To worry about looking ridiculous when I start running?

Molehillmountain · 13/04/2013 12:35

I have done no very little exercise since I had the dc-a few periods where I've swum once a week but generally not. I am not huge, but a size 16 and not exactly small breasted.

I've decided that I'm going to start the couch to 5k thing I saw on Nhs choices and I was all fired up and ready to get on with it until I started thinking of getting running shoes and sports bra. Then it hit me that I would look just ridiculous and awful running and that the folks in the sports shop would think I was too.
I'm still going to do it, i would look sillier staying big and more importantly unfit andI want to set an example to the dc, but Aibu to think I will look silly for a while, and how long that while will be?

View-sorry you've been poorly. Well done for going out - nicer when the weathers kind. Mogglemoo - sorry you are poorly. Get well soon. This Brew is honey and lemon.
My challenge today is to get out for a run after a rather nice but alcoholic night last night! Oops! Forgot my body is now a temple and had rather a lot of very nice food and wine. Blush. Will watch marathon to inspire me although I doubt any of them will be nursing a hangover!

mogglemoo · 21/04/2013 07:29

I used to watch the marathon and kid that I would run it next year!

This year, I'm a runner- it could actually be me next year Grin

Mole, the run may be hard, I found W2 harder than W3/4, but the run will help the the toxins out your body, and if you can run having indulged last night, then you can run anytime (and you'll feel even more virtuous afterwards).

I'm quite jealous actually.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 21/04/2013 08:57

W1r3 will be taking off * shortly. Reading this thread again for motivation. And posting as a virtual self- kick up the arse. Should have gone yesterday. Am disappointed in myself that I am slacking already before even finishing week one.

  • taking off = plodding along so slowly that normal human being can keep up by walking along side me.

I'll be back soon with a face like this Angry

Week one completed. Easier today than last time - probably due to less windy. Though sure it's windy in both directions around here'

Reward for completing week one : new headphones and / or arm holder thingamy for my phone. Any recommendations?

Molehillmountain · 21/04/2013 09:55

Well done Smile It's not-any chance it could be easier because you're getting fitter?! I thought we did a slower pace for run on Thursday because we were chatting and then I thought that actually, I'd done it twice and perhaps I should give myself some credit!
My phone holding thing for my arm is coming any day so I could tell you about it then. Headphones-I'm a simple soul and I use the iPhone ones.

Week two, run one complete! Hard work and the first one where I've walked straight back into a houseful of awake children needing mummy. But I did it Smile

Well done mole
Just completed w2 r3 and feeling you hot on my heels. Am starting to feel a difference now in the thigh wobblage so onwards and upwards to week 3

Molehillmountain · 21/04/2013 16:12

Hot and pretty shattered on your heels, Demented! Hoping to get similar results with my wobbles. Grin

I've never been chased by a mole before.....although have been overtaken by a snail in my time Grin

drfayray · 22/04/2013 15:50

What a great thread! I went for a run again tonight - did almost the whole 4 km. My dog was pleased; she likes to trot Grin
I am aiming to run the whole distance ( I have a specific route) and then pick up my speed. I like to challenge myself.

I feel so powerful when I run!

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 22/04/2013 19:41

W2r1. Done. Joio! Reeeeally must get better earphones though. I missed a 'walk now' instruction. Ooooof! Great weather for running - cool, not quite drizzle, light wind.

Still enthusiastic! How you all doing?

dementedma · 22/04/2013 20:27

W3r1 and a bit downhearted. Can't believe I could run 30 minutes last year and I'm struggling with a 3 minute run this week!I KNOW this programme works, I've done it before but finding it hard to find my self belief at the moment

Molehillmountain · 22/04/2013 22:23

Keep going demented and you'll be at the 30 min run stage again. I'd say sooner than you know but of course with the plan you do pretty much know. I have that little voice in my head that tries to destroy good stuff I do by saying it isn't as good as other people or how I was, or if I'd started sooner it'd be better. Don't let yours get you. I'm sending mine packing.

