To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

I have a 50 inch at the correct viewing distance away (we measured and everything!). I also have a brown leather sofa. To sit on it watching a good film in HD is fantastic. My house is obviously the height of naffness. Don't care.

I wouldn't consider 93 years old, 500 would be more impressive. Anyway you're all being naff, no TV is the only way to go if you want to be really posh (or rather middle middle, I'm sure the toffs with money have enormous big TVs hidden away in their private apartments and the poor toffs will still have CRTs in wooden boxes).

Alternative stealth boast, DD1 came home from school telling me all about the special oven they used at school called a my-crow-wave.

Duh! I wouldn't consider a 93 year old house old.

What about those beds that have the tv popping up out of them. Horrendous things.

Part of me quite like those beds Haggis. At least you can hide the tv away - like part of me would like one of those old tv cabinets with the two doors that you close when you're not watching the tv Blush

But anyway, sorry that my house isn't old enough for some of you

We have a 40something inch and it looks lost in our living room (it's a large all in one living room/dining room/kitchen. Mr Euro keeps asking if we can get a bigger one. I wouldn't mind actually. It's difficult to see subtitles and stuff from the sofa on the current one. It very much depends on the house. And I personally couldn't give a shiny shyte whether anyone considers it naff anyway.

DH has expressed a longing for a 3D telly the size of a small planet. I judged him harshly on that one.

Ours is 50" but the room is def big enough for it.

27" in this house. DH and I were rather sniffily directed to the 'Small TVs Section' at the Curry's Superstore when we went to buy it. No doubt we'll have to get a bigger one when the kids are older so they won't be too mortified to have anyone come round, but for now I'm happy to be out of the giant TV trend.

My BIL sneaked off with the kids one day to buy a 50" which he knew my sister wouldn't like. She calmly relegated it to the basement den. Everyone happy.

You'll only be able to buy 32" tvs from 2018 anyway because of the way digital signals are being limited and the new laws on noise pollution so eventually we'll all have the same size.
A 93 year old house would have been built in 1920. I'm nearly that old. Our house was built in 1124.
I don't have a tv, we prefer whale watching as a family. But horses for courses.

We had a 26" TV which I thought was huge, then DH turned up with a 37". I was a bit miffed at first, but watching sport and movies is very good on a big screen.

I think the "Big TVs are naff" attitude is very noughties though, most people have big plasma screens now, it doesn't mean you do nothing but watch TV. I watch about 3 hours a week, if that.

We have a 55" - dh is a bit of an AV forums geek so the viewing distance/angles/most true black etc were discussed infinitum before purchase then he paid even more money to get some other geek to calibrate it The picture is excellent I have to concede & it really doesn't take up any more room than our old CRT.

I'd prefer to have a living room where the two sofas face each other at either side of the fireplace but have to accept that any room where you sit & watch tv is going to have the sofas orientated towards the tv, thus the tv is the focal point no matter what its size imo. Given that we don't have the luxury of a tv-less drawing room, I'd rather have a tv that you don't have to strain to see!

We have a 32. I find the tv on the wall thing really chavy but dh has seen bad accidents at work with toddlers pulling them over.
Baby is not up and going yet, and dd is big enough not to do anything daft, but I'm dreading the day it goes up!
Dh goes in lots of houses for work and says you can get the measure of people by how big their tv is in their council palace!
Not that all council houses are chavy, most I'm sure are normal homes!

You'd hate our house then - we have a 50" tv in the (large) living room, a 46" tv in our bedroom (I do think that's a bit too big actually - but it was dh's birthday present) and.....a projector with full wall size screen in our cinema room. (For cinema room please read "smallish spare room" - excuse is it came with the house and would cause more hassle to remove it - and we do now enjoy movie nights with popcorn!)

I love our 50 inch, it's great for watching movies, we have loads of space but even for a small room I don't see why anyone would have to block a window since flat screens can be hung on the wall. Would be too much if you had to sit too closely to it though.

I have a 40 inch TV. Took a bit of getting used to after our 32 inch. Now I think it's great. Blu-rays look amazing. It's 3D too which is probably considered tacky too!

I have 2 lounges.

One has a 37inch tv. It's sufficient for the space.

My other lounge is purely for tv/movie usage and I have a 55inch tv on the wall with a lovely 4 seated sofa in front of it. It's a nice cosy room. The picture is amazing.

I love my brown sofa and dont care how naff some pixels on my laptop think they are.

If mn was a true reflection of society then we would all be sitting on laura ashley natual fabric sofas whilst squinting at a 10 inch screen with no heating on whilst knitting our pfb a new school uniform.

I must say i'm not keen on big tellys, or tellys on the wall or in bedrooms or brown sofas . I thought our tv was massive then i went to some of the NCT groups houses and most of them have enormous wall mounted monstrosities in more than one room.

Tbf tho we don't watch the tv much. only for dvd series we buy. (about 2 episodes a week) And if i watch a programme on iplayer or something (usually some kind of history, art or politics programme which no one else wants to watch Blush - because i'm very boring) then i don't even maximise the little screen. So i admit i am a telly freak. i am long sighted (i think that's the term) so i think that affects it.

DH doesn't 'get' telly either and finds adverts really confusing, so he doesn't like it...oh yes...and our house is fucking tiny. Grin

We have a smart 3D 48inch Samsung. The picture quality is bloody amazing. It really is incredible. Last year it was Which's top rated TV. It has a very small aluminium edge.

Our room is not that big and it has low ceilings, the TV looks too big but I don't care. It is just sooooo nice to watch. My DH loves sport and the TV makes him happy.

The rest of the house is tasteful. Honest.
