AIBU?

To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

I used to be sniffy about big TVs but my eyesight is pretty poor now, so I struggle to see anything on my little tastefully sized TV Sad

Kitten - just what I was going to say! When our last big TV broke and we had a small temp one I couldnt see the channels on the listing and it was a struggle to view. Big TVs are great for old short sighted folk!

We have recently gone from a 24" to a 37". Love my new big tv soooooo much. It is in a v large open plan room though. Dh has been moaning about our wee tv for years and loved visiting family as they all had giant ones.... And now I find out the whole world regards us as naff.

The numbers are guesses btw. Never paid much attention when dh was droning on and on about them.....

I have never in my life been into a telly shop and bought a telly. The first one we had for inherited from DH's nan when she died. When it finally broke we worked out it was 37 years old. Then we had one from ebay that cost £5 and lasted a few years. Now we have another dead man's telly, it was £10. All were about 27in, we've never had a flat screen and they have always been the only telly in the house.

So {bows} can I now be elected least naff person on MN?

We've got a new one before Christmas and it's 40" with no 'frame' so is about the same size as our old 37" - which IMHO was big enough for our narrow living room.

DH was all for a 50" megabastard but thankfully we visited the ILs first and they have such a ridiculously huge telly in a room of similar size; BIL was standing next to it while talking and Dr Who was on - Matt Smith's head was level with his and it was twice the size - it put DH off, thank the Lord...

We have a fucking ridiculous 48 or something inch TV. DPs money, DP watches it, pays for the Sky etc. Could not live with out it. We do have a big living room but the sofa is as close as in anyone elses' to the TV.

I watch CBeebies before nap time and about one other hour of telly a week. DS (age 2) does like to play with the buttons and can probably work more of the functions than me. I would happily have no TV and stream shows online, on my 17" monitor (why didn't you buy a 22" or 24"? bemused brother asked. Because that too would be fucking ridiculous!)

My parents only upgraded from 18" CRT that was 10 years old, last year, to a 28" screen. That would seem reasonable to me.

As an aside about the house age, we went to Canada last year and stayed in a hotel built the same year as our house (1890's). Everyone spent the whole time going on about how 'old' it was and were taking detours to take photos of it Confused . When we told them our house in the uk was built in the same year we were looked at with a mixture of awe, incredulity and absolute pity. Grin

I'm not sure of the size of the TV DP bought with him when he moved in but its big enough to cause looks of disbelief from my family members. At first I got a little dizzy when I watched it but now it seems perfectly normal. Luckily its upstairs in our room so most people just see our normal sized TV in the living room. It is huge but we love cosying up and watching films so its ideal for us. I'm definitely converted but I'd be embarrassed having it somewhere where everyone could see it because I'm quite conscious of the stigma.

The snobbish part of me (sadly, rather a large part) always thinks "They do nothing but watch telly!" when I see a gargantu-TV. Especially in an average sized room.

I was just discussing this with DH the other day. We are still rocking an ancient big bulky tv. We are looking to replace it soon and I said to DH that I don't want anything bigger than 32" for our living room. Fortunately he agreed, much as he would like a large tv, he knows that size will look best in our room.

We have a 60" or something stupid like that....disclaimer the room is huge, we sit about 17 foot away from it.

It doesn't look big as it's on a big wall. My parents on the other hand have a 50 " in a small room, it dominates horribly.

Each to their own though, you should be less judgy, a film on a big screen is great.

itsallyourownfault · 28/03/2013 14:14

Depends how big the house and room are. Some rooms can take over 50 inches without it looking naff. It is worrying seeing tiny council houses where the parents can't afford food for their kids but have a 60 inch tv though. That should be outlawed.

racingheart · 28/03/2013 14:16

We have a 50" screen, given to us by a very generous relative. It makes me cringe (snob) and is too big for the space it's in. I hate it everytime I walk into the room...until it's on. Films look fantastic on it - and we tend to watch more films than tv. The DC often have film nights with friends all lolling round in the dark eating pizza, so it gets used like a mini cinema more often than a tv.

Having more than one tv is ott imo. Why on earth would you want a tv in your bedroom? I don't understand it at all.

Why is it OTT to have more than one tv? There are five people in our home - we don't always want to watch the same things at the same time. And if I'm doing something (quiet) in the sitting room I don't like the tv on at all - particularly if it's anything sports-related Grin

Kitten and foofoo glasses are quite useful for that as well Grin
But I think I like your bigger telly solution better.

Has your OP tried the radio instead rubix? I fall asleep to the radio every night and find it soothing.

badtaste I think that if more then one room is invaded by the idiot lantern then it says that you and your family value it a great deal more that I do. I find the thing sucks life out of a room so we have only one. I just don't get it myself and don't really watch tv - life is too damn short imo.
