To be annoyed at the meat consumed this week.

I did the shopping, protein to last two weeks. I was away for four days. Im cooking a roast today.

DH and DSS x 2 have gotten through

Two large packs of bacon
2kg chicken breast
600g mince
1 chorizo sausage
And today a roast chicken

DSS wont eat meals without meat protein, and wont fill up on veg and carbs. Had enough of the money spent out on food shopping.

I suggested cheap meal ideas, but they chomped through it for breakfast, packed lunch and dinner, plus pizzas and various crap potato products.

Plus we had fish last night!

How old are the dc?
U think Yabu, chicken and chorizo type meal one night, maybe leftovers for lunch, big shepherds pie/spag bol one night. I get through loads of meat too, also tend to do meat free Monday and I do another day during the week too.
If you didn't want it eaten, did you specifically let them know it was for a meal that you had planned?

bedmonster · 17/03/2013 12:16

Not u think, I think!

TallDwarf · 17/03/2013 12:23

I don't think Yabu, that is quite a lot of meat they've eaten.

You need to stop pandering to them. Buy the meat you need for meals and serve up alongside veg and carbs. If they eat it all in a couple of days then they've got a long week of veg and carbs coming up.

IceBergJam · 17/03/2013 12:24

16 and 18.

Thats about 16 chicken breasts, cooked for dinners and lunch (when there was normal lunch alternatives) , 20 rashes of bacon, which was eaten for breakfasts (when there was cereal, toast, crossiants). 600g mince is a lot for one meal.

I separated the meat out and told them what was for next week.

Ive cut back on beef mince, I now use half mince and half quorn mince. Cheaper and doesn't taste any different.
Go for cheaper cuts, like chicken legs or thighs or stewing steak they're brilliant for casseroles.

IceBergJam · 17/03/2013 12:29

They wont eat mash, jackets, roast, boiled potatoes. Just a few mouthfalls of rice. Im getting fed up of pasta.

No egges, beans, pulses, cous cous.

Im always moaning about this. Dont know how to move forwards.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 17/03/2013 12:30

Oh and if it was supposed to last 2 weeks don't buy anymore!

NeverBeenToMe · 17/03/2013 12:30

Write the meal plan out so they know when the food is meant to be eaten?

IceBergJam · 17/03/2013 12:30

They wont eat casseroles, shephards pies etc. Or will only pick out the meat.

SheepNoisesOff · 17/03/2013 12:31

Just to be clear: did they eat all that in four days? Shock

Bossybritches22 · 17/03/2013 12:34

They'll eat it if they're hungry enough.

Do big filling meals following a meal plan. No arguements no alternatives. If they want anything different they can buy & cook their own!

fuzzpig · 17/03/2013 12:34

Give them boring pasta every day to make up the cost? (But eat something nice yourself if possible)

I'd be utterly livid with DH.

Theas18 · 17/03/2013 12:35

If it was meant to last 2 weeks doing buy any more.

I'm afraid I'd be heartily sick of the"they won't eat" game.is this a food version of Disney dad?

Next step hand food budget and shopping/cooking to bl**dy dh and the over indulged step kids.

Apart from anything else it isn't a very healthy diet anyway there must be almost no fruit/veg there.

MummyNoName · 17/03/2013 12:38

Get dh to cook for the week

Or ask him to replace the meat.

IceBergJam · 17/03/2013 12:42

Can people suggest big filling meals excluding:-

Potatoes unless from the freezer (DH, me and DD 15m have normal)

Soups / stews / pies

Lasagne type meals (DSS 16 wont eat sloppy food so things like pasta and curry is fried off)

Quick and easy. We both work full time. DSS works.

We only have DSS week on / off so this week is OK (although I have to replan since the chicken is all gone)

OP posts:
bedmonster · 17/03/2013 12:44

Well it is a lot of meat yes, but the 2 dc must by now have appetites of grown men, so would it be fair to say 3 adults?
We use a 600g pack of mince to feed myself, Dp, 2dds age 7&8 and ds, who is 16m. Also does a meal for the freezer for him. It's not that huge an amount. We could eat less of course, but it comes like that so we eat it all. The bacon sandwiches doesn't sound like loads over 4 days. I just spent £6 on 2 chicken breasts, that must have cost you tonnes for 16!!
But they are very fussy. I too would be handing over a budget, and some recipes and letting them crack on with it.

bedmonster · 17/03/2013 12:46

And whoever wont eat sloppy food should be shown the bread and the toaster. Why on earth let it dictate entire family meals for a whole week?

IceBergJam · 17/03/2013 12:46

DSs 16 eats raw carrort, iceberg lettuce, apples, grapes.

DSS 18 wont eat fruit but can manage peppers, carrots and onions

I have to blend tinned toms, grate veg :-/

DH rubbish at food shopping. I tried. I tried the eat what we eat but DSS 18 works hard, and DSS 16 is so pale I feel bad because they would go without or have a cheese sarnie.

AmberSocks · 17/03/2013 12:49

it would depend,is money tight?if so i would be annoyed, but personally no,its only food, and teenage boys and men tend to eat lots!

Fairylea · 17/03/2013 12:49

Id give dh the money for food and let him see how far it gets him. I think until people realise how expensive meat is they have no clue whatsoever.

piprabbit · 17/03/2013 12:49

I'd be tempted to try giving them a small food budget as an experiment and tell them to provide for themselves for a week.
What are they planning to eat when/if they leave home for uni?

freddiemisagreatshag · 17/03/2013 12:49

600g of meat is only a pound and a bit - it's not even a pound and a half (450/500g is a pound)

I'd have thought three adult males could easily eat that in one meal.

Same with the chicken breasts. It's only 4lbs and I'd probably cook 2lbs of meat for 3 adult males plus me.

Teenaged/early 20's boys eat all the time. One chorizo would be a snack for mine.

Theas18 · 17/03/2013 12:51

AND the 16 yr old "won't" eat soups/stews/casseroles? This is beyond a joke.

You are saying they've eaten the meat and can now swan off for a week at mothers whilst you have no meat left to eat? Sorry but the consequences week is deferred till next time they are here.

Does the working dss contribute to the astronomical food bill he expects you to cover?

What does your dh say? He's allowed this to happen and no don't partaken of it too..
