to think Darwinian selection will make the MN of the future a very different place?

AIBU to think that evolutionary pressures will eventually take their toll on the people who:
a) would rather follow their instinct as mothers over the current NICE guidelines,
b) would rather believe what daily mail hacks have to say than what the NHS, WHO etc. recommend
c) are anti-vaccinations
d) think vitamin supplements can cure aids and homeopathy can cure anything at all
e) think cosmetic surgery is necessary for self-esteem
f) think that just because they survived forward facing car seats, fag smoking parents and sleeping on their stomachs etc. their children will?

And to deduce, therefore, that the MN of 1000 years hence will be a much quieter more rational place altogether?

AI further being U to pursue an active role in promoting all of the above memes as vigorously as possible in order to bring forward in time the dawn of the projected rationalist era?

I reckon people will still be arguing the toss over people without children docking their hover-car in a P&C space. Grin

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:09

so true!

sadly parking like a tit hardly ever leads to removal from the gene pool....

No but yabu for making my head hurt by somehow prompting me to think about what socks will be made of in 1000 years

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:20

socks?

well this got weird fast....

It's OK for posters to have an opinion which runs against the grain, it'd be Netmums ridiculous else, everyone agreeing with each other

But, and I apologise if you meant it as a lighthearted thread, I'm not sure about pouring scorn on those who do say they don't go along with the crowd, they should be free to say whatever they like without other posters feeling they have the right to shout them down.

If they're a twat it's OK to say so, but the anger and tactics used to discredit the few posters who speak up for an alternative way of thinking, can be pretty alarming sometimes.

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:30

agent oh I have no problem with people expressing these opinions any more...not now I have realised it is all about the long game....

And socks will be made from a very soft, durable, waterproof (and therefore smell free), self cleaning material.

Shiny silver to go with the rest of the onsies which'll be in vogue.

AgentZigzag · 15/03/2013 23:33

Are there posters who are in it for a long game ICB?

That would be incredibly sad and a bit sinister wouldn't it? (unless they're trolls of course).

But wasn't the apocalypse due?

Or we might.have evolved to be transendational beings.

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:41

it will get worse initially but then they will all get wiped out by measles.....

or possibly a disease contracted from a dirty sock....

When I was at school many many moons ago (yes I am an old gimmer) we were asked to write about what life would be like in the year 2000. We all wrote about hovercars, silver suits and robots doing our work for us.

Life rarely works out as we expect so on those grounds YABU. We may end up in an alternate universe where homeopathy has cured all ills

The thing is -
a - medical professionals get it wrong sometimes and 'instinct' proves right
b - the media can be a good counter balance to offset the accepted way of thinking
c - weighing up the evidence for something important to you is good practice
d - with new drugs coming out all the time containing plant extracts etc, people can be forgiven for trying everything
e - you can't underestimate the value of self-esteem, look what happens to someone without any
f - they're just saying there are worse things to worry about Grin

AgentZigzag · 15/03/2013 23:50

But then there is something about a poster who argues the toss again and again about the same thing.

I would think they were just trying to work something out in their head and getting heated about it explores it in a way they couldn't do in RL.

IneedAsockamnesty · 15/03/2013 23:51

I didnt mean to be weird you just got me thinking about the future and naturally that led me to socks.

But anyways the point in hand, its good if people have different ideas ect one example I can think of is BLW

About 18 ish years ago I was in a child protection meeting with a client,a subject of much discussion was her food choices for her child first she was trashed for trying to ebf till 6 months and then it was for how she weaned the baby apparently she 'lacked insight' into how dangerous her method was,she ended up being forced to go to a mother and baby supervision unit because the other option was foster care. The method she used is called BLW these days.

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:51

hmmm...it bothers me how much time I spend thinking about how very disappointed Newton would be if he could see how little progress we have made...

It's been well over 300 years and yet the average person on the street can't integrate and probably doesn't realise that plants (just like horses) contain DNA.

OP posts:
ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:54

hahaha medical professionals are sometimes wrong and instinct is sometimes right...but who the hell would sign up for those odds? I mean it is what 10,000 to 1 against that you are right when all the medical evidence points the other way?

Erm hang on... I mean...yes yes instinct is very valuable! Make sure your children/grand children realise that their instincts are more important than the data and that million to one chances turn up 9 times out of 10!

AgentZigzag · 15/03/2013 23:57

Lets put someone from 300 years in front of an up-to-date phone, see how evolved they are ICB Grin

Were there not other things flagging up the mum Pixie? It just seems a bit extreme to say how she fed them was dangerous.

ICBINEG · 15/03/2013 23:57

sock yes but there was no evidence in that case. People were saying it was dangerous but with no evidence.

I am talking about going against evidence being a bad idea, not going against common sense which turns out to be utter bollocks most of the time.

It's the same with the tummy sleeping. People think that the evidence changed...but it didn't. Front sleeping was 'common sense'. Once evidence was collected it all pointed to back sleeping being safer. The evidence has always been the same.....

AgentZigzag · 16/03/2013 00:00

But if I was up against the might of the medical profession ICB, and all the trappings of status and authority they hold, but I knew something wasn't quite right with my child, I would fight like a Troll on a parking thread to get my voice heard.

People can usually weigh up the general knowledge they have about something and judge whether what they're hearing adds up or not.

That's all instinct is, weighing shit up.

ICBINEG · 16/03/2013 00:04

hmmm HCPs do have a habit of treating each individual as if they were average...which is stupid because no one actually is.

but unless you have MORE information than the HCP then it is dodgy to think you know better.....

OP posts:
ICBINEG · 16/03/2013 00:05

lol at trappings of status though...you know you can buy lab coats of your own Grin

She was a young care leaver and initially the ONLY thing raised was the ebf.

I still come into contact with her these days but she's no longer a client she's a professional and her dc is delightful and ended up being kept with her but after shit loads of hassle because she followed her instincts.

I'm sure if chat sites existed then she would have been flamed and subject to hysteria because it was not the done thing.
