I've always thought Granny Smiths are really common, whereas Golden Delicious have an air of sophistication and understated glamour.

Egremont - it doesn't look like much on the outside, but TRUST US.

Golden Delicious is the apple of the 1970s. What you might have after a spam fritter and some butterscotch Angel Delight.

Gala for me any day, they are crisp and sweet and totally yum. I keep them in the fridge and they are one of my favourite snacks.

I grew up with golden delicious apples as the only apple choice in our house and yes i agree they are weak, watery and tasteless - what was my DM thinking.

DH and i also love a pink lady but they have got rather pricey of late and frankly just too big for an apple snack unless you share one.

Of course the only decent apples are the ones off the tree in the garden that was planted a hundred years ago by some horny handed son of the soil, back when this cottage actually had farm labourers living in it.

Are Golden Delicious those horrible mealy apples with the texture of mashed potatoes?

Report
gabsid · 15/04/2013 18:38

What? Grin Is this something that really concerns you? It might be embarassing I someone caught you eating a Granny Smith? Is it so you can be seen eating the 'right' apple Grin

To me it was always a matter of taste Confused, but I might be sending out all the wrong messages Shock!

I like Gala or Braeburn - what does that say about me?

I haven't had a Granny Smith or a Golden not Delicious in years. There's usually something with a good flavour around, probably British. Braeburn or Cox usually grace our fruit bowl (for 10 mins until the kids eat them).

My favorite apple by far is the Discovery, available for a few weeks over summer. The best ones have pink marbelling throught the flesh and are just amazing flavoured. Egremont Russets are a close second.

If a Golden Delicious apple was the first apple you ever ate, you would never eat another apple again.

Yellow, horrid skin, pappy, watery and over-sweet.

In short: shit.

Sorry, all of you who hate Golden Delicious but love Pink Lady, Braeburn, Gala, etc - they're actually all basically Golden Delicious. They were all developed in Australia in the 70s and 80s as mass produced spin-offs of the golden delicious - a hybrid.

I'll take my new found apple knowledge and butt out now.

XBenedict · 15/04/2013 18:49

That maybe true but they taste completely different and have a totally different texture.

I TOTALLY agree with Yoni in the first post. Eating a Golden Delicious is like sucking on mildly apple flavoured cotton wool.

On the other hand, Granny Smiths are a bit in your face. They have no finesse. They are too thick skinned and brassy, like a fake tanned tart. What you need is a Braeburn. That's a proper apple. Classy but gutsy.

Like me. Grin

I don't care if GD and Braeburn are related. I fancy my husband but I don't fancy his brother.
