Really.

Although i have an ordinary kindle and a fancyphone.

But i want a fire.

Tell me fire owners....

Do you read books on it like a ordinary kindle?

Is it good for mumsnetting?

Do you need the HD version?

There's an offer on at the mo and I'm working 2 nights extra while on holiday so feel the need to treat myself.

Our Kindle fire is used a lot, and the battery life seems pretty long, much better than my i phone, I think the Kindle fire is a lot better than a tablet for actually reading books.

workhouse · 23/03/2013 10:59

I love mine but as merrylegs said, browsing the internet is far too distracting. I haven't read a book since Christmas, and I was a big reader before that. I'm weak, but I love snuggling up in bed looking at Mumsnet.

MrsKeithRichards · 23/03/2013 11:03

I'm the same merry whilst I've read a lot I find Facebook and mumsnet etc to tempting!

TiaMariaandSpringCleaning · 23/03/2013 11:03

I have a Kindle and a galaxy smart phone - was hugely tempted by the fire until dh got me to spend some time playing with other tablets- bought the galaxy note 10.1 which I absolutely love. I definitely didn't need one, and I'm not the type to normally spend much on gadgets, but it was worth every penny and then some.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 23/03/2013 11:04

Dh has one, he's just got an iPad mini instead.

Slavetothechild · 23/03/2013 11:09

I had a kindle touch , but i decided i wanted a paperwhite for the backlight. Got swayed and bought a fire. It was great and useful but needed a lot more charging which got on my nerves ! As i have an ipad no real need to use the fire to its maxium. I have since bought a paperwhite and its my baby !!! But my son loves the fire so all good. This probably doesnt help you sorry :)

Trills · 23/03/2013 11:12

YABU

Kindle Fires are not like a kindle only better, they are like a tablet only a bit crapper.

If you want a small tablet get a Nexus 7 - it will do everything that a Kindle Fire does and more, and it won't have adverts on the lockscreen, and you won't be tied in to only be able to buy things from Amazon (but you still can buy things from Amazon if you like).

wanderingcloud · 23/03/2013 11:14

I'm on mine now too... my head knew other tablets would probably be better but I just really wanted Fire HD... and I love it. Though MrsKeithRichards is right you can't get candy crush saga. Serious negative. But has probably given me hours of my life back. Oh and temptation to stay up til 3am reading Mumsnet is also a problem!

Tee2072 · 23/03/2013 11:15

I adore my Kindle Fire HD.

::starts never ending debate Trills and I have been having for months::

You are not tied to only buying things on Amazon. That's a lie.

Trills have you actually tried a Fire? Because I have no opinion on the Nexus because I've never tried one.

Tee2072 · 23/03/2013 11:15

Have people looked for what they can't find on Amazon on other Android sites? Because that's where I got Chrome, from another Android site.

TeggieCampbeggBlegg · 23/03/2013 11:15

DH has a nexus 7. It's too much like my Note to need one.

I think I need to have a play with one.

Waterstone's has them, Teggie

Nirvana1999 · 23/03/2013 11:25

My nephew has a Kindle Fire and niece has the Samsung Galaxy Tab. I've had a go on both and would say the Samsung is so much better. It's more responsive and much lighter.

Pandemoniaa · 23/03/2013 11:29

I bought DP a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas. He loves it. But then he didn't have any sort of tablet before, just a standard Kindle. From having a go at it, I'm not convinced that I need one, lovely as it appears to be because I already have an iPhone and iPad as well as the Kindle I got last year.

I'm another one not convinced that it is an improved version of an e Reader let alone anywhere near as good as a tablet as the iPad. So while DP would happily buy me one for my next birthday, I remain unconvinced. I like the more compact Kindle that I already have which gets used for reading books on. If I want to go anywhere near other apps or the internet the iPad does the job perfectly.

edwardsmum11 · 23/03/2013 11:29

I got my samsung galaxy 10.1 instead and wasnt much more as was in sale.

Hulababy · 23/03/2013 11:45

We won one just before Christmas. Just the standard one, not HD.

I don't think it is a replacement for an ordinary Kindle. It is a normal tablet screen so if it is sunny (that yellow thing we used to see in the sky - may have vague memories!) you can't see it - too much glare. It's also heavier so not as easy to hold to read compared to a normal Kindle. I would have thought the main benefit of a Kindle is to be able to read outside in the summer - on the Kindle Fire this isn't really possible ime.

It is a tablet. So it is to compare against other tablets. We also have an iPad and DD has an iPad mini. I prefer the iPads over the Kindle Fire personally, having used both. There are more apps and they are more intuitive imo. Anyone can pick up an iPad and use it; the Kindle less so initially. Even simple things like turning the sound up and down is a bit more fiddly initially! I also fine the Kindle Fire quite heavy, esp compared to the later iPads (outs is a first gen one so not much in it) and definitely compared to DD's iPad mini.

However, the Kindle Fire is far cheaper and it is fine. I think the productivity apps are good, and possibly easier to use than on the iPad, you can get ones which work well with Microsoft Office, so it using for work purposes may be good.

Can you go and try one out in a store first?

TBH I would never go and buy one myself personally. Ours sits unused a lot of the time. We all prefer to pick up the iPad or phones (I have an iPhone, DH has a Samsung Galaxy SII) over the Kindle Fire.

Doha · 23/03/2013 11:46

I love mine and it goes everywhere with me--yes everywhere!!!. DH is now the proud owner of an ordinary kindle. I have iphone ipad and ipod but my kindle fire wins hands down

MrsKeithRichards · 23/03/2013 11:48

Tee I didn't realise you could do that! How do I do that?

I just use the app bit on the kindle.

Machli · 23/03/2013 11:51

My mums got one and I have to say its very good. I'd be hard pushed to choose between it and an IPad. On balance I prefer the IPad but that's because I am used to it.

TeggieCampbeggBlegg · 23/03/2013 11:51

Hmmm. Hula - that has confirmed my worries a bit.

What I like about my kindle...

It is light. I can hold it in one hand.
It doesn't have the shiney glary screen

Maybe i don't need a Fire.

I think i do though.

Tee2072 · 23/03/2013 11:52

Go here from your Kindle Fire and you can download apps.

You do need to go to apps in settings and allow 3rd party apps.

I think the iPad is too heavy. If I was to get one (and I would love it) I'd get the mini. But I have bad arthritis in my hands and fibro arms so I need something small and light.

Hulababy · 23/03/2013 11:56

If you want to read in the sun then you don't want to use any tablet tbh; you need a normal kindle or e-reader imo. The Kindle Fire IMO is not a proper e-reader; it is a tablet.

I have used a few tablets recently as DD and her friends all seemed to got one or the other for CHristmas. I still prefer the iPad, esp the mini, but the Samsung was good too - pretty easy to use.

As I said - I got my Kindle Fire for free. I am glad I did. I it is cheaper than the iPad and ime/imo there is a reason for that. IMO and IME it is not as good. Personal choice though and I know there are others who don't like Apple.

Tee2072 · 23/03/2013 12:00

Oh I adore Apple. I just hate their overpricing! Grin

Machli · 23/03/2013 12:06

The IPad kindle app is a bit of a pain too. You used to be able to buy books direct from amazon via the app then they changed it so you couldn't and that made me quite Angry. Pure greed. It's also quite heavy for reading in bed as well.
