To worry about looking ridiculous when I start running?

Molehillmountain · 13/04/2013 12:35

I have done no very little exercise since I had the dc-a few periods where I've swum once a week but generally not. I am not huge, but a size 16 and not exactly small breasted.

I've decided that I'm going to start the couch to 5k thing I saw on Nhs choices and I was all fired up and ready to get on with it until I started thinking of getting running shoes and sports bra. Then it hit me that I would look just ridiculous and awful running and that the folks in the sports shop would think I was too.
I'm still going to do it, i would look sillier staying big and more importantly unfit andI want to set an example to the dc, but Aibu to think I will look silly for a while, and how long that while will be?

Ooh-first "to run or not to run" dilemma! Supposed to go tonight but have come down with sore throaty sniffy head full of grot cold. Not bed bound and doing okay but are you supposed to run through this kind of thing or rest up? Can't quite believe I am asking-the Pre C25K Mole would have seen it as an immediate get out of jail free card Wink

It's ok to run as long as the bug is just in your head . If its in your chest then you should rest. Assuming you are not running a temp etc, just sniffles .

If it were me I woudl take a couple of paracetamol and go a brisk walk. If you manage to jog a little you will be delighted.

Usual caveats -I am not a doctor etc etc, see one if you are worried etc etc

Runners world article on this here

www.runnersworld.com/health/should-you-run-when-youre-sick?page=single

If you google this you will see there's no clear advice . But given that you are taking about a 20 mins jog /walk session and not a marathon ( unless I've missed some thing ) , you should be fine :-)

Molehillmountain · 10/05/2013 18:29

Ah-no excuse then!

Did you go out mole?

Molehillmountain · 10/05/2013 19:11

Not yet-need dc to be in bed. But it's absolutely chucking it down and my nose is completely blocked. There's dedication and there's foolishness. I might skip it tonight.

I felt pretty rubbish about how i looked after pregnancy. im not a very vain person and was really surprised how much i beat myself up but i just didnt recognise myself and when you are constantly tired and hormonal i guess you are more likely to focus on something. any way i just wanted to say running has been absolutely amazing for my confidence. i did a few things that helped get me started:

  1. i made a date to run with an equally unconfident/ unfit friend every week. At first we walked more than we ran but now I love it.

  2. I bought a cheap treadmill and ran on it every day for 30mins when my Baby was asleep. Some days I literally walk but I just make sure I press the start button and find motivation along the way. I love my treadmill!

  3. I signed up for a 10k race and got all my friends to sponsor me. its much further than Ive ever ran before but the prospect of failure is keeping me going.....wish me luck! I'm running the heroes run in Brighton on the 19th may..eek just hoping not to get injured before hand.

VIVALINA · 11/05/2013 22:06

Sorry the link to my treadmill didn't seem to work but just thought I'd leave this recommendation too www.jtxfitness.com/treadmills/jtx-motorised-folding-sprint3

VIVALINA · 11/05/2013 22:07

Ps I went running with a cold and it made me feel really rotten. I really don't recommend it at all!

wizzler · 11/05/2013 22:20

molehill, I have just started c25k. Did run 2 of wk 1tonight. Just give it a go! I have been on the c25k thread and everyone is really supportive, and their stories give me hope for week 2 and beyond!

wizzler · 11/05/2013 22:22

Sorry should have read whole thread!

Molehillmountain · 12/05/2013 16:14

It's a bit of a read, wizzler! Well done - its a great feeling, isn't it? Vivalina-sorry you felt rotten running with your cold, but thanks for having me permission not to. I'm going to see how I feel when dc are in bed. At the moment I'm one run behind and I'm a bit worried about not going tonight as it'll be four days since my last run. No way could I have gone weds-just felt rotten.

To add my twopenn'orth about sports bras, I love the Freya underwired ones. I am a 36F and they are comfy and I don't feel as if I wobble about all over the place. Not my boobs, anyway.

KristinaM · 13/05/2013 14:43

How are feeling now mole?

And have the rest of you been out running this weekend?

I did my second ever 10k yesterday ( in the cold and rain ) and made my target time so I was well pleased. So I'm having a day off today :-)

NamelessMcNally · 14/05/2013 12:15

Well done Kristina! What time are you targeting? I do my first in 10 days (started running in March). Feel prepped and just to do it now!

KristinaM · 14/05/2013 17:23

Thank you! My target was sub 50, which is ok for an old dear like me Wink

NamelessMcNally · 15/05/2013 12:18

Just Wow. Don't think I would ever get sub 50 for 10k... If I get under an hour I'll be very, very happy.

NamelessMcNally · 20/05/2013 20:54

How are you going Moley?
