Locating the stopcock

Hi, after reading a recent thread it has got me thinking. Does everybody know where their stopcock is? Obviously it concerns me that in an emergency I won't be able to switch of the water.

The previous owners adapted the downstairs and put in a new kitchen - so I cannot ask neighbours about their layout.

In this situation should I be cutting holes in the back of the kitchen cupboards?

Has anyone else had to tear apart the house to find the stopcock?

When you find your stopcock or stopcocks you should check they are easy to use and that they work.

Sorry if I am stating the bleedin' obvious.

I could always call someone who might know.

I'm amazed that people don't ask when buying the house!! (and more amazed that landlords don't walk their tenants through these details, leave instructions, stick on big labels).

Yup, I've moved house almost a dozen times in half as many years so I've got a geeky moving house checklist with all the silly things you forget you need to know when moving in.

I was a silly new owner who never thought that the stopcock would be hidden- very naive.

It pays to turn them on and off on a regular basis off as when our kitchen tap broke and could, nt turn off we tried to stop water by turning off at stopcock but that would, nt turn off due to limescale :(
Tap out in street turns off water to 4 houses not just ours .....how we laughed
