through an agency? That usually leads on to something more permenant

FWIW my friend is the European head of HR for a huge company and thinks it is despicable that companies don't have the decency to respond one way or another to those who apply. I am in the same boat Cable and am about to head into WEEK 3 of a wait to hear whether I will even get an interview (I rang three days ago and they said they were about to get to shortlist stage - haven't heard so not sure if this means I am unsuccessful or they just still haven't decided yet) It's awful and demoralising.

The last one I went to and didn't get (I assume) was about a year ago. I had to go and do a 'test' (ffs, I have 15 years experience, have run teams and have qualifications falling out of my ears and this was a junior position) and was interviewed by The Board. I thought I was never getting out of that place.

Nope, I never heard back ad whenever I see the place mentioned in an ad or newspaper/magazine I still wonder if there's an empty desk with my name on it (not).

It is really really hard out there at the moment. I was looking to get back to full time work after going part time for a couple of years and it took a year - and this was last year when I think things were a bit better.

All you can do is keep at it and don't take it personally. I know it is hard and frustrating and sometimes upsetting and soul destroying but you need to keep at it.

Advice from me:

Generic / large agencies (for me) were shit. Monster, reed, all of those sorts of things, never even got an acknowledgement let alone an interview or anything. Many of the positions I called up first if i could work out who the company was only to be told the position had been filled and yet was still be advertised as active on websites.
If you have a certain type of experience / specialism / exams for a certain industry etc look for specialist agencies for that industry / role they seem to be better.
Look at large local employers - both public and private sector if you have any around.
Don't be shy - when writing a covering letter or tailoring your CV try and channel amercian-style self-confidence and really sell yourself and your skills. Don't come over all British about it and hide your light under a bushel
Maybe get your CV looked at by someone - there are loads of organisations that will help with this

Agree with not taking it personally, it's just the way things are at the moment. Can you make some speculative applications as well as going through the agency?

It's tough out there at the moment so if you're getting to interview you must be a strong candidate which means it's only a matter of time. A friend went for a job had an interview but they started saying they'd had to suspend the appointment they'll get back to her blah blah blah. So that was that as far as she was concerned. 6 months later they called her to say they were ready for her to start if she was still available. So you never know. Good luck.

It is really really hard getting a job. It's not unusual to have hundreds of applicants for every vacancy. Something will come along its just a long wait

Yanbu to feel like this from time to time, I think applying for jobs is one of the most stressful and soul destroying processes we go through . But make a new start tomorrow /Monday with positive thoughts and you will get there in the end. Previous posters have given great advice , good luck

It is hard out there, I really feel for you. I left the civil service after 6 years to go to uni. After graduating, I was unemployed for 8 months. I must have sent out at least 60 applications and only got about 6 interviews. I know how soul destroying it is. I have been in my current job for 9 months now. You will get there. Good luck

I totally feel for you. I have 16 years experience in my field and have been looking for a job for a year - I am lucky enough to have a job now but I fear redundancy - have applied for over 30 jobs and had 3 interviews. I am trying to console myself with the fact the economy is bad but it doesn't really work. If you want it enough though, something will come up.

what area are you looking for work in? Some areas are notoriously difficult to find work in at the moment

Been on JSA for 7 months, after 5 years as a SAHM, not even had a job interview yet, sucks truly.
