To wonder why I was not immunized against mumps in the 80 s?

That is it really......I now find that I need to have it for visa purposes and as I am breast feeding I cannot have it.
How come they started doing it with the mmr but anyone before that will not have had it? seems inconsistent. Either it is good for us all to be immunized or there is no need surely?

Apparently there wasn't a licensed mumps vaccine available prior to MMR, so measles and rubella were given separately.

Thanks....so us 70 s kids all have not had it? What a pain......I guess I have to wait to get the mmr even though I have the m and the r bit done.
Don't want to stop breastfeeding to get some sodding vaccine to tick the box ..now that is an unreasonable proposition.

Ah - but if you were born before 1982, like we were, you probably developed natural immunity because you were exposed to the virus in the community. It's people born after 1982 and before 1988 that really need the vaccine. I think, anyway - someone will correct me if I'm wrong, no doubt.

It's annoying to be in the position you are, though.

I was born in 1970 and didn't get mumps vaccine, (until I was offered mmr in a catch up in 1994 when I started teaching) but I did get mumps it was probably my worst childhood illness.

You could ask your GP to get your blood tested for mumps antibodies to prove you are (or not) immune.

Are they really sure you can't have it while breastfeeding. I'd check with the drugs in breastfeeding helpline first www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-in-breastmilk.html they will be able to give you the best advice.

I'm don't know if I've had it or not born in the 70's and only remember having chicken pox as child.

I know I didn't get the vaccine (born in 1980) and I've never had the disease either. I remember my friend from school was quite ill with it.

I was born in 1982 so didn't have the vaccination as a baby but there was a catch up program when I was a teen and I had the mmr then. Would you not have had that?

Born in 78 and believe I only got one shot on the go at the time due to early head injury and brother's severe asthma/allergies.

I was born in the UK in 1985 and didn't get mumps vaccination (until I realised and had MMR recently).

My older brother had the mumps in about 1989, so I probably some immunity, but thought why risk it.

So I share your annoyance. Had to pay for my MMR too, because not in the UK anymore. The doctor was pretty horrified that I hadn't had it!

I was born in 1984 and had my MMR but I was at primary school when it was done so they must have done some sort of catch up program?

I had mumps and either German measles, proper measles or both. mum can't rememberHmm

didn't even realise there were vaccinations for them in the 80s.

had chicken pox too. truly, I am a child of the 80s.

i think they did do a catch up, but some fell through the net. we were all happy at my primary school that the kids at the other school had to get an injection (i assume mmr) and we didn't (!)

I was born in 78 and had mumps, it was hideous, I agree that it was the worst of my childhood illnesses. My dad got me a curly wurly to cheer me up and I was violently sick on it. Couldn't look at a curly wurly for years after that.

I was born in 1979 and had mumps and german measles as a child. I remember loads of people having mumps Shock (and a couple with whooping cough).

I was the last year to have the individual jabs (though I didn't have the rubella one) in yr 8 or 9 I think.

My sisters 83 and 88 both had the MMR.

MMR came in 1988. DS1 was born 1986 so he didn't have it, just measles single jab. He caught mumps in 1989 but wasn't terribly ill with it. He did pass it on to his CM however and she couldn't work for 3 weeks as a result Shock.

He had a rubella jab at secondary school later.

DS2 born 1992 had MMR but chicken pox not available at that stage so he caught that aged 2.

I was born in 1974 and had mumps at 10, which wasn't much fun. I know someone born in 1986 and had it last year - she was proper poorly, far worse than I remember being. I don't know if it's the general case that it hits adults worse. Nasty implications for adult men, too Hmm

I wasn't vaccinated either as a child, born 1975. Apparently there was some scare at the time. I didn't even find this out till a few years ago so i tripped through life and travelling through Third world countries completely unprotected. Thanks mum for keeping me updated. Needless to say my DD has all her jabs no question.

I was born in 1981, didn't have a mumps immunisation, had mumps, was seriously ill, though looked like bloody Alvin from the chipmunks!
