To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

I think ours is 50". When we first got it it seemed huge and I was a bit Hmm about it - dh chose it. Now though I'm very glad as it's great when playing play station. Grin

juanca · 28/03/2013 15:17

Badtaste - it's really not! You just plug the projector into the side of the laptop and play a film or stream a show on your laptop like you usually would. I'm a technical dullard and even I find it simple.

spiderlight · 28/03/2013 15:26

We have a 32". It's the biggest I would countenance having in the house and it's still too big for my liking. I had a teeny tiny portable for years and it was fine by me! I hate the big gigantic ones. My inlaws have one and it makes me feel sick.

pot39 · 28/03/2013 15:26

We've got a 28 inch in our bedroom and a 32 inch in the sitting room. The latter looked huge when we bought it but now is the smallest main telly of everyone we know.
DS's (13 and 17) moan about it being tiny but then they watch it 3 X as much as their main slave (me) or assistant slave (dh). Interestingly they are quite happy to get into our bed and watch Top Gear on the even tinier telly whilst we watch Call the Midwife on the bigger one.

purples · 28/03/2013 15:30

Wish I had an enormous house, then I might get that enormous TV!
But until hat day, I'm perfectly happy with my 37"
Years ago I just had a small portable black and white tv, which made everyone laugh!!

purples · 28/03/2013 15:31

bit of a typo....for hat, read that.

Wafflenose · 28/03/2013 15:38

We have no TV. My kids aged 7 and 4 have never watched TV Confused but they watch DVDs on a computer screen!

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 15:39

Our sitting room is large and our tv is 20" I think - maybe 22". I think it's too big but at least it does not dominate the room. Our last one was a portable which eventually blew up.

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 15:39

Wafflenose you have my utmost respect! You have done your dcs a great favour.

Wafflenose · 28/03/2013 15:42

When I left home in 1995, I couldn't afford a TV and didn't want one. When I got married 4 years later, DH wanted a huge one we couldn't afford, then I reminded him about the license fee on top! We couldn't agree, and ended up not getting one... 18 years later, I watch the odd documentary on catchup, and the rest of the family is happy to go without. Doesn't stop the girls getting all materialistic though... we just went shopping, and all I heard was, "I want... I want... I wish I could have..." aargh!

glitch · 28/03/2013 15:43

My STBXH bought a hideous 50" thing. I hate it, I have always hated it but would he take it with him when he left? Oh no, he decided to get himself a new smaller one and leave me with the hideous thing. (and so anyone coming to the house thinks it is my choice to have it )
As soon as I have the spare money I am buying a nice small one and this is going on freecycle.

Kaekae · 28/03/2013 15:47

I don't really care what others have. I have never gone in someone's house and thought about the size of their TV! I do however like a decent sized TV as it makes the viewing all the more better. I have a large through lounge though so a small TV would be no good for viewing!

Fluffy1234 · 28/03/2013 15:49

We have a 50 inch T.V and love it. Love watching HD films and nature programmes on it. Im not really into gadgets but love my T.V and really love, love, love sky plus. My MIL always comments on the size of it so it's probably a Daily Mail thing. I'd never have a T.V in the bedroom.

mmmerangue · 28/03/2013 15:49

Ah yes, I was brought up with only Videos (no disney!). We did watch TV at the childminders. Waffle are you sure your kids have never watched TV? At a friends? Even at school? I know we watched Mr Moon etc. in P1/2.

When I was 12 DParents caved and got Sky - full package - all the extras - My brother and I watched TV for 3 years straight.

But not having it when very young probably contributed to my not being too fussy about it these days... DP had one in his room from 5 till living with me and honestly I think he would have withdrawals if it broke/Sky went bust/whatever.

thebody · 28/03/2013 15:50

My sister boasts she has no TV, she hides it in her bedroom and secretly watches it.

Couldn't give a toss really op whether a TV is big or small or none at all.

Personal choice but doesn't make you a more worthy human being if a better parent really does it either way.

Wafflenose · 28/03/2013 15:53

I suppose it's possible, mmmerangue. I'm not bothered, as we've never put a ban on it. They just can't watch it at home!

NinaNannar · 28/03/2013 16:32

lol at "never watched tv" wtf is the difference between that and a DVD

Faxthatpam · 28/03/2013 16:34

My DB had a kitchen extension done and got a giant pull down screen with a projector... it's about 2m wide and makes watching the news really quite upsetting. I suppose it's good it's not down all the time but IMO it really is just not necessary. My DCs love it though [hmmm].

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/03/2013 16:56

have a 50" TV, but our sitting roon is about 35 feel by 20, so it fits in OK.

WhatKindofFool · 28/03/2013 17:00

I have a 52" in my media room. I thought I was being quite restrained actually.

Big TVs are for the goat owning Chavs.
The bigger the tv the smaller the brain.

TerraNotSoFirma · 28/03/2013 17:05

You know what I find naff? Competitive lentil weaving.
Some fine examples on this thread.

At one point in my tiny flat I had a projector, so a screen size of say 84" wide by 60" high, so I think that's about 103" in terms of screen measurement.

Bit of an overkill but it was my home cinema Grin
I went from that to a 14"... and now have 32", which is probably as big as is sensible given the room size, it sits nicely in the corner.

It's personal choice really isn't it and over time your choice may change, either down size or up.

Now if only there was something to watch... I've not yet caught up with Lightfields, so I'll watch that... iPad to stream it to the TV via AppleTV as the TV does not have ITVplayer, though it does have iPlayer. Technology is still a bit of a mishmash when it comes to connected/Smart TVs. Anyone else have a collection of boxes and cables under their TV?
