I've always thought Granny Smiths are really common, whereas Golden Delicious have an air of sophistication and understated glamour.

Discovery are the best of all apples, To be fair they are better from a greengrocer or farmers market than from a supermarket.

I'm liking the new apple varieties. Luckily I know someone in marketing for some of the varieties coming out to help me get my fix.

Egremont russet for me. Braeburn next.

We have a chart of 12 apples with ratings. But we will be expanding our list. You lot are a fount of apple knowledge!

Golden Delish are bleurghh.

I love Egremont Russets, Coxes, and quite like Braeburns and Pink Lady apples. I didn't know that Cripps Pink was the same variety as Pink Lady, that's interesting.

I've got a Katy apple tree in the garden - gorgeous apples. Got a new apple tree last year which hasn't produced any apples yet, called Red Love - we got it for the DDs, apparently the apples are red inside.

Golden Delicious are tasteless poth. Granny Smiths have skins like cow hide. Worcester Permain however are well posh and taste like strawberries. Beat that!

Sour apples good for cooking.
Crunchy apples for eating
Red Delicious apples-and Macintosh apples are my favorite for eating, Granny Smith and Macs, for baking pies.
I haven't tried a lot of other varieties!

Golden delicious is the Davina McCall of apples. Overhyped, oversold, tasteless, watery and blah.
Red delicious fares worse than its golden cousin. That's the Claudia Winkleman. Just urgh.
Now pink ladies are the fashionable Holly Willoboobys and granny smiths are 'always fresh and crunchy but not terribly trendy' Nigella Lawson.

The winners are the homegrown, English varieties ie the Kate Middletons, coxes, braeburns etc etc

Great thread. I have room for two apple trees. My choices are from: Anna, Dorset Gold, Gala, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Lady Williams, Pink Lady, Pinkabelle, Red Fuji/Naga and Sundowner. Have decided to go with Granny Smith and Sundowner. Yee ha.

ha ha ha that "foreign muck" is now offensive. It's like using the phrase Johnny Foreigner. It's channelling the Daily Mail, Nigel Farage, Alf Garnett. Nobody on MN would use that phrase straight. The very idea is hilarious.

BTW just came back from a lunch where a French person referred to our horrible English food so no need to worry about their feelings too much.
