To be spending my time playing Tombraider when there's more boring stuff to be done

Or alternately AIBU to expect a mumsnet section called "fun and games" to have a subsection on gaming or is gaming just for blokes whilst women do "arts and crafts"?
I love the current Lara game, she's looking more like a woman and less like a drag queen or 16 year old's idea of a woman. You also don't have to kill people all the time, although I have shot a few deer and wolves. Steam is a nightmare for a computer game novice to negotiate but how many other mum's play video games when they can prise them away from the kids or do some women see video games as evil and time wasting when there's vacuuming to be done?

YABU, you should be playing World of Warcraft (WoW) like me. I'm not a mum and to hell with vacuuming, I leave that to my cleaner.

I'm retired and disabled and playing WoW has been great. It's great chatting to my online friends although my RL friends are convinced they must be axe murderers Grin.

That sounds too "warry" for me. I like exploring tombs and islands and am more inclined to run away than stand and fight.

I second playing WoW and I'm more inclined to run away too. I think you'll be surprised at how un-warry it is. My main character is a cow-person who goes round picking flowers all day. :)

I also love Tomb Raider but sometimes find it a bit scary. Came close to heart failure when the T-rex chased me in the first (?) one.

SilverOldie · 19/03/2013 21:21

It's not all hack and slash, lots of quests to do and they have recently introduced pet battles where 3 of your pets can fight master tamers' and other players' pets and you can also tame wild pets. A bit like Pokemon so I'm told.

But running away is a no no Smile.

StuffezLaBouche · 19/03/2013 21:27

I like the tomb raider games, but jump when the tigers and general baddies leap out... In all honesty, I prefer games like Myst, where there's no combat and loads of problem solving. (Please say there are some fellow myst saddos on MN?!)

bigbadbarry · 19/03/2013 21:27

I used to love tombraider when we had a PS1 and no children. Had no idea it was still going, do I have to buy a new playstation or what?

2rebecca · 19/03/2013 22:58

I love myst, although have never got very far on it. I tend to get stuck and don't like looking at the cheats. I haven't played it for a while but got stuck on trying to work out codes on stones and travel machines.
We have TR the last revelation on PS1 but I couldn't play it alone in the house at night because the wolves and mummies scared me too much, then I got stuck being unable to leap across things and crawl under a door fast enough.
A new version came out this month. I know it's on xbox 360 and PS3 but I have it on the PC but they have a complicated thing where you don't just but the disc in your computer but have to download it from a web platform called steam. If you don't do much gaming then the chances are that like me your computer graphics card or driver for the card won't be quite right so you'll get a black screen and spend ages trying to make it work. It's great now it does work though.

I love the new TR game! Just completed it, but going back to find all the stuff.

So YANBU

bluehaze · 19/03/2013 23:12

If you love Lara then try Nathan Drake Uncharted. He is male version of Lara - lots of adventures and treasures to find but a lot more shooting. I play with my son and play Lara with my daughter - we are very slow but it's fun and a great way to spend time together as long as you share the controller.

Bunnygotwhacked · 19/03/2013 23:46

Yes come and join the mumsnet WoW guild we have loads of members all mumsnetters with a couple of dp's thrown in

HerrenaHarridan · 20/03/2013 00:02

I think yabu because I detest computer games but whatever if it makes you happy and isn't hurting any one else.

But what I do need to say is, the new 'real' woman Lara croft is designed by terry pratchetts daughter rhianna!

She did an interview on woman's hour that is very interesting.

JackieTheFart · 20/03/2013 00:04

Haven't got it yet but payday is Friday...

StuntGirl · 20/03/2013 00:51

YANBU, the new Tomb Raider is bloody marvelous. I honestly didn't think they could bring it back to its former glory but I stand corrected.

prettypleasewithsugarontop · 20/03/2013 06:19

Oooh i have this to play! I loved the PS1 and Final Fantasy 7 Grin

JCDenton · 20/03/2013 08:38

Actually good is it? Will put it on the the birthday list (and my mum's). Still remember us playing the PS1 games when the puzzles were really obscure and we had no Internet you could be stuck for days! I'm pretty good at resisting the temptation to Google these days though.

MrsReiver · 20/03/2013 08:46

YANBU! I was watching DH play Tomb Raider while I nursed DS2 and I was thinking how good it looks. I might have a go when (if?) DS sleeps today even though I'm meant to be finishing Devil May Cry first.

StuntGirl · 20/03/2013 10:39

It's much more action based and a lot less puzzles than the original Tomb Raiders, but I feel they've done well with what they've got. The optional tombs dotted about the place are where the puzzles are mostly at, although I do find them a tad boring and redundant, as you can leave the tomb at any time so there's not the challenge of earlier puzzles where you HAD to solve it to move through the game.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/03/2013 10:50

Oooohhhhhhh. I'm in the middle of playing the new Tombraider atm. I'm gutted because I'm home babysitting the builders and can't do anything useful (small flat, kitchen being gutted - can't do washing or anything) but I have an absolutely stinking cold and can't concentrate on shooting people through the head with arrows... Sad

SofaKing · 20/03/2013 12:32

I love the new tomb raider game. I have it on steam and didn't have any problems. But I have a laptop and would be better with a desktop as a separate mouse would make it easier.
Am stuck just now so will ask dh if I can borrow his desktop and fight the radio tower baddie on that - you have to shoot him in the back of the head and I cannot do it at all!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/03/2013 12:48

I have crap control with the PS3. I think I'd fail miserably with mouse and keyboard controls! I'm fine with sneaky stealth stuff but as soon as there's waves of bad guys I panic and die I have problems aiming. I'm more into the exploring and problem solving aspects than the fighting parts.

2rebecca · 20/03/2013 14:57

Sofa king, can't you just attach a mouse to your laptop? I hate integral mice so always do this with ours if doing anything complex.
I hate the scary bits and panic as well.

Kasterborous · 20/03/2013 15:07

YANBU to enjoy games. Mario Kart is my personal favourite. I'm useless at things like Tomb Raider I would keep getting lost.

StuntGirl · 20/03/2013 15:12

That's part of the fun kaster Wink
