To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

So in answer to the Op, my opinion would be that all tvs are 'naff' and don't get me started on those hideous satellite things that people put up even on lovely old houses. Gross.

caughtinagiggleloop · 28/03/2013 14:33

We have a modest flat screen on an old TV stand as we only have a small room but DH keeps threatening to buy a huge one that fixes to the wall. I've managed to reason with him for the time being but that's what he says he wants when we can afford to move to a bigger house.

I wouldn't mind but he's always moaning that I watch too much crap TV (I don't by the way - it doesn't get turned on most days until tea time unless there's a decent afternoon film on) and he says he'd be happy if we never watched any TV at all. The reason he wants such a big one is so that he gets a better picture when he's playing his X-box games (boys and their toys, eh?).

We only have the one TV in the house but I do have a laptop and can watch TV on that if I want to watch in bed. The screen on that is on 15 inches and I can see the picture fine so I don't really think we need to get a huge one.

I miss our old crt TV we inherited from my mum and dad when I moved out. It died finally after about 17 years of service a few years back. It was a reasonable size and the buttons did what you wanted them to do as soon as you pressed them instead of waiting for 30 seconds before anything happens. Stupid new fangled technology.

OMG you have out-judged me countrykitten Grin

TBH I can't stand watching TV any more. Too many advert breaks with far more ads than there ever used to be. Even BBC programmes are made for export and designed around breaks, so you get endless recapping and repetition.

EldritchCleavage · 28/03/2013 14:39

I don't have a tv, we prefer whale watching as a family

idiot lantern

I am enjoying this thread.

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 14:40

kitten that's why we usually record most things we want to watch then you can FF through all the tat.

I think ours is 35" - the reviews we looked at when buying it were slightly worrying.

"Perfect size for your toddler's bedroom!!".

Who the feck has a 35" telly in their 3 year old's bedroom????

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 14:41

No - not meaning to be judgey but realise that it sounds that way looking back. I was brought up without tvs (not poverty, parental choice) and have never really got used to sitting there being 'entertained' by it iyswim? I always feel that I should be doing something more interesting I suppose and genuinely don't understand what people see in the whole experience - it's so passive. I try and watch it a few times a week to keep my hand in!

But do I get judgey about those ugly dish things...yup I do. Blush

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 14:42

And btw has anyone noticed how many references there are on here to the DH's wanting/buying huge tvs?

Maybe a huge tv is the new equivalent to the sports car for compensating for teeny winkies Wink

Was it John Lewis in Oxford Street, op? Did you see the 87 inch one? It's fabulous
You'd have to live in a barn.

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 14:43

Yes fellow kitten it seems like progs are made for people with rather short attention spans.

complexnumber · 28/03/2013 14:43

We have a 60inch (ducks and runs). It's hanging on a big wall in a big room so it looks fine. It's our only telly.

Crickey! That's huge!

I have no idea on the size of our telly, but I am guessing it is 37" as it fits well into a fairly small room.

However, my gripe is WHY AREN'T WE USING METRIC?

(Yes, I was shouting, shouting due to despair at the apparent reluctance of the UK to embrace the metric system... apart from pints in pubs... and possibly mph on speed limits... NO! lets get metric.)

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 14:43

Grin at teeny winkies!

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 14:43

35" for a toddler's bedroom? Shock

What website was that review on horse? Am imagining Argos for some reason Smile

Or maybe it was a MNer taking the piss Grin

juanca · 28/03/2013 14:48

Yep, totally naff. I really hate seeing a living space dominated by a huge TV, with all the chairs facing it.

We have a projector that we use for both tv shows and films, run from our laptop and it sits unobtrusively on a shelf.

Maggie111 · 28/03/2013 14:50

Yabu - I love my TV and would have got a bigger one if DH allowed me. Ours is 42".

Considering a lot of what we do in our lounge, is look at it - why should I have a smaller one? So I can see more of the wall???

badtasteflump · 28/03/2013 14:50

Ooh I like that idea juanca. Sounds a bit too technical for me though...

GreenLeafTea · 28/03/2013 14:52

I know someone who has a TV in their bathroom so they can watch TV in the bath. Don't worry it is a special waterproof one for bathrooms.

I think ours is 37 so I am safe!

mmmerangue · 28/03/2013 14:52

badtaste - RE 'Teeny Winkies' - DH is average to above average in that dept. But it may be compensation for not being allowed/ able to afford a stupidly fast car ;)

JustinBsMum · 28/03/2013 14:53

I always feel that I should be doing something more interesting

kitten yes, you should be mnetting on your laptop at the same time like everyone else!

ElectricalBanana · 28/03/2013 14:53

we have a 19" flat screen .....i have just measured it.

My lounge is quite large but its fine....i dont like big TVs.

The TV is not the focal point tbh. I cant see big TVs, i get motion sickness having to move my eyes (and my head)!

VisualiseAHorse · 28/03/2013 14:55

I can't remember what site...it may have been the Curry's one. Do people really have tellies in their toddler's bedrooms?

Another review said "great for your caravan!". It's a nice size, 35" - big enough for what we need, and doesn't dominate the room.

ElectricalBanana · 28/03/2013 14:55

do i win the smallest lounge TV prize?

complexnumber · 28/03/2013 14:56

OK, ignore metric, you foooools!
