AIBU?

To worry about looking ridiculous when I start running?

I have done no very little exercise since I had the dc-a few periods where I've swum once a week but generally not. I am not huge, but a size 16 and not exactly small breasted.
I've decided that I'm going to start the couch to 5k thing I saw on Nhs choices and I was all fired up and ready to get on with it until I started thinking of getting running shoes and sports bra. Then it hit me that I would look just ridiculous and awful running and that the folks in the sports shop would think I was too.
I'm still going to do it, i would look sillier staying big and more importantly unfit andI want to set an example to the dc, but Aibu to think I will look silly for a while, and how long that while will be?

Great read here still especially when you find that others are getting out and moving on through the schedule.
I don't need to worry about whether I look ridiculous because I know I do! Today I ran the w6r2 and went out around midday as I was watching the weather to try to miss the hail showers. It is blowy here too so I went out adding a woolly hat to my get up. Did the run, not too bad either and came across a couple out walking as I was getting back. I smiled and nodded as I passed them, they gave me a pitying smile which I thought was because my dog was filthy. Got back to the car and saw in the mirror that the hat had ridden up giving me the pointy head look! Oh well......should be more worried about Roy Ning for 25 mins without a walk break as that's next. In fact no more walk breaks at all, gulp.

Who is Roy Ning? I meant running

I think that what you thought was a pitying smile was an embarrassed smile because you were running and they were just walking . Especially if they were younger than you Wink

Week 4 starts tomorrow. Legs sore after yesterdays 7.5 minutes so will be sticking to the programme and not trying to add in any extra bits!

I just did Week One Day One after posting up thread about a fortnight ago Blush

It was ok, 60 seconds is a lot shorter than I thought it would be! But I do need to repeat it before I move on to the next one, because I did cheat at one point. I took the dog out with me and she is evidently unused to me running, because as soon as I started, she got very confused and just stopped dead in front of me.

I face planted in to the dirt BlushBlush

So I missed the first two 'run' sections completely, while debating whether or not to give up and go home!

Well, second run of week three done. Tried to be a bit clever and run faster on the last run and by the end was willing, nay begging Laura to say slow down and walk! But I did it - yay! Well done all!

Keep going Mole. I always try to ramp up my speed in the last bit of my run. Went out a few weeks ago with DH who is a proper runner and he got left in my dust in the last few 100 yards when I started to run like a crazy woman!

Oh wow! Well done Molehillmountain

Well, you have inspired me too! Just downloaded the C25K and start tonight. When it's dark! And it will be cooler (Brisbane also).

I was in a sport shop here about a month ago that is popular called Lorna Jane trying to find a decent bra (34D) and it was awful! The super-toned-gym-outfit-wearing-glamorous assistant was actually trying to squish my puppies into this bra which would have been useless - no support. I got the giggles - she must have thought I was a loon. Blush So I'm going to look online at the Shock Absorber too - and wearing two is a great idea.
I'm not massive - 12/14, but much bigger than is right for me/I'm happy with. I'm only 5ft 5.

Thank you for this thread - you've really given me the boost I needed!!!!!

Also, it seems EVERYBODY in Brisbane is a runner, goes to the gym, does SOME form of exercise, so it's no big deal here like it is back home in the UK. You will love Newfarm!!!!! Brilliant park - if you have children, there is a gorgeous kid's park all encased in these massive trees. It's really cool! I was there a couple of months ago and was very jealous of the children getting to play there! Grin

Net curtains -I'm F or g cup and I find the shock absorber run bra gives me very good support. I think you would have to be much larger to need 2 at once . It's much better that the normal shock absorber bra.

I've heard good things about the enell bra too but have never tried it

Good bra and shoes essential

Ooh-week 4 run 1 was a toughie! Had to remind myself that I've done tougher things that were more painful and lasted longer (not least three labours!) but I did want to stop at one point. I didn't though! Hooray! Sixteen whole minutes of running, albeit broken into (just) manageable chunks Smile

It's very quiet here, have you girls been out running over the weekend?

I survived!

Good to hear that all are progressing well and that we are encouraging others to try C25k.

Mole- well done. W4 is hard, but well worth it.

Today I did W6R1. I managed to do W5R3 (the biggie 20min one!) last Tuesday. I felt really nervous, like going for a job interview, and had convinced myself that I wouldn't be able to do it. My husband has made me six different playlists to listen to. I checked them out and picked one.

I thought it was six songs long with DelAmitri and Scissor Sisters at the end. So I ran, song four finished and I was feeling OK and readjusted my route for the last two songs (about another 8mins). But I'd made a mistake- there was no DelAmitri and the Scissor Sisters came on I nearly wept with joy. I speeded up!!!

Finished the 20 minuted and it was the BESTEST feeling ever- so proud of myself!!

Keep going, ladies- JFDI......

good luck Molehill.

am another person you've inspired to do this too, thank you so much! also have big boobs+size 16 + am extremely self-conscious about doing it cos not exercised properly for aaaages, am so unfit. the tips from other runners and links on here are v.helpful.

already have the kit, (running shoes from shop where the staff advise you and a shock-absorber bra). Got them last year when I joined a group that run around the park on sat mornings but have since moved house so my good intentions stuff is gathering dust (but no longer) Grin

So-I did a bit of a hill today! Another stint where I was willing Laura to say walk (I may have begged her out loud Blush. Run ended at shop to buy chocolate for me dh! But only a little bit and I had to do more walking than strictly necessary to get home!

Nice one PhoebeC, I agree and have also confronted a few yobs and various white van men about shouting stuff - I once caught a man in a van up at a roundabout and shouted at him through his open window how he would feel if people shouted stuff at his wife/ daughter etc - very satisfying to see him look so crest fallen but got told off by friends later who said it was dangerous, oops Confused

Anyway OP I think everyone feels stupid to start with, and it can take a while to go, but stick with it. Even some really excellent runners I know look a bit daft with their running styles - think Paula Radcliffe with her nodding head! - but they don't care as they are the ones feeling fitter, happier, more confident etc, so go for it.

As for bras - pricey but get an Under Armour one if you can - amazing!
