Really.

Although i have an ordinary kindle and a fancyphone.

But i want a fire.

Tell me fire owners....

Do you read books on it like a ordinary kindle?

Is it good for mumsnetting?

Do you need the HD version?

There's an offer on at the mo and I'm working 2 nights extra while on holiday so feel the need to treat myself.

For reading I prefer the most simple Kindle. It's light and can be used in most situations. I have a tiny weeny light which weighs nothing for use in dark.

diddl · 23/03/2013 14:01

I love my basic Kindle.

I'm after a cheap tablet that I can use to MN, FB, & watch stuff through sites like Movie2k.

fatlazymummy · 23/03/2013 14:19

I have one, I use it instead of a laptop and to play a few games on. It was cheaper than buying a new laptop. It's ok. I have read a couple of books on it,but that wasn't my main priority.
To those people who don't like auto correct, it is possible to turn it off. Hold down the space bar for a few seconds until keyboard settings appear.

fatlazymummy · 23/03/2013 14:22

As far as Mumsnet goes, I do have a problem with it. The main topic page never loads properly, so I can't access some of the boards. That may just be my kindle though.

I have smartphone (iphone 5), a Kindle touch, and now a Kindle Fire HD. To be honest I barely use my Kindle touch now but I would if I was going on a long flight or something to read books because its smaller, lighter and the battery lasts much longer. But I have come to prefer the Fire. The fire is good if you read various craft books, for instance, with pretty pictures, and you can read magazines on it (though I don't tend to) but I do read a newspaper (if you'd call it that, its The Wail) too and the app for that is great.

You can do your games and stuff, its lovely for that, all those game apps you get for android can be used on there.

Its particularly good for Skyping. Really fast and excellent quality with a flippy camera. Ipad good for that too though if you have an ipad 2 or 3.

Its a very nice piece of kit for the money it costs. Really like it. Goes everywhere with me. Wish the battery life was longer but considering its lovely bright backlit screen its really not bad at all.

Have got normal kindle and hd fire. Love them both. Fire is good for browsing, mumsnet and reading inside but would need normal one for reading on holiday because of the screen glare. Go for it - look on eBay for a bargain too

WorriedMummy73 · 23/03/2013 15:17

I have a Kindle Touch - bought it myself as a late Mother's Day present last year. Boy, was I miffed when they announced the Kindle Fire! And I can't leave the sodding things alone in Waterstones. I think if Amazon had any sense they'd offer a trade-in package for older models towards Kindle Fire's, like Game do when newer console's come out.

Also, I had an upgrade on my iPod birthday before last and bugger me if they didn't upgrade it by my next birthday. Is there really any need for companies to keep upgrading everything quite so quickly?

Still want a Fire though...

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/03/2013 16:15

My Kindle died and I was saving up for a paperwhite one because all I really do is read, but then my lovely son bought me a Fire. It is great fun, if I was into films it would be good for watching those, and we play loads of little games - most of them were free too Grin
If all you want to do is read, get a specific ereader, but if you want to play games/watch films/listen to music, get a tablet.
The only thing I hate is the battery life - compared to my ordinary Kindle (charged once a week for a couple of hours) it is crap.
It takes about 5 hours to fully charge and 8 hours to run out and it has taken a bit of getting used to, I have to plan the charging so it doesn't run out on me.
The only other thing I wish is that it had 3G - we have wifi at home, but it's no good out and about and away from the network as I can't download anything.

My dd had the non HD Fire for Christmas and its never out of her hands. She reads on it as well as playing games which are pretty good. It's a great tablet to start out with although I'm sure there are others out there just as good.

I have an ordinary Kindle and Im quite Envy of her Fire.

What irks me about my Kindle though is that when I was deciding to get it the one thing I kept wishing it had was a backlit screen.

'Oooh nooo!!' all the Kindle aficionados told me. 'That's not what Kindle is all about. You must not suggest such a thingShock' and other expressions of horror regarding lights on Kindles being a Great Big No No.

Then within 2 months of getting my Kindle out came the Paperwhite one with a flippin light. I've not stopped harrumphing about it yetHmm

But tbh what I really covet is an iPad (who doesn't Grin) and I'd put a Kindle App on it. But that's another ball game entirely, esp regarding the price.

greenfolder · 23/03/2013 16:31

my dh bought me a fire for my birthday- havent read a book since!

too busy mnetting, playing games and watching lovefilm

WorriedMummy73 · 23/03/2013 16:32

Ohhhhhh, an iPad with a Kindle app! Dribbles at the very thought...

TomArchersSausage · 23/03/2013 16:33

Hey WorriedMummy that's a brilliant idea re trading in old Kindles for Fires! I wonder why on earth Amazon havent come up with that.

Sallystyle · 23/03/2013 16:35

Go get the iPad mini!! It's a lot better than the fire.

I don't think the fire replaces a kindle. The paperwhite is awesome. The fire not so much.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/03/2013 16:37

The Fire seems to me to be what a tablet would have been like 10 years ago, clunky and slow. If you want an ereader get a basic Kindle, but there are better tablets out there.

TomArchersSausage · 23/03/2013 16:38

Oh yes the battery life isn't too good on the Fire. Decreasing the brightness and logging out of WiFi helps though.

WorriedMummy73 · 23/03/2013 16:38

But I want a Kindle Fire! Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/03/2013 16:42

And it weighs a ton.

difficultpickle · 23/03/2013 16:43

I have the ordinary kindle fire. I don't like it. It doesn't have full access to the Android apps and the BBC Iplayer app doesn't allow you to download content (the iphone iplayer app does). I find it clunky and it is fiddly to adjust the sound if you are watching the tv on it. It is cheap but there are better tablets. If you don't want an ipad I would look at Google nexus rather than a kindle fire.

WorriedMummy73 · 23/03/2013 16:43

This is all completely irrelevant though, as I can afford neither a Kindle Fire or an iPad mini...

TomArchersSausage · 23/03/2013 16:44

How much is an ipad mini? And (stupid question alertBlush) does it do exactly the same as an iPad?

Hulababy · 23/03/2013 16:49

Exactly same as the iPad but smaller

Hulababy · 23/03/2013 16:49

They start from £269 for the 16gig

TomArchersSausage · 23/03/2013 16:50

Thanks HulaSmile

Hmm..now I want one. Oh dearSad

Hulababy · 23/03/2013 16:50

Agree re Kindle Fire's battery life. It drains much more quickly than the iPad.

EmmaGellerGreen · 23/03/2013 16:55

I love my Kindle Fire but how do you get skypke? I've never managed it.
