I got into the habit of checking it every day when we were looking for our girl. We've had her a week now but I can't stop myself from looking at it every day even though we definitely don't want another cat (not now anyway). I think I just like it when they get marked as rehomed. There are a couple of cats who are still there from when I started looking over a month ago and it makes me sad that they still haven't found someone to love them.

Yes definitely cozie! We have children under 11 and cats and me and dh jokingly said 'shall we get rid of the kids and the cats and just take Bruce home?'

I'm sure someone who has a lot of time for Bruce will come along eventually (until then, I shall check the website everyday!).

I check the collie rescue pretty regular where we had our rescue from and I couldn't even possibly have another dog! so yanbu at all

£75 doesn't even begin to cover the cost of most of the animals stays. Mine had a lot of dental work and all of the cats are given a full MOT.

I got my old cat from wood green asleb. I think they threw a party when we took him (he was falling to bits, rather). We went in looking for a kitten and they told us all about the home visits, checks etc. we then saw this battered old boy, said maybe we will have him instead as he looks so sad, and they literally shoved him in a cat carrier, gave us a few forms, hussled us out the door (and I think possibly doubled locked it behind us) before we could change our minds!!
He was a nightmare and a delight in equal measures. I will always get a rescue animal in future. Seems wrong to get a cute posh pet when so many are sad and lonely in their cages/kennels.
I don't think the cost is that much really, I doubt they cover the cost of keeping it there and all the checks, treatments etc. I would imagine its also there to make sure you are serious also. If they didn't charge you might be more likely to get one on a whim without thinking things through possibly.

Every moggy I've owned has turned up in my garden as a stray. I think word got out that this is the address to come to for food and love!

Off to the supermarket now and this thread has reminded me to buy some extra cat food for the local cats home.

I lost my old lady to cancer last month. I keep looking at the 'oldies' dog site. I really want some company - but not ready for cat company yet. No kitty can replace Sonky cat.

No one wants the oldies, but I do. Comfy bed - check. Slow short walk (not in rain!) - check. Underfloor heating - check. Tasty nibbley bits - check. I'll even take the one that has bad breath and gas. But DH needs some persuading... .

It's a bit sad, I'm 'broody' for a flatulent old timer!

It's definitely worth getting a cat from a rescue. If you get a kitten then you don't really know what sort of cat they'll turn into and if they'll suit your lifestyle. Rescue cats get assessed for temperament so you have a good idea in advance about whether they would be alright left alone for the day, good with kids etc.

It also seems silly to encourage breeders to bring more cats into the world when cat shelters are full of cats looking for someone to love them.

asleb my mum's dog is the spit of Bruce - I notice he's a pointer X and mum's is a German Wire Hair Pointer - as big as a donkey almost When they go out with their dog, it take hours as loads of people stop to fuss him!

Me neither - difficult to photograph well though, so maybe their pics don't do them justice?

Mine was a stray, lived rough for a month in the garden until I caved, already had a cat & wasn't planning another. Went to put stuff in bin one night & she was sheltering in some boxes out for recycling Boxes were due for collection next morning & all I could think of was what if she'd ended up in the crusher.
Brought her in and had her for 13 yrs

Current HorsemadCat arrived in similar fashion, lived rough in garden for a month until I caved again!!
Our black cat was on her last legs so felt guilty getting another but I'm glad we did 'cause it really helped having HorsemadCat2 when she was pts

Oh did you monty? You did the same as us with our cats - we're always suckers for the hard to home animals . We got our 2 cats when they were kittens from the rspca and they were 6 months old but practically feral. We felt so sorry for them as they were struggling to home them because they wasn't 'cuddly' cats. 10 years on we still have them. They do let us stroke them now if we are lucky, but it has to be outside, and you have to wait and let them come to you!

Your mum's dog sounds amazing horsemad. I love the look of them, they do look like big soppy donkeys

He is crackers asleb. He did £500 worth of damage to a brand new car when he was left in it for 5 - yes FIVE minutes [shocked]

Shredded the driver's seat and seatbelt - that was when they found out he has separation anxiety

My little black cat Coco was only with us for 3 months. She had a heart murmur. She went missing and was found dead. Not a mark on her, as if she had fallen asleep. One year old, and she had had kittens.

One if mine disappeared years ago, we never found her. My elderly neighbour searched for her for a couple of weeks 'cause he loved her too.

It was the not knowing that was horrible Horse. Although awful, I felt better when she had been found.

But because of that I get all stressy when Sparkling cat doesn't stick to her routine and scare me into thinking she's gone AWOL.

My childhood cat pulled a disappearing act too. He broke his hip so we had to keep him in while it healed. He really wasn't impressed with this since he was semi feral and just never came back once we let him out again.

Oh no, what have you done...? We lost one of our cats at Christmas to cancer and I'm just starting to think about a companion for remaining cat. So now of course I've been looking at the Wood Green cats, and I want Sooty. And Pudding. And Merlin. And Buffy. And Marble and Muffin. And Chunks. And...and...and...

Ha ha - I do this too. Have had all my cats from Wood Green over the past 16 years and now live very close to one of their branches so it's not just looking on their site - which I often do - but also "popping in" on a regular basis. In fact, it's my black cat here: www.woodgreen.org.uk/pet_advice/632_multi-cat_households when she was a kitten (obviously).

It's really sad to see the same cats "stuck" at the home though for months on end. Especially as it's so often the black ones. As for not photographing well, there's a picture of what that kitten looks like now on my profile. I wish more people would consider them.
