to want to advertise for volunteers to join me in litter picking within the city i live in

I have some free time and transport. I would buy litter pickers, bin bags and hi vis jackets and pick litter as i am sick of the litter blowing about.

The parish council arranges this in my area and the surrounding areas. I'd try and arrange it though an already established organisation if you want to do it.

Www.thebigtidyup.org help organise things like this. I've used it though work before but think individuals can use too.

they provide stuff for groups, you can search to see if there is a group in your area or start your own.

Great idea! I really wanted to do this too, though we live rurally - when I walk the dog I find all kinds of litter, plastic bottles, cans, food wrappers and plastic bags stuck in the hedges and trees. So far I have been picking up a bag of rubbish each day but I know there is a piece of woodland nearby filled with litter that could do with an organised clean up.

Not sure who I could get to volunteer though so I would be interested if you have ideas on that. I live in Scotland so have looked at websites for Keep Scotland Beautiful and Clean Up Scotland (campaign related to commonwealth games being in Glasgow next year). They will provide posters and some kit so thinking of getting in touch with them. Is there a similar organisation for where you live?

I know! I drive arund and see all the litter strewn about or in hedges/undergrowth and it really does bring the place down. No need to chuck litter mostly.

I would love this to be a scheme.

I would also like to hire massive body builder/rugby prop types to patrol the city centre and make people pick up litter that they have dropped. I am too afraid of being punched to tell people off...

we have a communities officer at our local council who helps us organise stuff like this. Unfortunately our residents association gets lots of complaints about the litter but very few volunteers to do anything about it :(

I am a Beaver Scout Leader and we do litter picks as part of one of our badges. We borrow the litter grabbers from the local council (Waste & Refuse Dept) who drop them off at my house and collect them later. The provide bin bags and we leave them in agreed spot for collection the next day. We have to provide the council with a Risk Assessment and wear high Viz. The risk assessment is not difficult to do as we need to do it for Beaver outings anyway but I think the council need to know that the volunteers are not going to put themselves or others in danger, especially near traffic or water for example.Can you rope in the local Scout Group to help?