KristinaM · 22/04/2013 23:36

That little voice in your head that says you can't do it is lying

80 year olds run marathons

Ordinary people just like you run when they are recovering from heart surgery or cancer or a stroke. You can do it, just build up gradually .

mogglemoo · 23/04/2013 10:28

W4 done- but by far the hardest run I have had so far. I know I've not been well (still spluttering) and it's been nearly I week since I was last out; God, that nearly finished me!

I did it though... Felt like Wallace in 'The Wrong Trousers' when he has someone working the trousers by remote control and making him walk-it certainly wasn't me controlling my legs!

W5 beckons... GULP....

Ladies: you are all doing fabulously. We are doing more exercise than lots of people and actively encouraging each other here in an extremely supportive fashion. I'm not sure if I would have gone out today if I hadn't mentioned it here. While REALLY toiling with the last 5 mins the thing that kept me going was that I wasn't coming back here to admit failure.

Am really going to need you next week (allegedly, by W5R3 you run for 20 mins straight-with NO WALKING)

So, Flowers to you all.

X

Molehillmountain · 23/04/2013 10:40

Flowers to you too! W2 R2 done in lovely sunshine. Accidentally fast forwarded and not sure if I did an extra 90 second run by mistake! Anyway-felt tough but carried on!

I second pretty much everything mogglemoo says-except the week 5 next week bit - gulp indeed. I imagine I'd still be thinking about it if it weren't for the surge of encouraging comments that first weekend and the ongoing support from the runners and extra comments.

Hooray for our little group Grin We can do it! And we actually are!

Molehillmountain · 23/04/2013 10:41

Ooh and an individual well done to you mogglemoo! After a weeks break too!

OP posts:
KristinaM · 23/04/2013 19:18

Well done !

I know that feeling of not wanting to admit defeat ;-)

goingupinfumes · 23/04/2013 21:04

I run like a granny, I look like I'm just walking quickly really, but I enjoy it, I love my time listening to music and I realised I could run like a granny for miles and miles, so I did the Great South Run - Took me blumming ages but I did it.

What might help is to enter a 1k, 2K or 5K run and then you can see the massive difference in running, shapes, sizes, ages of people who run, you will feel part of a pack and maybe gain confidence when you are out on your own. Once you start running you sort of join a group or runners, and to meet up and see others really helps you realise you are part of a big global team of people who run..

dementedma · 24/04/2013 20:09

No run tonight as not feeling well and won't get out now till Saturday. Stuck on W3 r1

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 24/04/2013 22:15

Well done moglemoo for digging deep. I find myself mentally composing a this-is-how-my-run-went post around the halfway mark. So it feels very much like you are all with me :)

Hope you feel better soon dementedma.

W2R2 done. Dusted. Felt great. Love this weather for running - cool, misty and damp but not wet. Am dreading summer and hotter weather.

Keep up the good work runners!

mogglemoo · 25/04/2013 06:07

Just putting here that I will be going out this morning, so I can't wuss out...

Demented- frustrating, I know but running when feeling grotty makes things much harder, meaning you may get dejected. Better to take a few days off, be nice to yourself and run when you feel better. I bet you'll just pick up where you left off. Wink

Report to follow....

mogglemoo · 25/04/2013 06:09

Unusual- I like that! May try that this morning; so I will be composing that report between 9am and 9.30am! I also promise myself a treat when I get home- today it's last nights episode of Grey's Anatomy.

mogglemoo · 25/04/2013 10:09

W5R1 done and, if I'm honest, was by far the easiest run I've done so far!

Even by the last 5 min run I managed to run faster in the last 60 seconds and it was up a 'hill'.

Was nervous starting W5, but now looking forward to R2 and then the 20 min run- bring it on.....

Molehillmountain · 25/04/2013 19:21

Evening runners! Been AWOL for a couple of days, but about to do week 2 run three so will post later. Well done for all the street/field pounding!
