Gala for me any day, they are crisp and sweet and totally yum. I keep them in the fridge and they are one of my favourite snacks.

I grew up with golden delicious apples as the only apple choice in our house and yes i agree they are weak, watery and tasteless - what was my DM thinking.

DH and i also love a pink lady but they have got rather pricey of late and frankly just too big for an apple snack unless you share one.

I haven't had a Granny Smith or a Golden not Delicious in years. There's usually something with a good flavour around, probably British. Braeburn or Cox usually grace our fruit bowl (for 10 mins until the kids eat them).

My favorite apple by far is the Discovery, available for a few weeks over summer. The best ones have pink marbelling throught the flesh and are just amazing flavoured. Egremont Russets are a close second.

Sorry, all of you who hate Golden Delicious but love Pink Lady, Braeburn, Gala, etc - they're actually all basically Golden Delicious. They were all developed in Australia in the 70s and 80s as mass produced spin-offs of the golden delicious - a hybrid.

I'll take my new found apple knowledge and butt out now.

I TOTALLY agree with Yoni in the first post. Eating a Golden Delicious is like sucking on mildly apple flavoured cotton wool.

On the other hand, Granny Smiths are a bit in your face. They have no finesse. They are too thick skinned and brassy, like a fake tanned tart. What you need is a Braeburn. That's a proper apple. Classy but gutsy.
