To think 'place marking' is pretty vulgar

Why do people think it is acceptable to shamelessly post on a thread to say nothing more than they are marking their place?

If they are that interested in the topic, surely they can make a comment that is relevant and still marks their place.

rubber-necking was popularised when describing the behaviour of passing motorists when there is a car accident, I think. It's that sort behaviour where someone is going to great lengths to 'see the action'. You know, how the opposite carriage way on a motorway comes to a standstill because motorists slow down to see the accident, then continue to look through their rear mirror as they pass.

TomArchersSausage · 17/04/2013 11:42

Leaving my calling card with the butler on a silver tray in the hall.

There...much less vulgarSmile

ModernToss · 17/04/2013 14:00

Bearbehind, I get the distinct impression you don't know what bookmarking is. It's not adding a biscuit or some dots, it's a facility you can turn on in Settings (as someone explained above) which allows you to save where you are up to in a long thread. Nobody else sees your bookmark.

QOD · 17/04/2013 19:49

Hop that doesn't work for me. It all goes blue and suggests copy

BackforGood · 17/04/2013 19:53

'twas all explained when exactly the same question was asked a month or so ago.
I put a 'Watch' on a thread if it's one I want to keep - maybe advice about University applications, or recomendations for good holiday places, or even a recipe, or tips about car insurance for teenage boys.
I 'mark place' if I catch sight of an interesting thread when I haven't got time to read through 4 pages, but want to be able to find it (in Threads I'm On) later that evening or the next day.
Simples.

starsandunicorns · 17/04/2013 19:56

Whats why I do it Backforgood

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 19:57

moderntoss please don't patronise me- the thread title says 'place marking' and I know exactly what I mean.

I may have incorrectly used the phrase book marking in subsequent posts but I mean place marking

YABU what are you supposed to do on a long or fast moving thread? Either post & be damned if you haven't read the thread or read through (which can take ages) by which time you've missed the discussion.

Very odd to call it vulgar. I don't do it but maybe I will from now on.

Im always amazed by the little things that annoy some people.

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/04/2013 20:04

Marks place.

oOk, I know it's been done already but couldn't resist.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:05

zennudist you do what backforgood suggests.

TiggyD · 17/04/2013 20:07

I think BareBackside is being vulgar when they make all their posts turn green.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:12

What are you talking about Tiggy?

OP posts:
IAmJacksRagingBileDuct · 17/04/2013 20:14

peppa Grin

I can't work out how to bookmark on my phone, if I try to hover it just asks me to copy and paste, I mark my place so I can catch up later on a fast moving or long thread. Would only ever use on chatty topics, and posting keeps the thread bumped in active convos for the OP anyway.

Don't see the problem myself.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:15

For those who think my user name is vulgar, I think that reflects more on your mind's than mine- what is vulgar about the words bear and behind?

OP posts:
TiggyD · 17/04/2013 20:16

All your posts are green on this thread NudieBum. It's separating you from the other people on the thread and implies superiority.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:19

Grow up with the Nudiebum comments tiggie. I had no idea that happened- I have changed my settings so I can see when I post on a thread but I had no idea that others could see it- how does that work?

OP posts:
TiggyD · 17/04/2013 20:20

Of course it's vulgar ArseFlasher! If I changed my name to IvorBiggun people wouldn't assume that I meant my greenhouse would they? Your name is a double entendre so you can't call others vulgar.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:23

ODFO tiggy I think you might find your settings are changed to show all the OP posts on a thread as green.

My name might be a double entrendre but it might be perfectly innocent and there is nothing vulgar about the constituent words.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:27

Just to check though, does everyone else see my posts in green- have I done something totally random to my settings???

OP posts:
LadyBeagleEyes · 17/04/2013 20:28

But it is a double entendre Bear.Confused
Tiggy you're making me Grin

TiggyD · 17/04/2013 20:29

Telling somebody to "Oh Do Fuck Off" might also be considered vulgar. I can't imagine Penelope Keith saying it. No need to be so acronyminous.

EmpressMaud · 17/04/2013 20:29

I don't often do it, but personally find it makes it easier to keep track of via 'threads I'm on' that way, rather than bookmarking or watching.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:33

I can actually completely imagine Penelope Keith saying it!

TBH the green issue is concerning me more now- have I done something wrong with my settings- am I causing a green offence for everyone?

OP posts:
LadyBeagleEyes · 17/04/2013 20:36

Actually you're not green Bear, you're purple.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 20:37

Is that your settings though LBE - I also have thread starters set to purple?
