OK..Here goes..should I have let him in ??

Sorry ..thread title is not as exciting as what it really is !...but my Mum has really upset (and worried me) on her opinion on this ....

Last week I said goodbye to my son at the door as he went to school at 7.30am..

I am still in pj's and early morning mess and go into kitchen to put kettle on for another dose of caffine ...door knocks....I opened the door (without checking) expecting ds to be there ....I even had my silly face on ready to say "what have you forgotten ".....

No ..it was a meter reading man showing his badge ...but without my glasses on it was a blur..

I said I would get them ...closed the door and then came back and gave him the numbers(quickly grabbing a cardigan)....I gave them (through the security chain)!

My mum said I was very "rude" not to have let the poor man in and to close the door on him was awful Confused

What would you have done at that time in the morning ...?

At 7:30 I would be very suspicious and wouldn't have let him in

I'd have let him in to do his job. I'm sure he's seen a million people in PJs.

I never let meter readers in! My cupboard is full of stuff, it's a total pain!

YANBU. I think it was good of you to go to the trouble of writing down the figures for him. A meter reading man came here last week, in the afternoon. It was just a bad time for him to come in, for various reasons, so I asked him to please come back another time. He said, "Well that's fine, I'll let them know that I was refused entry." Left me worrying that I might be penalised in some way!

I'd have let him in. I've never known a metre reader man (no idea of actual job title) to let you take the reading yourself.

Although if he meant any harm he'd probably have forced entry anyway.

Emily...She thinks it is the height of rudeness to close your door on someone and not invite them in for a cup of tea Grin...I get worried who she invites into her house now!!

Beer exactly..no different than doing it on line or on a card.

yellow...I was very polite ..in my bleery ..needing coffee state !

I have had estimates before and they have always been okay (had a year of them then when I got a real bill ..it was spot on ?)

I think it it was the time that bothered me the most not my messy kitchen with things still soaking from the night before or my night clothes and lack of shower

We usually get a couple of days warning and so I fill the card in to save the metre reader time.

OP, you need to talk to your mum about security - too many older people get conned/burgled/hurt because they are too polite, they won't question anyone who sounds or looks "official" and are not confident in asking for ID etc

everyone who gives a smile and a cheery "hello love" is not necessarily a good guy

sometimes meter readers are rude - but I think thats probably their reaction to having people be rude to them all day when they are just trying to do a job. It must be very frustrating to have lots of people out and others unwilling to cooperate. That said, I think you are perfectly within your rights to say its too early, or not to let anyone in if you are home alone. As long as you get the numbers for them.

Christ. This is nothing like the dilemma I faced only last week.

My meter is down the cellar. You have to go downstairs there using the door which is in the downstairs loo.

I'd literally just finished wiping my arse after 'going' that morning and the door went. Hurried to wash hands and opened front door to some fecker asking to be allowed in to read the meter.

Knowing the somewhat fragant vicinity he'd have to walk through to get there, I panicked and said, 'Sorry, it's not convenient right now'. Luckily, my baby was screaming blue murder from the kitchen at the time and so added weight to my excuse.

Gas man looked visibly pissed off but what can you do?

He'd have thanked me if he'd known.

I told DH by text a few mins later and he almost died laughing!

YANBU. I do the very same thing. My house is never hardly ever in a fit state for strangers to come into at that time in the morning.

At least he got the numbers!

phanto...I know that is what is worriyng me ....she is still from the age ..we just to leave our back doors open and stuff ...and everybody is better than me ..ie they have a badge therefore must be really important Confused

As far as I'm aware; they always contact you first and don't normally start until after 8.
