I've always thought Granny Smiths are really common, whereas Golden Delicious have an air of sophistication and understated glamour.

Golden delicious are a bit 70s surely

I like my apples to be bang on trend

I always think Jazz apples sound a bit rude.

Golden Delicious (at least from a supermarket) are bizarrely neither delicious nor especially golden. A disappointing fruit experience.

They're both horrible! Golden Delicious (delicious?!) have squashy skins and a cotton-wool inside, and no "bite". Granny Smiths are too uniform, boring-textured and acidic without the sweetness to counteract it.

Give me a nice Cox, Russet, Braeburn or Laxton any day.

er, yeah. both mass produced. both tasteless.

have you tried heritage varieties? many are available in supermarkets.

there is no such thing as posh when it comes to food. its good or its not.

YABU.

Thanks for the biscuit upthechimney, but I'm an apple type. Posh GD

But this isn't an ordinary biscuit, it's a MN biscuit. With added vipers and a sprinkling of outrage.

frisson you beat me to it, any apple with Superb in its name is clearly tip-top. My favourite is definitely Discovery - they're so fragrant and have that lovely crisp, and the contrast between the white flesh and the pink just below the skin...
We have Blenheim orange and Spartan growing in the garden, spartan always seemed like an old man's apple as it's what my dad likes best, but fresh off the tree they are quite splendid.

Anyone else tried Fuji?

Golden Delicious go great with white Cheshire cheese. Or at least they did, the skins are a bit tough and the flavour a bit mild nowadays, oh, and you can't always get delicious, creamy, white Cheshire cheese either.

I miss cox's orange pippins and bramley's. Don't get either here.

I like Honeycrisp, IMO the best of the ones we get here.

Raymond Blanc recommends GD for making apple tarts with. The fool

That's because he's French and therefore delusional re food. The French really have no idea that there are non-French food items in the world and some of them are better than French food items. They really need to stand back when it comes to apples, puddings and breakfasts.

Another nice apple I can throw into the apple chat is Rubinette. You can buy them easily in Switzerland, less so here, but they are v good.

So glad to see other Discovery fans out there!

If anyone is looking for these you'll need to keep an eye out in August, they are the first British apple ready, but they don't store well and there's a 4(ish) week window to eat as many as possible. I've tried to freeze them but they lose their unique flavour Sad.

Love the comparison to husbands and brothers. Love my DH but find his brother repugnant! thank goodness he emigrated

I like small Gala apples, have to be grown in Britain though.

My Dad has a small apple tree that grows delicious Coxes in September.

I'm going to throw a lovely James Grieve into the mix.

What I want from an apple is a firm, crisp texture, no woolliness inside, juiciness, and a sharp-sweet proper apple taste, if you know what I mean.

I will keep an eye open for heritage apples - sadly our local tesco doesn't seem to have them (I haven't seen them, anyway) - but we do have one of they posh Wholefoods supermarkets up in Glasgow - they should sell the best and poshest apples, shouldn't they?

As a sixth-former, back in the 70s, my lunch of choice was:

A Golden Delicious
Salt & Vinegar Crisps (Golden Wonder, natch)
Mars bar

Eaten in that order, food of the Gods.

Oooh yes to James Grieve - lovely, lovely apples.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/04/2013 11:51

That has reminded me - I planted a James Grieve apple tree in my back garden, and I think it even had an apple on it, the first year - but my labrador dug the tree up and shredded it. She did the same with the coxes tree I had too.

Golden delicious are disgusting, taste of plasticine and are of the 1970s.

Real English apples that taste of something, like coxes, are nice.

Granny Smiths used to be lovely and sharp but the supermarket ones now are bland and covered in wax.

Golden delicious. are watery and "common"
Granny Smiths are sharp and somehow an old fashioned apple.

Braeburn or Pink lady for me.

Never understood the pink lady obsession. They always taste a bit cotton woolly to me
